 TEXT:  2 Timothy 3:14-17

TOPIC:  Continuing in the Holy Scriptures

Pastor Bobby Earls, FBC, Center Point, Alabama

November 26, 2006

14But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:14-17

Bible Facts:  The Bible contains 3,886,489 letters; 773,692 words; 31,173 verses; 1,189 chapters; and 66 books.  The middle verse is the 8th verse of the 118th Psalm.  The longest verse is Esther 8:9.  The shortest verse is John 11:35.

I.                   CONTINUE IN THE SCRIPTURES FOR SALVATION, 14-15

14But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

A.    The Bible, a Reliable Source, v. 14

B.     The Bible, a Revealing Source, v. 15

II.                CONTINUE IN THE SCRIPTURES FOR SANCTIFICATION, 16-17

16All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

A.    Inclusive, “All Scripture”

Over 40 different men spoke, over a period of 1500 years, as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

2 Peter 1:20-21, “No prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”

B.     Inspired, “is given by inspiration of God,”

Every word of the Bible is inspired or “God-breathed.”

The Bible claims to be the word of God because is says no less than 3,808 times in the Old Testament, “And God said….” Or “And the word of the Lord came to…”

C.     Instructive, “and profitable for….”
