God will judge the wicked among us

Jude vs 5-10

Preached in Southbridge on 5-20-07

Introduction:

Friday I watched a program on how police and counselors use techniques that often lead people to have what they now call false memories. They had volunteers come in and they talked with them about their childhood memories and with one woman they asked her about the time she was lost in a mall for a short time and the woman said she never had been lost and doesn’t remember that, which was true she never was but a week later they asked about this event and she said that she remember it and swore that this was a real memory of hers. Then they went on to show two real life situations that one man was locked up for 11 years for rape that later DNA evidence and a confession from another man showed he was innocent. The other was of a religious man who was a pastor and had a loving wife and four daughters. One of his daughters went to talk with a counselor while she was working in a cancer wing of a hospital. It was very stressful and she spent two days talking with this counselor and was about to be done she had 15 minuets left and the counselor ask if there was anything else she wanted to talk about she said no but after the counselor persisted she said she had been having strange dreams about her father. The woman spent the next two years in therapy and ended up accusing her father of molestation from the age of 7 – 14. After the family was destroyed and this man lost his job as pastor and the community shunned him the father asked her to go to a OBGYN and it was shown that the woman was still a virgin and that this therapist had used these techniques to plant false memories in her mind. They are now reunited and the family has put all of this behind them.

You have probably heard of criminals getting off because of a technicality of the law or for lack of witnesses to testify. Probably the most famous case was the O.J. Simpson case were O.J. ended up being set free but after that trial was found guilty of wrongful deaths and he had to pay the families of the victims millions of dollars. But he is free. I think about these things on occasion and have to question were is justice? Sometimes I ask where is God in all of this. because we see people who are convicted of crimes that they never committed or those who committed crimes being released.

Jude is dealing with a group of Christians who are being lead astray, abused, and are being divided by men who are supposed to be godly leaders in the church. What they are is in fact false Elders and false teachers. These Christians may be asking where is God in all of this. Jude gives these Christians three examples of people and angels who were doing things that these men were doing and that God judged them. No one gets away with anything. God knows all and is holy and just.

God will judge, there is no maybe, the fact is that God judged in the past and he will judge the wicked now and in the future at the final judgment. God is not going to have false memories or anything like that.

Let’s turn to Jude vs 5-10

Jude gives us three examples. The first one is the Exodus.

1)      The Exodus

i)        Jud 1:5 Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.

ii)      Here we have Jude reminding these Christians about the Exodus. You remember how the children of Jacob went down to Egypt and there they lived with Joseph who was the second in command over all Egypt. But after Jacob and Joseph died a new pharaoh got into power who didn’t know Joseph. He began to enslave the Israelites. They ended up working extremely long hard days and were abused. There children were even thrown in to the river to be drowned and eaten by the crocodiles. Then God brought a man named Moses to deliver Israel, It wasn’t Moses but God who delivered them but God used Moses and Aaron to speak to the people and Pharaoh. We read in Exodus how God brought a people out of Egypt and saved them.

iii)    We have them crossing the red sea, getting water from a rock, manna, and all kinds of other miracles.

iv)     But as time went on there were some who rebelled, in fact there were many on many occasions who rebelled, didn’t believe the promises of God. He destroyed them by opening up the ground, or sending snakes, or by making them wander in the desert for forty years. We have them grumbling over food and water and about who is in charge and over which God they would serve as they at one time fashion a golden calf to worship. All the way up to the very gates of the promise land. God destroyed many who he saved out of Egypt who rebelled against him and didn’t believe.

v)      What can we learn from this?

(1)   God is going to judge all, we rebel then you can count on that

(2)   If you or I turn away from God we too will be judged and find ourselves left out of the kingdom of Heaven.

(a)   There is no such thing as once saved always saved. These Israelites were all saved at one time but not all were faithful and not many made it to the Promised Land.

(b)   1Jn 1:7  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

(c)    But if we walk in the darkness we will be judged.

(d)   1Pe 4:17 talks about judgment starting in the household of God

2)      Lets take the next example: Angels

a)      Jud 1:6 And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day—

b)      The angels were created perfect and sinless and were given positions of authority by God. These were God given positions. But the angels who were in positions of authority were judged for leaving their positions. They were proud and wanted more than what they were given. Here is another example of those who God had placed in certain positions of authority who rebelled against him and were judged and are going to be thrown into hell. That means that just because a person is in a position of authority a God given position doesn’t mean they can do what ever they want if they leave that position because they want more power or authority or if they rebel in any way they too will be judged.

c)      That one comes straight at me as I am standing up here speaking the word of God I am in a position of authority. I need to be diligent to teach what the truth is and not allow pride or anything else take my eyes off of Christ. No preacher, elder, deacon, or anyone else is going to be able to rebel against God and be saved. That’s a sober warning for all of us but especially for those of you who are in positions of leadership. Family group leaders, preachers, leaders.

The third example is of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and the other cities:

3) Sodom and Gomorrah

d)     Jud 1:7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

e)      What are these cities known for? These were wicked cities in that they practiced all kinds of sexual sins. The cities were judged for the sexual immorality. In our day and age every kind of perversion is out there from fornication, to homosexuality, to bestiality, and incest. God is going to judge those who practice such things. Even if they claim to be a Christian and go to church. If you are in a sexual relation with someone who you are not married to you are going to be judged. That includes adultery or just having sex outside of marriage.

f)       Can God forgive you? yes he can and will if you repent that is turn away from your sin and walk after him. That means you stop doing what you’re doing and come to Christ. If you’re a Christian it means stopping that sin and confessing to God and maybe to others depending on what the situation is. But don’t be fooled because God isn’t, if you practice such things God will judge like he did with Sodom and Gomorrah.

g)      1Co 6:9-10 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

h)      If we practice such things we will be destroyed and spend eternity in hell.

3)      Conclusion

a)      We need to heed the warning. We will not be able to say that because we were in Christ that we could sin all we want and God will still save us and not judge us. We must be on our guard against sin. But this should also give us comfort that those who practice these kinds of thing will be judged.

b)      There is both a warning and an assurance that the wicked will not go unpunished. The man or woman in this life who seems to be getting away with stealing, cheating, or anything else will be judged justly by God.

Just before the death of actor W.C. Fields, a friend visited Fields' hospital room and was surprised to find him thumbing through a Bible. He Asked what he was doing with a Bible, Fields replied, "I'm looking for loopholes."

There aren’t any loopholes those who walk after the flesh, whether they come to a church building or not will be judged by God.

2Co 5:10  For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

We must continue to keep our eyes on Christ and walk in the light as he is in the light.
