a. Refreshment following in the Lobby
When I met Marlys, she and Erwin were newlyweds. Marlys was a giddy bride. It was wonderful for Julie and me as pastors of a congregation who was mostly older than ush to have a couple who were married for fewer years than us. We told Erwin and Marlys if they needed any marriage counseling, we could help them out.
Marlys will remain in my mind as a new bride.
Erwin, Marlys really loved you. I know that you loved her and cared for her.
On our wedding day, we make vows promising that we will remain faithful “in sickness and in health, for better or worse, until parted by death.”
Erwin, you have faithfully fulfilled your vows.
The loss, grief, and sorrow that you feel today is a sign of the great love you have had for Marlys.
It is completely normal to feel the full range of emotions from denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
Even Jesus wept at the loss of his friend Lazarus even though he knew Lazarus would be raised from the dead.
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, Godcreated the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 50:26 So Joseph died, being 110 years old. They embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
The word “coffin” simply means a box or a chest.
The word is used for money chests and even the Ark of the Covenant in which the Ten Commandments were stored.
The word connotes a place in which we place our valuables.
As we think of how this relates to Marlys, we might think of a hope chest in which a woman places prized possessions that she will use in her married life.
The Bible often compares the return of the Lord to a Jewish wedding.
Matthew 22:1 And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying,
Matthew 22:2 “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son,
Once a Jewish couple were betrothed for marriage, the prospective groom would return to his father’s house to build an addition on to the family home to which he could bring his bride to live with him.
John 14:1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.
John 14:2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
The bride did not know how long it will take for her groom to complete the work on the house, so she had to live in constant readiness of his return.
Matthew 25:6 But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’
Matthew 25:13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.
The vessel that holds the remains of Marlys is not a coffin or an urn – it’s a hope chest.
Marlys had placed her faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior; she had made arrangement for her wedding day.
Genesis 50:24 And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will visit you and bring you up out of this land to the land that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”
Genesis 50:25 Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.”
1 Thessalonians 4:13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.
1 Thessalonians 4:14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
1 Thessalonians 4:15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.
1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
1 Thessalonians 4:18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
We place our precious Marlys in a hope chest and await the Marriage Feast of the Lamb.
Revelation 19:7 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready;
Revelation 19:8 it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
Revelation 19:9 And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
You and I are invited to the Marriage Feast of the Lamb by placing our faith and trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
2 Corinthians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
2 Corinthians 1:4 who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
