Haggai #5

Haggai 2:6-9

When God Rebuilds the House

We have now been studying the book of Haggai for 4 sermons

We have studied a country, Judah, chosen by God to be a light to the Gentiles.

Recipients of God’s Special Revelation of his name and his nature

Recipients of his nurturing hand

Recipients of a special land

But Israel splintered into two Nations, Israel made up of the 10 tribes to the north and Judah made up of 2 southern tribes.  Both nations turned their backs on God.  Both nations experienced God’s hand of Judgment and were carried off into captivity by pagan nations.

Only Judah returned to their land

As we have learned that in 535 BC Cyrus gave the order for those who desired to return and build the Lord’s House in Jerusalem

We also learned that they started the foundation and then did nothing else for 16 years.

So Haggai enters the scene with a word from God

He tells them that the Lord has been disciplining them with natural disasters calling them to building.

So the people began building on the foundation on the 24th day of the 6th month, 24 days after his message.  Then on the 21st day of the 7th month he speaks to them again as they continue the work.

And so in this message, looking to the Future … God continues to speak.

Days like July 4th are days when we look back and that is fine

We look back to a country founded on the principles of liberty, freedom of speech and religion, opportunity and promise.

But if we only look back what do we have?

If the best is behind us, what a sad state of affairs.

Some of you are trying to build a life

Some of you are trying to rebuild a life

Things have been good in the past

Or maybe they were good for someone else and you are afraid YOUR opportunity is gone

I am here to tell you that as long as it is called Today
There is still an offer

There is still an opportunity

The offer of Eternal Life Still Stands

The offer of Hope still stands

The offer of a God who says “Behold I stand at the door and knock, if anyone will hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and dine, dwell, with him and he with me”

The Offer still stands …

You do not have to be defined by your past

Good or  bad, the past has passed …

If you will seek Christ, the best is yet to come.

READ Haggai 1:6-9

Three sections I have grouped, all using the letters C and T … so you can stay with me

If you will seek God

If you will build your life, your house, if we will again build this nation on God … there are things we can be sure of

Now, I can’t guarantee that America will ever again be a champion of Christ and Biblical Truth.

But I can point us to the only Hope

If this country is to be a godly nation … it will be made up of Godly States

If there are two be godly States, they will be made up of godly Cities

If there are to be godly cities they will be built of godly neighborhoods

If there are to be godly neighborhoods, they will be built by godly familes

If there will ever be godly families they will be comprised of godly Fathers, Mothers, Children

If there are to be godly Fathers, Mothers, Children they are obviously godly people who have built their lives on the Lord Jesus Christ, through a Salvation that comes by Grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

So people who build their lives on the Lord Jesus Christ can expect God to build, rebuild their lives and I can promise you some things …

Will you build your house on Jesus Christ?

Will you make this book, the Word of God your Guide, Direction, Rule Book, Instruction manual?

If you will … There is a …

1. Certainty  of the Timing

I may not know what Tomorrow holds, but I can tell you who holds tomorrow and I can tell you a little about the future …

God says In a Little while, once again …

To know about the future you need to know about the Past

To know about the future you need to know about who holds the Future

2 Tim 1:12I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day

There is a Certainty because I believe in the Person behind the promise

People, I am teaching you principles, but I am also teaching you about a Person

There is a certainty but more about that Confidence later, let’s talk about the Certainty of the Timing.

  A. In A Little While -

    1. well how certain is “in a little while” … it’s not about the word it’s about who is speaking – to a child “in a little while is a matter of seconds” – “now” … “now” … “how about now” … To a young adult, it might be days or weeks … but to one more mature, it might be much more because Time is fleeting …

    2. Who is speaking?  God is speaking.  An Eternal God is speaking.  One who has ALWAYS lived and WILL always live.  What is a day to him?  What is a thousand days, or a thousand years.  A thousand years to him is like a day or a moment.  So an eternal God says “in a little while” … so I don’t know how long that is … but it is a CERTAIN time … that means things are GOING to CHANGE … THERE IS a FUTURE hope to COME In a Little While

    3. But not only WHO is speaking in regards to time but who is speaking in Regards to Character and is he reliable.  You and I know that from our study in John that Jesus used this phrase.  In John 16 when he said “in a little while you will not see me … and then you will see me again” …

In a matter of hours Jesus was taken from them, placed on a cross, crucified, died, and was buried in a borrowed tomb.  But in a little while, 3 days later, he got UP from that tomb and they saw him again.

But then in a little while, 40 days later he stood with them on the mount of olives and he was taken up from them and as they stood staring into the skies the Angels said … “why do you stand here, this same Jesus who was taken up from you will return in the same way”

What were they saying?

“In a little while”

God says to Haggai … IN A LITTLE WHILE

That means that everything we have in THIS life is FOR A LITTLE WHILE

Whether troubles or triumphs

Whether riches or poverty

Whether sickness or health

It is FOR a little while

But IN a Little While … everything will change

In a little while, You can make it if you know what comes in a little while …

How do we know what comes in a little while … by what he has done in the past

  B. Once Again

V6 says “In a little while … once again”

If you want an idea what is in store for those who love God and are called according to his purpose … look back to look ahead

Genesis 1 says “in the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth”

Rev 21 says “Behold, I make all things new … these words are faithful and true”

In Genesis 3 man sinned and we fell from what God had created in Genesis 1.  Death entered, sin ruled

In  2 Cor 5:17 Paul says “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; old things have passed behold all things are become new”

In Revelation we find that at the end there will be a new heaven and a new earth

There is a time coming, called “A Little while” … and we can be CERTAIN

Because we look at what he HAS done

We hear what he says he WILL do and we can be certain that it may not be today and it may or may not be tomorrow but it certainly WILL happen

God CAN Rebuild your life if you will ask him and you can be CERTAIN

God says he WILL do it …

ONCE – echad /ckh-awd/ one, certain, once for all

MORE – owd /ode/ going around; still, yet, again,

You can be certain, because God will for certain, once for all, come around still yet again make all things new …

This world decays

God Renews

This world destroys

God rebuilds

This world kills

God gives life

In a little while

Oh can we pause for a minute and sing that

In a Little While

(Jim Goforth ©2008)

For a little while, for a little while this pain I’m going through

For a little while, for a little while, might seem satan’s winning too

But in a little while, in a little while, oh in a little while, he’ll split the eastern sky, to meet him I will fly, to live and never die, in a little while

For a little while, for a little while, trouble knows my name

For a little while, for a little while, seems every day’s the same

But in a little while, in a little while, oh in a little while

I’ll walk on streets of gold, I never will grow old, I will reach my goal, in a little while

For a little while, for a little while, press on to the end

For a little while for a little while, broken hearts will men

Cause in a little while in a little while, oh in a little while

My Savior’s face I’ll see, I’ll finally be free, won’t you go with me, in a little while

Certainty – in God’s Building

And secondly

2. Conclusion or Termination

John 16:20-22 – says “You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.  a woman giving birth has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy … now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.”

You have perhaps gone through struggle.

Perhaps it is your on doing.  You have made bad choices and are living with the consequences

You have planted and you are waiting for the harvest

You are at the mercy of circumstances you didn’t ask for but have come your way

We have a Certainty of Time

But what will Happen …

What will be the conclusion.

Look around, you everything you will come to an end

Look to your left and to your right every person will find this life will end

It has been appointed to man, once to die and then the judgment.

A Conclusion is coming a termination of all things.

He says Once more I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land

I will shake all nations, the silver is mine the gold is mine

God is going to shake it all

The Natural Things – heaven and earth

The National Things – the nations

The Numeral Things – the market place or material things

So what’s the point?

You and I as we build our house should not build our house on things that cannot stand … on shifting sands

The writer of Hebrews gives commentary to these verses in Hebrews 12

Hebrews 12:26-28

At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, ‘once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens’ 27 the words ‘once again’ indicate the removing of what CAN be shaken – that is, created things – so that what cannot be shaken may remain. 28 therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe 29 For our ‘God is a consuming fire.’”

We can be CONFIDENT that in a little while, THIS world will end and in a little while Christ will come again

So you better build your house on what cannot be shaken

I put my money in a bank instead of under my mattress because the words FDIC tell me that my money is secured, stable, by the government

But what if the government is shaken?

What if all the silver and gold are no more because ALL things are shaken

What happens when the Storm of God’s Judgment comes?

Jesus spoke of is

Matthew 7:24-27 everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wife man who built his house on the rock.  The rain come down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.  But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put thme into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Will your house stand?

Not unless it is built on truth of Jesus Christ

Will your house stand?

David understood it

Psalm 127:1

Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.  Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.

Men you are the watchmen of your house

Men and women you are the builders of your house …

But unless the Lord Watches … your time is wasted

The hope of the physical realms is not in Earth Day but in Repentance and turning to the Lord

Nations are made up of people. If the people who are called by his name … will humble and pray and return … then we can know blessing because Jesus still is the Answer for the World today

But can I finish

We have Certainty in the Timing

Conclusion and Termination of the Temporal

And so we have

3. Confidence and Trust

Remember what I quoted earlier …

There is a Certainty and it is in a PERSON not a process

A Person and not just a Principle but a Person … and so Paul said

2 Tim 1:12I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day

When God builds a house we can have confidence and place our TRUST in a PERSON to bring us Peace

The greatest thing that is going to be shaken … is NOT Heaven and Earth

IT is NOT Nations

It is Not Economic Strength

The greatest thing that will be Shaken for the Believer whose house the Lord builds is Sin and the Death that it Brings

What will be Shaken is our PAST …

God says the FORMER will be BLOWN away by the FUTURE GLORY

Wherever you have been

Whatever you have done

In Christ the GREATEST it YET to be

In Christ, Old Glory is Gone, New Glory has come

Old Failures are gone, New Success is coming

Old wars and destruction are gone and New Peace is Here and Available

Oh don’t you see Haggai was speaking about the Temple they were building and how it would bring them back to Peace with God … but hwe speaking of a much bigger peace as well.  He was speaking of a much greater Temple a much bigger Kingdom

A much greater opportunity

An opportunity for YOU and for Me

This wasn’t just about Judah …

Isaiah 42:6 says I, the Lord have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand.  I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles.

Isaiah 49:6 says it is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept.  I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth

This promise was for ALL who would believe

So that as John 1:12 says “to as many as received him, to those who believed in his name he gave the right to become children of God”

The confidence we have is that we can place our Trust in Christ and he builds our life into Eternal Life.

The Peace that comes is a far reaching one … it is FOR you

If you are hearing my voice don’t harden your heart, respond in faith

David said

Psalm 95

“Today, if you hears his voice, do not harden your hearts”

The writer of Hebrews quotes those verses in chapter 3 and 4

There is room for you in the building plan of God

So Haggai delivers the Word of God and this self-same promise when he describes what will give him that Great Glory that will be better than any of the past in verse 7 he says

“the desired of all nations will come and I will fill this house with GLORY”

That word desired is sometimes translated “wealth” but that’s not what God was saying … the word is chemdah /khem-dah/ meaning desirable, pleasant, or precious

Oh Precious One don’t ever think that there isn’t a place for you … because it brings God Great glory to save EVEN You!

From every Continent, from Every Country

From every Island, from every Mountain

He can take you out of the gutter or out of the boardroom

He can take you with a GED or PHD

He can take you from the playground or the polo grounds

From the white house or the white house on the corner

From the mansion or flat

From a door room or a bedroom in your parents house

From the Big House as Warden, Guard or Prisoner

Don’t you see there is PEACE available and he is calling you and me and when we come it brings HIM GLORY … a GREATER Glory than ever before

The Desired of All Nations will Come and Revelation 7:9-10 Describes that Great Glory

After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people, and language, standing before the Throne and in front of the Lamb.  They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.  And they cried out in a loud voice: ‘Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.’”

And then in verse 15-16 says they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them.  Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst.  The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water.  And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Oh the day is coming and I already know my name is written and reserved there

The Lord is building my house

The shakable things will be shaken but the Word of the Lord will Stand Forever

I am Confident and have placed my Trust

I KNOW in whom I have believed and am convinced, persuaded, satisfied, certain without a doubt, that he is ABLE to keep that which I have committed to him, my heart, my life, my future my all, against that day.

What about YOU?
