Faith vs Law

At the beginning of Chapter 5, Paul present two options to the church of Galatia...
Freedom in Christ (Faith)
Yoke of Bondage (Law)
Three concepts we need to understand from the first verse.
The terms of our relationship with God are important (by faith or by works)
It drives all other relationships we have in our lives.
We forgive because we have been forgiven, mercy/received mercy, etc Matt 18:21-35
We must stand fast
World teaches tolerance (especially if you don’t have the right ideas)
Men need to keep quiet
Women must conform to their image
As Christians, we must fight these ideas with the word of God
1 Co 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord...
We are urged not to return to the yoke of bondage
They were being warned not to fall back into slavery under the law
Eph 2:8-9
This greek word for entangled in the same word used in Matt 22:15 when the Pharisees plotted how that might “entangle” Jesus
Notice the intentions of the false teachers
Matt 23:4

Justified by the Law?

Verses 2-12 should be read through the lens of Justification
What is Justification?

a forensic term, opposed to condemnation. As regards its nature, it is the judicial act of God, by which he pardons all the sins of those who believe in Christ, and accounts, accepts, and treats them as righteous in the eye of the law, i.e., as conformed to all its demands. In addition to the pardon (q.v.) of sin, justification declares that all the claims of the law are satisfied in respect of the justified. It is the act of a judge and not of a sovereign. The law is not relaxed or set aside, but is declared to be fulfilled in the strictest sense; and so the person justified is declared to be entitled to all the advantages and rewards arising from perfect obedience to the law (Rom. 5:1–10).

It proceeds on the imputing or crediting to the believer by God himself of the perfect righteousness, active and passive, of his Representative and Surety, Jesus Christ (Rom. 10:3–9). Justification is not the forgiveness of a man without righteousness, but a declaration that he possesses a righteousness which perfectly and for ever satisfies the law, namely, Christ’s righteousness (2 Cor. 5:21; Rom. 4:6–8).

Visual Rom 5:16-18
vs 2 Paul is saying if you think you are justified through circumcision (works/law), Christ profits you nothing.
There is no profit through the Law, only through Faith.
vs 3 on the contrary, you are now a debtor to the whole law (Jam 2:10-11)
this does not create freedom and liberty in Christ but leads men to condemnation or pride
Condemnation- I must do more to be accepted, constant working, never able to rest
Pride- I’ve made it based on my own works,
this leads to broken relationships, not based in Love but in Law
vs 4 You have become void to Christ (lost connection) you have released yourself from Him. Ro 7:2
If you think you have been justified through the Law, you no longer stand in Grace. both of these cannot co-exist
Christ already fulfilled the Law on our behalf, he who tries to do this on their own, severs themselves from Christ fulfillment of the Law.
vs 5-6 Although we’ve been Justified, we have been given hope for the future. this hope of righteousness has been given by the Spirit
Rom 5:5, 2 Ti 4:8, Col 1:5, 1 Pe 1:3, Phil 3:9
Only faith gets you to Christ, which works love (new creature)
Vs 7-8 Gives a picture of running a race (spiritual race)
Every Christian believer is a part of this race, we run it together.
Hinder by breaking up the road (someone has driven you back)
You must be able to discern what is from God and what is from man.
You were persuaded by men, and not God
be careful who you listen to
what is your spiritual diet (feeding the flesh or the Spirit)
vs 9 a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump (one person can ruin everything, one small sin can destroy your walk with God) a small portion of works based salvation corrupts the purity of the gospel
You must be careful with what/who you tolerate.
Toxic people
Church
Companies
Relationships
Prov 22:24-25, Rom 16:17-18, Jam 3:16,
Vs 10
Paul speaks to the judgement of the seducer and his confidence of those who were led astray returning
The unrighteous and wicked never get away with their evil deed, they all must bear their judgments (in this life or the next).
This should give hope to the believer, knowing that Christ will accept them back
Rom 8:1
Vs 11 Paul makes the clarification that he does not teach circumcision as the path to salvation (or why would he be persecuted by the Judaizars) *Paul was obviously circumcised

The Abuse of Liberty

In verse 13 Paul says that we’ve been called unto Liberty (from what?)
The Mosaic Law
Sin
Slavish fear
With that being said, Paul warns us of the other side of coin (the freedom to sin)
Rom 6:1-2
It’s unfortunately the opposite side the Law
That most of our problems in life, never balanced, either one extreme or the other.
Paul here is vs 13 is giving us the purpose of the
