“Faith is not credulity.
It is not believing in something you know is not true.
Neither is faith a substitute for knowledge.
Christian faith operates in the realm of meaning, not in the realm of fact.
Faith recognizes fact but it is not out to obtain, contradict, or prove facts.
Saint Augustine knew this when he said, “I believe in order that I may understand.”
~Saint Augustine
Faith is an interesting thing to say the least!
It’s something so POWERFUL as to save - yet can’t be held
It’s something so fragile as to CRACK into pieces at the slightest disturbance - yet - eternal
And so - It’s - interesting!
If we were to look at how the bible defines FAITH…we’d see this...
So FAITH...
entails - “things HOPED for”
and “things NOT SEEN”
When I was thinking through where we would stop next in our trek through this book of 1 Samuel…and what I would preach on this week...
I came to this passage in chapter 14...
…and after some study of it...
Felt like it would be worth it to camp out there - and dive in.
15 verses that highlight FAITH and its anchors...
And it all culminates in verse 6…but before we get there....
So Jonathan wanted to go over to the Garrison (Governor) of the Philistines...
Not to play cards or chit-chat...
But to overtake him...
And so Jonathan - was - - IN THE ACTION...
SAUL was - where?
Let’s look at who Saul is hanging with…IN THE OUTSKIRTS...
Ahijah…son of Ahitub (Ichabod’s brother) and (son of Phinehas who is the son of Eli the priest of the Lord in Shiloh)
Remember Ichabod?
Remember back in chapter 4 - Israel was defeated by the Philistines and the Ark was captured?
Eli’s sons were killed = and a man came to tell him
Let’s go to it...
Ichabod MEANS - “WITHOUT HONOR”
And THIS is the CLAN that Saul was hanging with in the caves...
back to our text...
Before we get to the culmination in the next verse...
Know this...
SLIDE: Anchor of Faith: Conviction of Who God Is
Anchor of Faith
v6
In reading this verse - we can see the BASIS for Jonathan’s CONFIDENCE!
it comes after the word - “FOR”...
“for…nothing can hinder the Lord from saving...”
Faith BEGINS with a conviction of who God is...
And if we look in scripture - we can find men who DIDN’T HAVE this conviction....and didn’t TRUST who God claimed to be...
God once said this to Moses...
v10 - the Command of God - the WORD of God...
v11 - Moses’ LACK of conviction about who God was
4 more times AFTER this initial hesitation - Moses WARS against God’s command...
Why? - No conviction in who God was!
That’s why God responded with this...
Do you KNOW who’s talking to you??!!
Do you even KNOW who I AM?
How about the ISRAELITES - standing in between Pharaoh’s army and the Red Sea?
They had just experienced the power of God come against Pharaoh...
AND YET -
No conviction of WHO GOD was…!
*HOW ABOUT YOU?
Good Question to Ask:
LIKE MOSES - What inadequacy of yours is keeping you from TRUSTING God - IN FAITH?
We ALL feel we have them?
lack of knowledge
lack of skill
lack of ability
lack of
Could it be that you put MORE CONVICTION in who YOU are over WHO GOD IS?
When we FAIL to follow Jesus out of the boat...
We demonstrate that our CONVICTION in who WE ARE is stronger than our CONVICTION in who GOD IS!
Another Good Question to Ask:
LIKE the ISRAELITES - What events from your past, where God no doubt MOVED in your life - are you IGNORING while you continue to NOT walk in FAITH?
The Israelites had seen God MOVE mountains for them…yet they IGNORED all of it WHILE neglecting to trust God!
Did God miraculously move in your life at one point in time - regarding...
your finances?
a relationship?
your job?
your family?
your church?
your health?
What events are we ignoring / or have forgotten?
They’re MEANT to embolden us - to INCREASE our faith!!
So NOT ONLY is CONVICTION in WHO GOD IS - an ANCHOR of Faith - meant to EMBOLDEN us…but...
What else can we see from our text…today?
We’re going to see this in our text...
SLIDE: Anchor of Faith: Expectation of What God Can Do
Anchor of Faith
So - CONVICTION of who God IS...
NOW - Expectation of what God can do!
Back to v6
The NASB version of the Bible renders the phrase...
“PERHAPS the Lord will work for us”
Now think about that - THIS is FAITH!
Does Jonathan sound CONFIDENT that the Lord will help them CONQUER the garrison and WIN?
NO - he’s NOT confident in the immediate VICTORY...
Now some people would say - Well then THAT’S NOT FAITH!
“Faith is ALWAYS confident!!!”
The answer to THAT is - - YES, Faith IS always confident - but NOT in the IMMEDIATE victory!
It’s CONFIDENT in SOMETHING ELSE - something BETTER!!
What is Jonathan saying here??
“Perhaps the Lord will work for us”
He’s saying -
