Hot Mess
Week 2: My Schedule is a Hot Mess
Big Idea:
There are many ways to make sure you stay up to date on your daily routine or schedule.
However, no amount of fancy technology can help with a schedule that is just too full.
This week, we pull from the Bible practical steps you can take when your schedule seems like a hot mess.
Prayer: “Lord, you know my schedule… You know the needs of my life.
Please help me manage all that is before me in a healthy way that honors you and reflects you to those around me. Help me step out in faith and trust you for all my life, including the rest.”
Scripture: Genesis 2:2-3; John 5:17; Psalm 84:10; Luke 2:41-49
(All scripture is taken from the NIV unless otherwise noted)
Introduction
Good morning church.
Welcome back to another week of worship.
We are continuing our series called, “Hot Mess.”
Last week we defined what a hot mess is, but maybe this is a brand new phrase to you.
Essentially, this phrase is popular in culture to describe something (or someone) that is out of control.
Chaos is often associated with this phrase.
So, in this series, we are talking about parts of our life that fall into this category.
Last week, we spent time learning about what to do when our family is a hot mess.
Today, we are taking another step in the process, talking about our schedule, which is an area in all of our lives that gets a bit chaotic from time to time.
STORY:
Talk about how you personally keep your schedule up to date and how you manage your time.
The truth is, there is no fancy way or quick fix to deal with a schedule that is just too full.
I have lived that life, maybe some of us here today know exactly what that feels like, and it isn’t too appealing.
In fact, it’s a mess!
The reason we are talking about our schedules today is because the repercussions of a chaotic and full schedule will affect those closest to you.
They are the ones most directly impacted by your schedule and your time management/mis-management skills.
What if our discussion today and that of last Sunday were to go hand in hand?
I want to share with you a few things the Bible says to help us regain a manageable schedule, rather than one that’s a chaotic hot mess.
Main Teaching
I. Find Sabbath Rest
(Genesis 2 / Mark 2)
If you have a Bible with you today, turn with me to Genesis 2.
Last week, we covered the entire book of Genesis (or at least it felt like it), looking at the family system of the patriarchs.
Today, I want us to begin with the second chapter in the Bible, because I believe it lays the groundwork for us today.
What is the first step we can take toward reevaluating our schedule to make sure we are healthy?
Well, quite simply, we must find Sabbath rest.
Read Genesis 2:2-3
Now, if you are new to this whole church thing, this may be a new term for you.
God creates the heavens and earth in six days.
