This Week’s Theme: Disciples Strive after God
This Week’s Word is Disciple: A disciple is a learner who knows Christ, a student who is being changed by Christ, and a pupil who has surrendered to the mission of Christ.
Memory Verse: Matthew 4:19 “19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.””
Essence of the Text in a Sentence: Jesus invited men to go with Him with the understanding that He would make them fishers of men.
Sermon Proposition: A Christian is one who has accepted Jesus’ invitation to follow Him with the understanding of making them disciple-makers.
Sermon Objective: I want those in attendance to judge their acceptance of Christ’s invitation and the level of their pursuit of Christ.
Sermon Text: Matthew 4:18-22
Matthew 4:18–22 NKJV
18 And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 They immediately left their nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
INTRODUCTION:
TRANSITION:

I. THE PETITION HAS BEEN EXTENDED

Matthew 4:18-19; 10:37-38; Luke 9:57-62; 14:16-20; John 12:26;

TO STEER YOUR LIFE

Matthew 4:19 NKJV
19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Explain: [know this about God / know this about man]
Matthew 9:9 NKJV
9 As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him.

DON’T BE HASTY

Luke 9:57–58 NKJV
57 Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”

DON’T HESITATE

Luke 9:59–60 NKJV
59 Then He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”

DON’T BE A HYPOCRITE

Luke 9:61–62 NKJV
61 And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Luke 14:16–20 NKJV
16 Then He said to him, “A certain man gave a great supper and invited many, 17 and sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’ 18 But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’ 19 And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’ 20 Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’
Matthew 10:37–38 NKJV
37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.
Matthew 10:38 “And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.
John 12:26 NKJV
26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.
John 10:27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

Did you accept the correct invitation from Christ? If no, will you accept it today?

TO SHAPE YOUR LIFE

Matthew 4:19 NKJV
19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
DID YOU HEAR WHAT CHRIST SAID? HE SAID I WILL MAKE YOU!
THE INVITATION IS TO FOLLOW HIM WITH THE PROMISE (I WILL)
TO MAKE, FASHION, FORM, MOLD, CREATE,
YOU INTO SOMETHING ELSE OR SOMEONE ELSE, THIS IS WHY PAUL SAID IN 2 COR 5:17
2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
PAUL IS ACKNOWLEDGING THAT CHRIST IS DOING JUST WHAT HE SAID. IN THIS VERSE “FOLLOWING CHRIST” IS THE SAME AS BEING “IN CHRIST”
YOU ARE A NEW CREATION “I WILL MAKE YOU”
THE OLD THIS HAVE PASSED AWAY AND ALL THINGS HAVE BECOME NEW
FROM A OLD WICKED WALK TO A NEW RIGHTEOUS WALK
OLD SINFUL CONVERSATION TO A NEW SPIRITUAL CONVERSATION
OLD AWFUL ATTITUDE TO A NEW ADORING ATTITUDE
OLD CORRUPT HEART TO A CLEAN HEART
OLD DESPICABLE SPIRIT TO A DECENT SPIRIT
OLD LIFE IN CONDEMNATION TO A NEW LIFE IN CHRIST
Matthew 4:19 NKJV
19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
CHRIST IS SAYING I PROMISE TO FASHION YOU INTO FISHERS OF MEN.
THE ANDREW AND PETER, JAMES AND JOHN WERE FISHERMEN.
CHRIST TOLD THEM THAT MEN, WOMEN, BOYS, AND GIRLS ARE THE NEW ADJECTIVE, NOT CARP, TILAPIA, PRAWN, SEA BASS, OR SALMON
CHRIST WANTED TO TURN THESE
BORISH MEN to Believers
CALLUS MEN to Christians
DIFFICULT MEN to Disciples
FOOLISH FISHERMAN to Followers of Christ
Apply: [embrace this about God / embrace this about man]

Have you allowed Christ to fulfill His promise? If no, why? If yes, how?

II. THE PURSUIT IS ON

Matthew 4:18, 20-22; John 6:68;
Matthew 4:18 NKJV

What needs to happen in your life today so you will pursue Christ fully?

Will you repent today?
Will you Address God?
Will you Admit your sin to God?
