Be Helpful

This morning our passage comes from Galatians 6. In the Book of Galatians, Paul writes to the churches of the region of Galatia that are being plagued by false teachers trying to get them to add works of the flesh to the gospel message of salvation by faith alone. Galatians is very much like a shortened version of Romans, where Paul is laying out the argument that we are not saved by our works, but by faith alone.

In spite of this, we find Paul arguing that even though we are saved by faith, we should do good works to one another because we are saved.

How many of you have ever needed a little help in your Christian walk. Maybe you are bogging down and wrestling with doing the things God has called you to do. You may be struggling to read your Bible or pray. You may be struggling with your attitude or something else and you just need a little help.

God has called us to help each other out in our Christian walk. We are called to walk together in faith and that’s one of the reasons we need a church family.

This season of Thanksgiving, we are going to be talking about several things we can do in light of God’s grace towards us. This morning, we are going to see the call to be helpful.

Let’s take a look at what the Bible says to us today from Galatians 6:9-10.

Galatians 6:9–10 ESV

9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

1. The Encouragement (v.9a)

9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

We are encouraged to not grow weary of doing good. We can often tire from helping other people.

Efforts go unnoticed. People seem ungrateful. We keep having to help people over and over again?

We can ask ourselves if it is worth it. We are encouraged to not grow weary.

What particular does it mean to do good. It really means to be helpful. We are specifically dealing with the context of bearing with one another’s burdens.

Galatians 6:1 ESV

1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.

Paul then continues to talk about giving and sharing with those who teach in the Lord, before turning to what we sow through good works.

2. The Reward (v.9b)

9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

There is a season for rewards just like there is a season for planting and sowing. But these rewards that we work for are not fleshly rewards, but spiritual ones.

We are not trying to gain rewards to use on ourselves. We are looking to advance the kingdom.

Most of the work in the field is not planting or harvesting, but the day to day maintenance and work of growing the harvest. It’s hard work and we can tend to give up. Most people tend to experience this frustration with growing a garden. When the work gets tough they give up and don’t get the harvest because of it.

We are encouraged to keep the reward in front of us. Keep working and being helpful and don’t grow weary.

What greater reward could we have than to see a lost soul go to heaven?

3. The Opportunity (v.10)

Look for opportunities

Serve everyone you have a chance

Especially look after those who are believers

Conclusion:

What has God helped you with? Have you experience the gift of salvation? There is not a greater gift you can receive from the Lord?

God’s grace doesn’t stop there. He has done so much for us.

He has done great things for us. Let us do great things for Him.
