Ruth 3. A small act of obedient faith brings a whole new day.

In the previous chapter, the initiative comes from Ruth (2:2). Now it is Naomi who takes the initiative and speaks to Ruth and tells her what to do.

Ruth 1:19-22. Het laatste getuigenis is “Haar bitterheid” God krijgt de schuld.

Naomi has changed so much and she no longer thinks about herself, but about Ruth.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer always included Jesus: “The man for others” (Phil. 2:3,4).

Zij waren zelf op reis gegaan. Zij was al tien jaar lang uit het land geweest. De vrouwen van Bethlehem kregen een schok toen zij haar zagen (19). Is dit Naomi? riepen de vrouwen uit. Zij was niet de Naomi, die ze van vroeger kenden. De problemen hadden haar niet beter maar wel bitter gemaakt. Zij getuigt ervan en zegt: noem mij maar: Mara (Bitter). Wij hebben ook niet altijd controle over onze omstandigheden, maar wij hebben wel controle over onze reacties en wij worden op geroepen om in alle omstandigheden toch te blijven danken!

Het grootste probleem van ons ongeluk , is het gevolg van egoïstisch denken.

When the widows arrived in Bethlehem, Ruth saw it as her job to take care of Naomi. She did not think like Orpah of a man of children. Naomi also cares and comes up with a plan to prepare for a wedding.

Naomi was nog een vrouw met lege handen, een leeg huis en een leeg hart.

Footnote: Keep in mind the booklet Ruth is more than a marriage between a widow and a rejected foreigner who marries a wealthy Jew. It is a shadow image of the Lord Jesus with all who trust Him and believe in Him. The steps Ruth takes are the steps we must take to come to a deeper relationship with Jesus.( heavenly groom).

Like Ruth, we are not to be content with the remnant or receiving gifts. We must want Him for ourselves. It is not the gifts we seek, but the Giver! Nor is it enough for us to know the Lord's servants to learn lessons from God's Word from them. Everyone must have a personal relation with the Lord Jesus! Then He Himself will also be able to speak to our hearts. One of the wonderful fruits of the rich life from the New Covenant is just that: Heb.8:11.

Naomi noemt God: De Almachtige (El Shaddai).

Surely they will not teach every man his neighbor and every man his brother, and say, Know the Lord God. For they shall all know me, from least to greatest of them.

Onze problemen kunnen machtig zijn, maar God is Almachtig. Was Naomi echt zo slecht af? Zij had haar leven en Bethlehem nog om naar terug te gaan. Het Christen leven is een serie van nieuwe starten. Zij had in Bethlehem nieuwe mogelijkheden. Ze was omringd door haar volk.

En dan te bedenken dat zij Ruth aan haar zijde had, die getuigd had van haar volkomen overgave aan Naomi. Bovenal had zij de Almachtige God van Israël.

Footnote: Ruth lives in dependence on Naomi and her next steps we must follow as well. It was exactly what Naomi did!

Zij was weer teruggekeerd onder de vleugels van die levende God van Israël.

3:1. For her part, she has the peace and the best in mind for her daughter-in-law. Where else could that be found but at the feet of Boaz, who is an image of a Greater than he. How many people have already gone to the Lord Jesus weary and burdened, and have found there rest for their souls with Him (Matt.11:28).

3:1-5. Naomi knows the customs and she knew that Boaz would sleep by the threshing floor.

De naam van de Heere God wordt maar liefs 25 keer genoemd. Romein. 8:31.

She gives many instructions to Ruth on how to approach Boaz personally.

Als God voor ons is, wie zal tegen ons zijn? Tel je zegeningen nu één voor één en je ziet Gods liefde dan door alles heen. Het hoofdstuk eindigt gelukkig met een positief bericht. Na de lange hongersnood is er gelukkig weer een oogst.

(a). 3a. Ruth had to wash first.

The law of Moses requires ceremonial washings. Actually, Naomi was saying that Ruth had to prepare herself as a bride for her marriage (Ezek.16:9-12).

If the priest in the Old Testament had not washed, he was in danger of dying (Ex. 30:17-21). The Jewish people were aware of God's holiness when they came into His presence (Ps. 15; 24:1-6). Let us imitate this in our lives and keep our own street clean (2 Cor.6:14-7:1).

Ruth 2. Boaz wordt verrast door de LIEFDE en Ruth door Gods rijke genade.

The cleansing water speaks in the Bible above all of God's Word (Eph.5:26)

Niet de bitterheid van Naomi verandert de situatie, maar het geloof van Ruth.

Haar geschiedenis begint met een begrafenis, maar eindigt met een bruiloft.

(b). 3b. Ruth had to anoint herself with oil.

The smell of Ruth had to be attractive (Song of Songs 1:3,12-14;4:11-16). The anointing with oil speaks of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. All born again believers have received that anointing (1 John 2:20,27).

2:1-2. Zoals in een film krijg je nu een blik in de toekomst en daarna gaan ze terug in het verhaal. Boaz is een vreemde voor Ruth. Hij wordt al genoemd.

2:3. Ruth besteedde haar tijd nuttig en zij bestudeert Gods Woord. Zij komt erachter dat er rechten voor de weduwen en de armen zijn (Deut. 24:19-22).

Therefore we should everywhere be a fragrance of the Lord Jesus (2 Cor.2:15).

When Jesus walked the earth, He did His work through the anointing of the Holy Spirit (Luke 4:16-19). If Jesus who was without sin needed the power of the Holy Spirit, how much more do we! We all received the Holy Spirit when we believed and He also wants to help us. (Rom 8 26)

De oogst is van de Heere God, dus heeft Hij het recht om de regels te maken!

That anointing with oil speaks of being filled with the Holy Spirit (Eph.5:18).

(c). 3c. Ruth had to change her clothes.

Voet noot. De maaiers mochten de randen van het veld niet maaien. Zo werd er voorzien in het voedsel voor de armen, de vreemdelingen en de weduwen. Als er iets viel mochten ze het niet oprapen, want dat was ook voor de armen en de weduwen. Die wetten zijn het bewijs dat de Heere God om de weduwen geeft Ex. 23:3; Lev.19:15. De Heere God geeft hen het gebod om niet hebberig te zijn en voor elkaar te zorgen (Ex. 22:22-24). Ruth was een weduwe en een vreemdelinge. Zij spreekt met vastberadenheid tegen Naomi: Laat mij gaan!

She was to take off the clothes of a grieving widow and put on her beautiful dress (Isa. 61:1-3). The clothing also has a spiritual meaning. Our first parents covered themselves with the leaves. Only God could cover their nakedness. That cost the life of an innocent animal (Gen.3:1-8,21). The priest wore special clothing Exodus. 28. Our salvation is like putting on a bunch of new clothes. Isaiah 61:10. We should daily put on the Lord Jesus Rom. 13:14. Nor can we come into His presence with our own righteousness. Those are filthy rags to Him (Isa. 64:6). We are accepted in the Beloved (Eph.1:6). When we sin, we must confess and seek His cleansing to live anew in communion with the Lord (Eccl. 9:8). Let your clothes be white at all times, and let there be no lack of oil on your head.

Naomi stemt toe, maar we lezen niet over een gebed of van een zegengroet.

Ruth weet dat de Heere van haar houdt en ze gelooft ook dat Hij zal voorzien!

(d). Ruth prepares thoroughly.

Naomi's instructions were the only way Ruth could present herself.

Het was de juiste beslissing de juiste akker de juiste tijd en ook de juiste man.

Naomi was a believing Jewess. We can also learn a lot from Jewish believers.

Ps. 32:8. De Heere God geeft ons de beloften dat hij ons zal leiden in ons leven.

Hebr.6:20. Een van de titels van de Heere Jezus is dat Hij onze “Voorloper” is.

She had to lie down at his feet. If Ruth had done it any other way, she would have confused Boaz. He now fully understands her motives. As believers we must abide by the rules (Heb.10:19-26). When we come together, it is important not to do anything that is right in our own eyes.

2:2. Zij ging op pad om genade te vinden in de ogen van de Heer van de oogst.

If anyone has the will to do His will, he will know of this teaching whether it is from God, or whether I speak of myself.

Leave your own agenda at home.That will grieve the Holy Spirit and we will miss the best.

2:10,13. Die genade gaf Boaz haar. Zijn naam betekent: In Hem is mijn kracht!

Het is goed om ons te herinneren dat er goede mensen zijn in slechte tijden.

3:6-9. Ruth surrenders completely to Boaz.

Harvest time is a time of great joy for the Jewish people (Isa.9:3; 16:10; Deut. 16:15). Most people are not concerned with how much work a farmer has to do to harvest. I think our prayers before or after dinner would be different if we looked into it.

De uitlijn voor ons leven, die Ruth en wij behoren te volgen is Spreuken.3:5,6.

2:4. Boaz brengt een geestelijke sfeer. Hij begroet zijn werkers met de Heere!

2:17. The men of the village -each in turn- used the threshing floor to separate the wheat from the chaff. It was often on a hill where the wind blew the wheat from the chaff (Deut. 25:4). The wheat ends in a mountain of gold!

Since the work was often done in the evening with the evening wind, the boss would sleep near that golden mountain to protect it from the rain and the thieves.

De Heere God is centraal in zijn leven, op zijn lippen en ook diep in zijn hart.

We vinden zijn naam Boaz ook terug als een pilaar in de tempel (1 Kon. 7:21).

Feet are mentioned four times in the third chapter (3:4,7,8,14).

2:10. At their first meeting, Ruth fell at Boaz's feet. Now Ruth came to his feet in obedience to Naomi to present herself for a levirate marriage . She therefore asked Boaz whether he would fulfill the law of the Redeemer and the levirate marriage (Deut.25:5-12). You may ask: Why didn't Ruth wait for Boaz? Maybe because he was older and there was another reason Naomi didn't know.

Voetnoot over Boaz als de (Ver) losser. Hij was een familielid van Naomi en in die dagen was er een sociale wet (Lev. 25:23-55) die de armen en de weduwen beschermde, zodat zij niet uitgebuit zouden worden door de rijkeren. Het Land behoort aan de Heere (23).

There was a relative who was closer than him. Because Ruth presents herself, Boaz knows she is interested in Him. At Your feet Lord is the highest place!

Laten we nu terug gaan naar het veld. Ruth was druk bezig met het lezen van de aren. Zij kende Boaz niet en wist ook niet dat ze zijn aandacht had. Zo is het ook met ons.

Jezus de Verlosser kent ons en heeft ons eeuwig lief, lang voordat wij Hem kennen.

Let's think about the different men who wake up surprised.

Het was bij die Boaz: Liefde op het eerste gezicht en het initiatief kwam van Boaz.

Adam woke up and had surgery in his sleep and was a married man. Jacob woke up to find that he had spent the first wedding night not with his lover, but with her older sister. Boaz woke up and he finds a young woman at his feet. I just think like this: The life of faith is full of surprises and it is never dull.

Zijn aandacht ging niet langer naar de oogst uit maar wel naar Ruth. Al was zij een vreemdelinge, ze had wel de aandacht van de jonge mannen (3:10). Boaz had al veel van haar gehoord (2:11). Nu ontmoet hij haar persoonlijk. Wat een prachtige leiding van de Heere. Hij was bezig om iets nieuws in het leven van Ruth te doen. Als we denken aan Boaz als een schaduwbeeld van de Heere Jezus en Ruth als de verloren zondares die buiten het verbond leefde dan word je blij dat het initiatief altijd van de Heere uitgaat die een weg voor haar baant om in de familie van God te komen. Zo is dat met allen die geloven in Jezus (Efz.3:6). Een feit om dankbaar voor te zijn.

When Boaz asked who she was, she no longer calls herself Ruth the Moabite, but Ruth your servant. She speaks in her new position and she is ready for a new beginning. Ruth is mentioned twelve times. Five times in connection with Moab (1:22;2:2,21;4:5,10). It is important to live, think and speak in your new position as believers in the Lord Jesus. Paul also does not write to the sinners, but to the saints at Ephesus (We are all set apart).

2:8. Boaz sprak tot Ruth. Zij durfde niet tegen de Heer van de oogst te spreken.

2:9,14. Hij noemt haar: Mijn dochter en geeft haar de belofte dat zij veilig is.

It is good to know that the Bible was written in the Middle East.

3:10. Dat zijn toch liefdevolle woorden van geborgenheid. Hij was veel ouder. Ruth mocht met de betaalde meisjes lopen. Zo werd zij in de familie gebracht.

Their customs may seem strange to us, but not to them. One thing is important to pass on. She was not next to him, nor under him, but at his feet. When the marriage is publicly contracted, it says that Boaz is going into her and then Ruth becomes pregnant. Entering into her in marriage and the lying of Ruth at Boas his feet are both holy in God's sight!

2:14. Boaz zei ook tegen de werkers dat zij af en toe wat moesten laten vallen. Hij doet er alles aan om haar op haar gemak te stellen en geeft haar voedsel.

Wat een prachtig beeld van Gods genade. De Heer van de oogst werd als één van de knechten en gaf haar brood, zodat hij haar zijn liefde en zorg kon tonen.

3:9. The words of Ruth: Spread your wings over your maidservant, signify that she presents herself to him for marriage. She had already come under the wing of the God of Israel (2:12). Now Ruth longs to come under the wing of Boaz too. What a beautiful picture of marriage as God intended it.

Boaz did this by putting his cloak over her (Ezek. 16:8; 1.Ki.19:19).

2:10-13. Boaz bemoedigt Ruth ook. Zij reageert nederig en dankbaar. Zij erkent zo haar onwaardigheid, aanvaardt zijn genade en gelooft al Zijn beloften. Er is geen plaats voor zorgen. De Heer van de oogst is bij machte om goed voor haar te zorgen. Hij geeft haar beloften en zij gelooft dat hij te vertrouwen is.

Zij kijkt niet terug, niet naar haar zelf. Zij viel aan zijn voeten en gaf zich over.

3:10-14. Ruth listens carefully to Boaz.

Ruth richt zich niet langer op haar armoede, maar op Zijn rijkdom. 2:12,14,18. Boaz zag er op toe dat zij tevreden was. Alles dankzij haar vastberaden geloof!

Because of Boaz's love for Ruth, he immediately accepts her offer!

2:8. He even calls her “My daughter” and blesses her.

Zij had haar bescherming onder de vleugels van de God van Israël gevonden.

Our Heavenly Father and also our Savior are constantly seeking a closer spiritual relationship with us. We are already blessed with all spiritual blessings and already have everything in Him. We also don't have to be afraid to get closer to Him to share His love. Like Ruth, we will be surprised by His understanding and surprises, which are more than we ask or realize (Eph. 3:20).

Voetnoot: Ruth werd niet langer gezien als een vreemdelinge. Zij was al aanvaard door de God van Israël.

The passion of David and Paul was: To know Him more intimately (Phil.3:10).

Zij aanvaardt haar nieuwe positie in geloof en noemt zichzelf niet langer Ruth de Moabitische, maar Ruth uw dienares (3:9). Boaz schaamt zich ook niet voor Ruth, maar hij wil, dat iedereen weet hoe hij over haar denkt (2:11,12).Wat ik zo mooi vind van Ruth is dat zij niet onderste boven raakt van die Boaz, maar doorwerkt totdat de avond valt. Zij kwam om aren te lezen en dat deed zij!

So 5:16 The beloved knew her beloved so well that she even clearly describes his palate. Paul will do anything to live even more intimately.

3:11-13. Boaz gives Ruth complete security.

Op het moment dat Naomi de naam van Boaz hoort, verandert haar houding.

During that night, Ruth -obeying Naomi- could not yet see Boaz's face. She could only hear His voice. He spoke to her with loving certainty. Perhaps she came trembling with fear. Our security is not in our feeling, not in our circumstances, but in His word. Whoever has the Son has Life, and whoever does not have the Son does not have Life. These things have I written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life and that you may believe in the name of the Son of God (1 John 5:12-13). .

There is no more room for fear nor dread! The Lord is my Helper: I will fear no more 3:11. Boaz confirms her and says: Fear not! He calls her a righteous woman (Proverbs 31:10). He also gives her a promise for the future.

Door Boaz en haar getuigenis verdwijnt haar bitterheid en wordt zij weer die lieflijke Naomi en tot zegen voor Ruth. De meer dan Boaz, de Heere Jezus, is bij machte om alle bitterheid weg te nemen omdat Hij een bestemming geeft.

We can be sure: What God begins, He ends. Naomi thought it was a simple act. It turns out to be more complicated.

2:20. Wij horen een nieuw woord van Naomi: Het woord: Gezegend (Baruch).

There is someone closer in their family. Most likely a brother of Elimelech. Boaz does not deny her this problem. He is honest, transparent and sincere! He doesn't want to send her home with a false hope in her heart. Boaz cares about them both and wants Naomi and Ruth to be redeemed.

Zij spreekt niet alleen de zegenbede over Ruth uit, maar ook aan de Heere God.

When we think of the "more than Boaz" we see a beautiful illustration.

Naomi had nieuwe hoop omdat zij wist wie Boaz is. Een (Ver) losser die rijk is en invloed heeft. Een Losser kon een familie redden en een nieuw begin geven. Naomi had ook hoop vanwege alle dingen, die Boaz deed en al gedaan heeft.

The problem. We humans are sinners and that has consequences. The soul that sins will die (Ezek. 18:4). The Lord shares that honestly in His Word and with all of us. He doesn't shy away from that problem! Before Him there was no other Redeemer. Only His only “Beloved Son” could solve the problem! Rom. 8:32 How shall he, who spared not even his own Son, but delivered up for us all, also with him give us “all things”?

Als je nadenkt over de Heere Jezus dan is er geen plaats voor wanhoop meer!

3:15-17. Ruth receives gifts from Boaz.

During Ruth's gleaning period, Boaz had been generous.

The reapers left her alone, occasionally dropping a few heads on purpose. 2:14. He had shared the meal with her and gave her bread from his own hand. He not only taken awat her fears, but also makes promises for the future. He gives her grain because he loves her so much. He wants to marry her, and he does not want her to wander through all the fields like a poor gleaner.

3:16. It says: Who are you my daughter? I think Naomi means to say, Are you still the Moabite widow or are you the future wife of Boaz?

2:19-21. Ruth remembers all the words of Boaz and she shares everything. Ruth shows the gifts. Naomi knows enough! A man who shows such gifts to his mother-in-law-to-be is a good choice for both of them.

2:22. Naomi is niet langer meer bitter maar dankbaar. Nu luistert Ruth wel naar haar!

1:21. Naomi could no longer say that her hands are empty. They are already full of the Mercy of that Kinsman and Redeemer. They will fill up even more when I think of that baby being placed in her hands (4:16). Ruth's faith and obedience had also changed her life.

De Heere God heeft Ruth en Boaz gebruikt om Naomi van binnenuit te veranderen. De liefde van Boaz voor Ruth dringt hem van binnenuit ertoe aan om zijn genade aan haar te blijven tonen en haar in van alles te voorzien. Voor allen die geloven is het zo dat de liefde van Jezus ons dringt. Als wij in Jezus blijven, dan blijven geloof, hoop en liefde ons volgen.

3:18. Ruth must wait now, but she knows that Boaz will not rest.

Heb. 6:12;10:36. Through faith and patience we also receive the inheritance.

Ps 37:5. commit your way to the Lord and trust in Him, He will do it!

This encourages me so: Sit still (3:18), stand still (Ex. 14:13) and be still (Ps. 46:10)!

The Lord Jesus is always at work. It is a sign of our confidence in the greater than Boaz when we become quiet and let Him have His way in our lives!
