Last week we introduced you to the final part of our churches doctrinal statement on The Return of Jesus.
I want to start this morning by looking at the actual statement:
Our Statement on the Return of Jesus
We believe Jesus will return in power and glory to reign.
It has been declared in scripture that no man knows the hour of his return, only the Father.
On that day, Jesus will gather his people to himself and they will be glorified bodily and spiritually.
He will crush his enemies and the order of creation will be destroyed in fire.
At that time, all will be raised to be judged according to the book of life: those who have not trusted in Jesus for salvation face eternal punishment; those who persevere in Christ will dwell eternally with him in the new heaven and the new earth.
All people are to live in light of his coming.
What is the point of life?
1.
To build a better future for our kids.
Will this fix the issue of death?
2. To build a better earth for the future.
Will this fix the issue of death?
3. To build a better life for myself.
Will this fix the issue of death?
4. To build a life around the Gospel.
Will this fix the issue of death?
Only a life lived in and for the Gospel solves the issue of death.
Only the death and Resurrection of Jesus secures our freedom from the tyranny of death.
Jesus sacrifice paid the price for our sins and His resurrection conquered the power of death so we could be set free by having our faith put in him.
This morning we are going to answer the question of what happens to those who believe when Jesus returns.
We call this, the resurrection.
The Resurrection
Jesus is the Proof
The importance of the resurrection.
The Resurrection and His Return
What about those who have died?
Let’s look at 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Jesus will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
vs. 14
The dead in Christ will rise first.
Vs. 16
What happens when a believer dies and where are they before his return?
When?
Today!
Where?
With Jesus!
What about those who are alive when he returns?
Our bodies will be changed, they will be glorified!
Death has lost it’s sting!
Beyond the perishable!
Our body will be like his glorious body!
We shall be like Him!
No more Pain!
Responding to the Promise of His Return and the Hope of Resurrection
The knowledge of the resurrection gives us wings!
The Knowledge that He has chosen us gives us assurance!
So we come to the table of our Lord’s supper with the assurance of His resurrection to remember what it cost for our sins to be forgiven.
