Stepping out of the Boat

Matthew 14:22-33

I.                   Waiting for God’s Go

A.     The Benefits of Waiting

1.      Your Strength is Renewed

Is 40:31
But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

2.      You will Never be Ashamed

Ps 25:3
Indeed, let no one who waits on You be ashamed; Let those be ashamed who deal treacherously without cause.

3.      You are a person of Integrity

Ps 25:21
Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, For I wait for You.

B.     The Example of Joshua

1.      The Time Joshua Had the Go

Battle of Jericho: Josh 6:1-5

Not only did God give the “go” but He gave explicit instructions.

2.      The Time Joshua Did Not have the Go

Battle of Ai, Josh 7 (God’s reply in 7:10-13)

C.     Encouragement

Ps 37:7

7     Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.

Ps 37:34

34     Wait on the Lord, And keep His way, And He shall exalt you to inherit the land; When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.

II.               Stepping

A.     Stepping Out of your Zone

Sometimes God asks us to do things that we may not feel prepared for.

ü  Abraham – Gn 12:1 – God hadn’t even showed him the land yet (neg)

ü  Jonah – Jh 1:1-3 – God called, Jonah didn’t want to go

B.     Stepping up to the plate

As Christians we are told to do things that we do not want to at times.

ü  Luke 17:3 – rebuke your brother if he sins

o   Lv 19:17

ü  Ep 5:11 – expose the unfruitful works of darkness

C.     Doing your Duty

ü  Lk 17:10 – we do things because that is our duty (Rm 12:2 reasonable service)

ü  1Co 9:16-17 – we do some things because it is given to us as Christians to do them, woe to us if we don’t do them, but if we do them willingly we have a reward

III.            Dealing with Doubt

A.     Remembering the Peace of God

Phil 4:6-7; Nm 6:26; Ps 85:8; Is 26:3, 12; 45:7; Lk 1:78-79 (The dayspring gives peace)

B.     Remembering the Source of our Strength

Ps 29:11; 28:8-9; 68:35; 138:3; Ep 3:16;

C.     Remembering the Source of our Defense

Ps 61:3; 91:4; 89:23-24; 144:2; Pr 18:10
