Exodus 20:1-6

1. The purpose of the law

$ To reveal man's sinfulness: Romans 7:7

7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law.

$ To prepare us for the coming of Christ: Gal. 3:24-25

24 Therefore (1)the law was our (2)tutor to bring us to Christ, (3) that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

Commandments 1 & 2

V.1: This is the word of God, and when God speaks we had better listen

V.2: "LORD" = Yahweh, God uses His personal name. He is a personal God.

"Brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage." Just as Christ sets us free, today.

John 8:36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed."

God reminded them, because He wants them to remember. We, also, need to remember what Jesus did for us.

V.3: God comes first, and Jesus is God : John 10:30 30 I and My Father are one.

We can put no one before Him, because He is the only true God:

Jeremiah 10:10 10 But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King.

We can put no one before Him, because there is no other means of salvation:

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

NKJ Acts 4:12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

V.4: This idolatry is precisely what Paul was talking about in Romans 1:21-25.

V.5: God is rightfully and righteously jealous, because it is wrong to put your faith elsewhere. Anyplace else will land you in hell. Jealousy is not always wrong. It is only wrong when it leads to covetousness.

This type of behavior (idolatry) when learned at home, will be passed on for generations, and will bring nothing but disaster

V.6: God extends tremendous grace and mercy for those who love Him.
