Encourage you open your Bibles to Genesis Genesis chapter 4? We are doing like a, a brief overview of the Old Testament here in this fall leading all the way through Christ birth.
Now again the Old Testament, there's a lot in there, so we're only hitting some of the highlights but is it is important that we look at these things and remember now, the two questions as we go through this, to remember the two questions that we ask as we read through the passages here,
What do we learn about God?
And what do we learn about ourselves?
What we learn about Mankind and and today in particular, we're going to see a lot of that.
Again, it's, it's titled Cain and Abel.
This is something is familiar for, for most people are spending time in the Bible, but in reality, it's not on scene.
Very long.
It's, it's mostly God and Kane, but in that interaction, we, we get to learn a lot about our God.
And we can see a lot about ourselves last week as we went through with Adam and Eve.
We learn about ourselves.
We're often just like me.
What did they do?
Once they did what God told them, not to do.
The first thing he did was hide.
Tell me, try to cover up.
And then, they deflect and they blame.
Just the way we act, when we do things that are wrong, we can try to hide, we can try to cover up.
So, nobody's notices and then if somebody does know this week, and if it was your fault, because if you wouldn't have liked Adam, if you want to give me this woman,
We disliked him play with Kane.
We're going to see a whole another set of of reactions that I think are also very descriptive of how we tend to act.
We're going to start and we're going to read through the passage and work our way through one section at a time.
And I were going to start here in Genesis chapter 4. Starting at verse 1 says, Adam made love to his wife, even she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.
And she said, with the help of the Lord, I have brought forth a man later she gave birth to her brother Abel.
Now able kept flocks and Kane work the soil.
In the course of time Cain brought some fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord, and able also brought an offering that portions from some of the firstborn of his flock.
The Lord look with favor on a boy and his offering but Owen Cain and his offering.
He did not look with favor.
So Cain was very angry.
His face was Down cast.
Say so downcast.
Let's go ahead and pray and ask God to speak to us this morning.
Father again this is your word which is powerful and effective sharper than any double-edged sword.
Lord, it does Johnson talk to that.
She's in her heart, that I pray that you would use it today.
Use it to show us ourselves, use it to remind us of who you are and what you like.
So that we worship you in spirit and truth and spray this in Jesus name, amen.
Why do the questions I said?
Or what do we learn about God?
What do we learn about, man.
But one of the very first questions that pops into the Mind here is okay, wait a minute, all of a sudden, they're making sacrifices.
What is this all about?
Where did this come from?
When you started with creation?
We have I don't need, put in the garden and now all of a sudden cavemen table are born and they're making sacrifices.
Where did that come from?
Again, this was written by Moses.
After they came out of Egypt, the first five books of the Bible Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers.
Deuteronomy, all written by Moses Genesis and exodus probably and Leviticus written there while they were at Mount Sinai, most likely.
And so at Mount Sinai swear God instituted the whole law and sacrifice system for the Israelites.
And so the question is, why are we doing this?
Well, this gives a little bit of background that sacrifice is something that God had right from the beginning.
Almost.
And where did it?
Where did it all start?
Well, again, I almost have to read behind the lines a little bit here, but we see that after Adam and Eve sinned, he made garments of skin for Adam and Eve and close them.
Again, we saw this as well as a result last week that even after he questioned them, they don't repent with the questioning and any gives them the punishment.
We still see that he cares for them.
Just like a parent.
You won't try to talk to your kid.
They don't respond.
You have to get some punishment, but do you stop caring for them?
Oh, and same way, God still care for them, he closed them.
Where did he get the skins?
Obviously an animal had to die to get those skins.
I believe that this is where God for showed Adam and Eve.
Hey look, death is the result of seeing the wages of sin is death?
And this should be a reminder.
Every time you put on these clothes, should be a reminder death.
Death is the result of your sin.
And so this was a reminder we know from the the book of Hebrews that sacrifices, never take away soon.
The blood of bulls Argos, never took away sin rather.
They were an annual, reminder of sense.
Looking forward to how God was going to take care of since eventually with the ultimate sacrifice.
Jesus Christ, will this, I believe is where the garments actually took place.
Now, where do they get the whole idea of, of green offerings, everything else again, everything that Cain and Abel did lined up?
Exactly.
Was he sacrifices that God told the Israelites to do again there at Mount Sinai when Paul, or when Moses was writing all this wood, Leviticus, I got to get Paul out of my hair.
If we did Colossians for so long.
Alright, Moses was writing all the law sacrifice in, Leviticus, he talks about anyone bringing a grain offering the Lord, their offerings to be the finest flower.
Poor olive oil in, it put incense on it.
And so, from there to take Aaron's sons a priest, a priest, shall take a handful, the flour and oil together within sansburn.
This as a memorial portioning on the altar.
A food offering an aroma pleasing to the Lord sacrificing from the crops of the field is something that is pleasing to the Lord.
Remembering that he is our provider.
Should have been a pleasing aroma.
Will same thing with a table with his sacrifice.
It was just like the sacrifices that God told them to do from their flocks and their herds.
And this is just one verse kind of summarizes.
Priest, shall burn them in the owners of food, offering a pleasing Aroma.
All the fact is the Lord's and again, right here in Genesis says that he brought the offering fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock.
Again, if you did more study on the sacrifices, you would see the fat person you would see firstborn of the flock, all these things lining up with, exactly the way the Israelites are doing their sacrifices, sacrifice, is something that God instituted way back without him.
An even again he didn't give us all the full details here in this part because this is just a brief summary, run up to here's how it's supposed to be done that.
He gave to the Israelites there, a Mount Sinai.
But the question is, okay.
Well if the grain offering is approved and it's a pleasing Aroma and the one from the flock is a pleasing Aroma then why was only one approved?
Why was Abel's approved by God and Canes was not they're both legitimate sacrifices.
God actually answers this question for us very well and Hebrews chapter 11.
If you want you can open up your Bibles there and will be referencing Hebrews 11 in the coming weeks as well.
But Hebrews 11 starting at verse 1 says now Faith is confidence in what we hope for and I'm sure it's about what we do not see this is what the Ancients were commended for by faith.
