Psalm 111:10 ESV
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!

Intro:

Hyper focus on God’s Love to the exclusion.
Sayings:
it doesn’t really mean “fear” right? Maybe just a reverence.
Wasn’t that just an OT thing?

An Overview of the Fear of the Lord:

1. Jesus validates the biblical teaching of “The Fear of the Lord.” Luke 12:4-5

Luke 12:4–5 ESV
“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!
· It overpowers the fear of man… and everything else.
· The only way to overcome the fear of man is to fear God.
Illustration: Hudson loves me, and fears him.
Love and Fear of God are two sides of the same coin.

2. God is one of the only things we are instructed to fear ( 17:3, Eccl. 12:13-14)

Ecclesiastes 12:13–14 ESV
The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.
Example: Joseph - He di not want to disobey God. He was more willing to fear God and suffer the consequences of man, than to fear man and suffering the consequences from God.
Illustration: Going beyond the guardrails on a road.

3. The fear of the Lord is for our good and leads to blessing.(Pro. 19:23, 22:4)

Proverbs 19:23 ESV
The fear of the Lord leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm.
Proverbs 22:4 ESV
The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.

4. Its opposite is “perversity,” to turn away from what is right.

· Rebellion: Trouble submitting to authority.
· A Hardened Heart: God keeps speaking, but we don’t want to listen.
· Envy: You refuse to accept with gratitude what God has given you.
· Being wise in your own eyes: Tries to pull off what they can in their own wisdom. Prov. 26:12
Proverbs 26:12 ESV
Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
How much hope does the Bible give for a fool?

How the Fear of the Lord Changes Us:

1. It produces integrity and repels hypocrisy Luke 12:1-3

Luke 12:1–3 ESV
In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.
“What your mamma don’t know won’t hurt her.”
God knows.
· Live in awareness that nothing is kept secret from God (v. 3)

2. It produces boldness and repels fear Luke 12:4-5

Luke 12:4–5 ESV
“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!
Ex: Kid getting bullied on the playground… and dad shows up.
If you live in the fear of the Lord, you can trust that the Holy Spirit will empower you in the hour of need (Luke 12:12
Luke 12:12 ESV
for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
Ex: Corrie Ten Boom, in light of Dana’s sickness.
Dad saw the situation
Father sat down on the edge of the narrow bed. "Corrie," he began gently, "when you and I go to Amsterdam-when do I give you your ticket?" I sniffed a few times, considering this. "Why, just before we get on the train." "Exactly. And our wise Father in heaven knows when we're going to need things, too. Don't run out ahead of Him, Corrie. When the time comes that some of us will have to die, you will look into your heart and find the strength you need-just in time.”
We cheapen the power of that when we write off the fear of the Lord.
· Triumph over fear
· Confidence in God’s Provision
· Triumph over fear in witnessing
· Power in your hour of need

3. It produces impactfulness and repels covetousness (Luke 12:15-21)

Luke 12:15 ESV
And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
“Live for what will last.”
Ex. Parable of the farmer Luke 12:20-21
Luke 12:20–21 ESV
But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
· Leverage things that won’t last to impact the things that will last (v. 21)
Ex: Family friend who hit it big. 6 or 7 figures a year. He funds the things that will last with his money.

4. It produces faith and repels worry (Luke 12:22-31)

Luke 12:29 ESV
And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried.
· If you are seeking the priorities of God, you can have the assurance that God will provide for you as your loving Father.
The Promise Luke 12:31
Luke 12:31 ESV
Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you.
Application
Recognize that the God of the Universe is your Dad.
See how Christ feared the Father rather than man.
