The Lord’s Prayer Revisited

1-11-09

Pray 4336 προσεύχομαι [proseuchomai /pros·yoo·khom·ahee/] v. From 4314 and 2172; TDNT 2:807; TDNTA 279; GK 4667; 87 occurrences; AV translates as “pray” 83 times, “make prayer” three times, and “pray for” once. 1 to offer prayers, to pray.

Then like 3767 οὖν [oun /oon/] particle. Apparently a root word; GK 4036; 526 occurrences; AV translates as “therefore” 263 times, “then” 197 times, “so” 18 times, “and” 11 times, “now” nine times, “wherefore” eight times, “but” five times, not translated nine times, and translated miscellaneously six times. 1 then, therefore, accordingly, consequently, these things being so.

This 3779 οὕτως [houto, or (before a vowel) , houtos /hoo·to/] adv. From 3778; GK 4048; 213 occurrences; AV translates as “so” 164 times, “thus” 17 times, “even so” nine times, “on this wise” six times, “likewise” four times, “after this manner” three times, and translated miscellaneously 10 times. 1 in this manner, thus, so.

Disciples saw something in Jesus’ prayer life

·                    Sparkle of reality they didn’t have

What we’re going to do today is revisit the patter on Prayer the Lord gave us

·                    Explain pattern

·                    Good/important to memorize prayer

·                    Important to explore pattern—IMPORTANT TO REVIEW

·                    Use it in prayer life

·                    Pattern is a doorway to greatest adventure in prayer

 RECITE

Our Father, in Heaven

·                    Connection with Father

3962 προπάτωρ, πατήρ [pater /pat·ayr/] n m. So what does it mean to HALLOW a name?

·                    HALLOWEDING the name of God

37 ἁγιάζω, ἀνασῴζω [hagiazo /hag·ee·ad·zo/] v. From 40; TDNT 1:111; TDNTA 14; GK 39 and 420; 29 occurrences; AV translates as “sanctify” 26 times, “hallow” twice, and “be holy” once. 1 to render or acknowledge, or to be venerable or hallow. 2 to separate from profane things and dedicate to God. 2a consecrate things to God. 2b dedicate people to God. 3 to purify. 3a to cleanse externally. 3b to purify by expiation: free from the guilt of sin. 3c to purify internally by renewing of the soul.

That’s why when we take the Lord’s name in vain

·                    It is such a SIN

·                    When we PROFANE the name of God

·                    (Notice:  enemy attacks the name of God

·                    Why?  He knows the POWER of the name

·                    The POWER in a PEOPLE who hallow the name of God

·                    And understand its power

·                    He’s trying to SABOTAGE you when you use the Lord’s name in vain

·                    And BLOCK the power of that Holy and Mighty Name in your life)

Note:  When there is a HABIT of honor/respect/love towards loved ones in life

·                    That VALUE in your heart

o       Shape our lives

·                    Changes how you LIVE

o       We shape our lives

o       Around that which we have a passion for

o       Example passion for “”

o       Clothes/posters/etc.

·                    They are BRANDED by what their passion is

·                    Think about that—develop

Our passion first needs to be the Lord

·                    Need to wear that passion on our lives

·                    One of the ways to build passion

·                    Is to WORSHIP Him

·                    When we WORSHIP Him—discover Him—powerful

Beauty of Prayer

o       Know What???  You have the EAR of the King

You have the heart of the King—He cares about you

·                    There is a decreeing of the power and the presence of the King when the saints pray this way

Beauty of Lord’s prayer

·                    Each section moves from the most intimate places of our life—to the most distant places we face

·                    Kingdom Come—will be done—over CHURCH

o       City—Businesses—Nations—Economy—etc.

Each night—focus both will be for individual needs/burdens

·                    And global—big picture

 

Wednesday

Give us this day our daily bread

·                    I’m glad this part

o       God CARES about your needs

o       Wants to release RESOURCE—provision

·                    Want to Break FEAR off life in these areas and Release Faith

·                    CONTENDING FOR

·                    THIS day

When I hear Give us this day . . . –I think of a lot of things: 

·                    Resource—provision

o       Keeping the channels OPEN—

o       Not clogged—or blocked

o       Something to the faithful PRAYER—that does something (develop)

·                    VISION

o       Word

§        What do I do for my FUTURE? JOB? CAREER? Etc

o       Provision—PRO-Vision

o       Release

Forgiveness For those that have sinned against us

From 3784; TDNT 5:565; TDNTA 746; GK 4050; Seven occurrences; AV translates as “debtor” five times, “sinner” once, and “which owed” once. 1 one who owes another, a debtor. 1a one held by some obligation, bound by some duty. 1b one who has not yet made amends to whom he has injured:. 1b1 one who owes God penalty or whom God can demand punishment as something due, i.e. a sinner.

Jesus said part of the REGULAR part of Christian life

·                    You will NEED forgiveness

·                    Others will  Need you to forgive THEM

FRIDAY: 

Lead us Not into Temptation—But Deliver us from Evil

Temptation  3986 πειρασμός [peirasmos /pi·ras·mos/] n m. From 3985; TDNT 6:23; TDNTA 822; GK 4280; 21 occurrences; AV translates as “temptation” 19 times, “temptations” once, and “try” once. 1 an experiment, attempt, trial, proving. 1a trial, proving: the trial made of you by my bodily condition, since condition served as to test the love of the Galatians toward Paul (Gal. 4:14). 1b the trial of man’s fidelity, integrity, virtue, constancy. 1b1 an enticement to sin, temptation, whether arising from the desires or from the outward circumstances. 1b2 an internal temptation to sin. 1b2a of the temptation by which the devil sought to divert Jesus the Messiah from his divine errand. 1b3 of the condition of things, or a mental state, by which we are enticed to sin, or to a lapse from the faith and holiness. 1b4 adversity, affliction, trouble: sent by God and serving to test or prove one’s character, faith, holiness. 1c temptation (i.e. trial) of God by men. 1c1 rebellion against God, by which his power and justice are, as it were, put to the proof and challenged to show themselves.

Love fact the Lord teaches us to pray about temptation

·                    TOO MANY BELIEVERS don’t pray about TEMPTATION in their Lives

·                    We’re too PASSIVE

·                    TOO MANY don’t ASK to be DELIVERED from evil Daily

 

If the PATTERN of prayer is to request that we are not led into temptation

·                    That we are delivered from evil

·                    Then Doesn’t it stand to reason, if we DON’T pray

·                    Then we are more VULNERABLE to temptation

·                    More VULNERABLE to Evil????

Think about it, Christians . . . !!!!!!

 

How many want to be more vulnerable to Temptation?  Evil?

*        How many want children to be vulnerable to temptation?  Evil?

·                    Achilles heal

·                    Close rear guard

·                    PATTERNS of TEMPTATION

·                    +Broken off lives—families—etc

·                    How VERBAL are you about REGULARLY praying about the temptations that come against your life?

·                    The evil that comes against your life?

·                    Place where you need to be DELIVERED from patterns of evil????

·                    Victim yelling ‘Fire!’  (develop)

How about those in families??

·                    Community

·                    Specific places

·                    We need to pray

·                    Deliver us from evil!!!

I believe as we fast and pray in this PATTERN

·                    And we lift up the area in our lives—personally—corporately—community

·                    I believe there is going to be a release of promise

·                    Release walls of protection—SEEDS of promise are gonna GROW

·                    We need to keep praying pattern—to protect the fruit

How many MORE excited about the Lord’s Prayer?

·                    Has evil had pattern over life?  Family?
