Commentary
Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians & Colossians C. The Filling of the Spirit (vv. 15–21)

This filling, then, is best understood, as a command for the believer to yield himself to the illuminating, convicting, and empowering work of the Holy Spirit. As he works in our hearts through his Word, our lives are brought into conformity with the will of God (v. 17). (A fuller and more technical discussion of this matter can be found in “Deeper Discoveries.”)

they need to allow God’s Spirit to transform their lives to be like God and like Christ

as excessive wine “directs” a person’s conduct into debauched behavior, so the divine Spirit can direct us to the godly conduct that fulfills God’s will. In effect, Paul urges his readers to allow God’s Spirit continually to direct their behavior; this is the path of wise living.

Theological Principle
All believers are called to be continually filled with the Spirit.
Analogy
Car
Engine - the Holy Spirit
GPS - the Bible
Purpose - without the engine a car cannot go anywhere, there must an engine. Similarly, being filled with the Spirit means is the engine that make us, conform, and make us hates more of our sins.
The more the Holy Spirit controls our lives the more we are weaken our flesh desires.
