INTRO Story about sick husband a wife you said no joke... There are many things we would say we would not do.
Maybe getting up early
Doing the same thing each day
eating healthy
working out
talking to people
quit drinking coffee
But as you look at people that you want to model your life after or successful people, you will find that they do some crazy things. zThey make a habit of them too.
Jordan Peterson - Eats only steak, salt, water
Ben Franklin - 5am no matter what
Bill Gates - Dishes every night
The list could go on and on. Full of things that you would probably say "I'm not doing that"
Touch your neighbor and say "I'm not doing that"
Some of you right now in your head and with your actions said "I'm not doing that" its the small things - the "I'm not doing that' type of things that make all the difference.
We are looking at modeling and living out the love of Jesus in our everyday lives.
Jesus continually sought out people with irrational acts of service.
John 13:1–3 (ESV)
Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God,
DAY BEFORE THE CRUCIFIXION
Jesus here is sitting down with his closest followers. A time for Jesus to be with them. To fellowship.
Let's back up for a second and think about His week so far because right now its Thursday.
Monday - Cleaned out the Temple
Tuesday - Big fight with all the religious leaders
Wednesday - We don't know
Thursday - Eats with His closest followers
Friday - He dies.
So Jesus is sitting here knowing everything that has happened and everything that will happen. Eating with his closest followers, knowing He will be beaten, humiliated, and hung on a cross to die.
if you study this dinner further from all the different angles this is what you will find
Luke records in his gospel that they were arguing over who was better and who was greater among them. (Jesus already told them the greatest would be a servant)
Here in John we see that Judas is getting ready to betray him. Its a mess
As Jesus looks around that room at His closest followers the night before His death, you know what He sees? Proud hearts and dirty feet.
It was custom to have a servant or a slave to wash the feet of your guests. Kind of like taking your coat at the door. But it hadn't happened yet. So there is a bunch of guys eating food, talking about how great they are, or thinking about the future plans of betrayal. Thinking about everything but the right thing. And they all have dirty feet.
John 13:4–5 ESV
rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
JESUS WASHES FEET
Jesus was doing the lowest of the low Jobs. It was something that would have been humiliating.
The night before He is going to give His life for humanity.
He sees proud hearts, who is the greatest? and dirty feet. So he washes them.
This is like the queen of England coming to clean your toilet.
But Jesus says - Feet are dirty, I can do that.
The King of Kings, the Creator, the Redeemer He says, ill do that.
But what do we say?
I'm not going to do that.
I'm not going to talk to her, I'm not going to talk to him I'm too cool for this.
I'm not doing that. I'm too important, I'm too old, I'm too popular.
But Jesus said, ill wash those feet, of the proud followers that are so clueless as to what is coming next and what they are missing.
Instead, when we are presented with an opportunity where we say I'm not doing that, ask God, is this an assignment you are giving me right now? Am I to wash feet for you?
Give me eyes to see the opportunities that I so easily overlook. Give me a heart to care.
Some of you need to pray for that.
Some of you will call yourself a Christian but have no heart to wash feet.
Consumer Church
many times we want a church that is all about us.
I want a church that fits my needs. That is my speed. The right vibe, the right music, the right friends.
If you are a follower of Jesus, you are not a spiritual consumer but a spiritual contributor.
That means the church is not for you, you are the church.
Am I a consumer or a contributor? in my youth group? in my small group? Am I looking around at what needs to be done or who needs to be loved? or am I looking around at all the things and people that I don't really like?
I know what Jesus would do... He would See Proud Hearts and Dirty Feet.

Why Should We Wash Feet?

I'm going to let you in on a secret... When you serve others God changes lives. The first life that he changes is yours.
As we talked about yesterday, the right attitude is the first step toward the right actions.
Instead of I can't do that what about I can do that? This one is mine
Another reason why.... we find in.
Psalm 139:14 ESV
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
This passage goes on to talk about how God knows you and formed you in the whom. He made you and He knows you deeply.
Then we look at Ehp.
Ephesians 2:10 ESV
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
He has made us, knows us, and saved us to do good works.
You are not saved so that you can sit and consum, but you are saved and created so you can serve. so you can wash feet!
Walking in surender, washing feet.
Jesus washed the feet of Judas - knowing tht he would betray him.
Jesus did not just serve, Jesus was a servant.
Serving is not what I do it is who I am. I am a servant of the king.
Do we have the same heart and attitude of Jesus the washer of feet or do we say “Im not doing that”.
When I go to bed at night I want to be able to say "God used me today" But instead I will often feel empty. Because I often spend my day on myself.
I spend youthgroup and church on myself. Its about me. This trip is about me. Maybe I will serve(for me) but im not a servant.
You want a better youth group, a better church? With less drama? A better life. It requires you to be a servant.
Our group will not reach lost people until re are first servants. Do you want to change your life? - wash feet, serve Do you want to change the lives of others? - wash feet. Do you want to love like Jesus? - Wash feet.
