1 Corinthians 1:1–9 ESV
Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge— even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Corinth

Geographical Context

Corinth was a significant ancient city located in Greece, strategically situated on the narrow stretch of land,
Its location made it a commercial hub, as it facilitated trade between the eastern and western Mediterranean.

Culture

Corinth was known for its diverse population, consisting of Greeks, Romans, Jews, and various other ethnic groups due to its strategic location for trade.
This diversity led to a cosmopolitan culture but also brought challenges regarding social cohesion and religious practices.

Religious Background

The city was home to various cults and religious practices, including the worship of Greek gods like Aphrodite and Poseidon.
Immorality and idolatry were prevalent in Corinthian society, influencing the behavior and values of its inhabitants.

Modern day Las Vegas

Paul's Establishment of the Church

Paul visited Corinth during his second missionary journey, around 50-52 AD, and spent approximately 18 months there.
Paul successfully planted a church in Corinth, which became one of the significant centers of early Christianity.

1 Corinthians 1:1–3 ESV

Church

The church is not a building!
Ecclesia = literally means an assembly of people (congregation)
Gathering is implied
Colossians 1:15–18 ESV
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
1 Corinthians 12:12–26 ESV
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.
(1) A mature Christian is gospel centered.
(2) A mature Christian is sound in doctrine.
(3) A mature Christian is submissive.
(4) A mature Christian is sacrificial.
(5) A mature Christian is steadfast in godliness.
(6) A mature Christian is a leader of others.
(7) A mature Christian understands (s)he is sent.
This echos ALL of these aspects...
(1) A mature Christian is gospel centered.
There is a Kingdom
That Kingdom has a King (Jesus)
That King came on Mission (redemption)
That Mission birthed a People (church)
The People have a Message (gospel)
(2) A mature Christian is sound in doctrine.
Understanding ecclesiology
Understanding the doctrine of the church
(3) A mature Christian is submissive.
Assembled people are not chaotic
They submit to God
They submit to godly leadership
They submit to one another out of reverence for Christ
You can’t say “I love God, I love the Bible, I am spiritual, I just don’t really like the church.”
(4) A mature Christian is sacrificial.
Once you understand Christ is the head, we are the body, and different members of it, you have to be sacrificial and preferential to other members
(5) A mature Christian is steadfast in godliness.
Assembly at some point in your walk will be hard.
DON’T FORSAKE THE ASSEMBLY
Hebrews 10:24–25 ESV
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
(6) A mature Christian is a leader of others.
Taking on more responsibility in the church
Kids, serving on a team, giving generously, Elder/Deacon
(7) A mature Christian understands (s)he is sent.
The gathered church is scattered.
This is the great commission

Saints

“Holy” or more specifically “Holy ones”
cross reference
Romans 1:7 ESV
To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Galatians 5:24–25 ESV
And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
Ephesians 4:17–21 ESV
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. But that is not the way you learned Christ!— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,
Ephesians 4:22–24 ESV
to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
1 Corinthians 1:4–9 ESV
I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge— even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
