Romans 6:1-14

6:2 Grace cannot be exploited for evil ends! Because of our union with Christ we are dead to sin and are alive unto God (v. 11).

A dead person will not respond.

death to sin is separation from the ruling power of sin in one’s own life (v. 14).

We may be dead to sin but we still have our body, which is sinful.

6:3 baptized into Jesus Christ.

Baptism with the Holy Spirit joins the believer to Christ, separating him from the old life and associating him with the new. He is no longer “in Adam” but is “in Christ.”

6:4 Water baptism portrays this truth.

• Baptism is only for the believer (Acts 8:37)

• If we died with Christ, why don’t we live for Him?

(Gk. sumphutos) (6:5) G4854: The expression, which occurs only here in the New Testament, means “to grow in union” or “to plant in union.” The word describes two plants that have been planted together and are growing together, closely entwined or even united. The context speaks of union, our union with Christ in His death (6:4) and resurrection (6:5). Our union with Christ in death is like being planted with Him. Like a seed, our sinful natures must die with Christ so that we might grow in Christ and bear spiritual fruit (John 12:24). Our union with Christ is now a loving union, in which we are growing with Him “in the likeness of His resurrection.”

6:6 We should not serve sin (we are no longer slaves to it.)

Ephesians 4:22 - 24 (NKJV) 22that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
If we do sin, 1 John 1:9
6:7 freed. Lit., justified; i.e., sin has no legal right to be the master over us.

We are freed from sin to serve God (6:11,22)

6:9-10 once (for all). Christ died once; therefore, we can only be saved once.

6:12 We must either dethrone sin or obey its evil desires.

6:13 Neither yield ye your members … unto sin … but yield yourselves unto God. The tenses may imply “stop offering your members unto sin … but offer yourselves once for all unto God.” Paul exhorts us to make our experience conform to our position. yield. A decision to dedicate the years of one’s life to God (as also in 12:1).
