Baptism: Different Family Traditions
Modern: Some sprinkle, splash, pour, pour three times, dunk. Some baptize babies; others don’t. Some believe baptism is required for salvation; others don’t.
Ancient: Baptism had to happen in a river or stream, not a pond or lake. Baptism had to be in cold water, not heated water. Some ancient churches had people get baptized naked and then gave them a white robe as they came out of the water.
Weird: 2nd Century Marcionites: If someone died without getting baptized, a living person would hide under the bed where the corpse was. They would ask the corpse if it wanted to get baptized, and the person under the bed would say, “Yes,” and then come out and get baptized on behalf of the dead person.
Personal: Do we understand what baptism is? When we get baptized, or want our kids to get baptized, do we really know what we’re doing? When Christians in some churches baptize their infants, do they understand the commitment they’re making?
Why do we get baptized? Because Jesus commanded it (Matt 28:19).

Baptism is a demonstration of true faith in Jesus (Acts 16:30-34). Baptism is an expression of genuine trust in Christ.
Explanation
The Philippian jailer demonstrated his faith in Jesus by getting baptized.
People often ask, “How do I know if my faith is genuine? How do I know if I’m really saved?” Here’s one response: “Do your actions demonstrate your faith in Jesus? Does your life show that you follow Christ?”

Application: This is why at LakeView we practice believer’s baptism rather than infant baptism.

Illustration: Whether you grew up in church or not, you reach a point where you have to decide for yourself if you are a follower of Jesus.
Application: Baptism is a rite of passage that marks a turning point in your life. Have you been baptized since you believed?
