Advent Story is not a story of hope. It is hope.” — Craig D. Lounsbrough
We consider Advent as the encounter, the great encounter, the historical encounter, the decisive encounter, between God and us. He who has faith, Advent looks back upon Jesus’s coming in celebration while at the same time looking forward in eager anticipation to the coming of Jesus as King of Kings! — Pope Paul VI
Advent looks back upon Jesus coming in celebration at a dusty cave, in a hayfilled feeding trough while at the same time looking forward in eager anticipation to the coming of His kingdom when he returns for his people.
Where do we begin? An unknown follower being called by the Lord Almighty to a foreign land, that’s the story of Abraham, or a member of Pharaoh’s court, kicked out and wondering in a wilderness hearing a voice from an unconsumed fire-drenched bush, in which he hears his name called twice “Moses, Moses,” stand barefooted I am is speaking, or do we go to Joshua, or the Judges, or the Kings, Isaiah the prophet starts here…
I. Royally descended, “a rod out of the stem of Jesse,” Jesse, A simple farmer on the hills of Bethlehem, and yet a father of a king. Not an accident. A foreknown plan, in whom sprang David, Solomon, Hezekiah, Josiah, and a long line of kings.
a. 2 Samuel 7:16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me[b]; your throne will be established forever.’” becoming merely a house of Jesse once more—assured that in His own time God would again raise it up to glory
b. It is always well when our hopes rest upon the Word of God.
II. Royally Gifted; 7 attributes
a. Proverbs 4:7 “Wisdom is the Principle thing, get wisdom, and when you get wisdom get understanding.”
b. Wherever you find a wise word you see the Spirit of God
c. Two pairs
Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding ( Intellectual and Practical)
Spirit of Counsel and Might ( Making the right decision, and the power to carry them out.)
Spirit of knowledge and Reverence ( Fellowship of love, always with an attitude of a Servant)
c. Menorah picture of the 7 Spirit of God.
Rev 4:5 Passion Translation And pulsing from the throne were blinding flashes of lightning, crashes of thunder, and voices. And burning before the throne are seven blazing torches, which represent the seven Spirits of God. 6 And in front of the throne there was pavement like a crystal sea of glass.
III. He saw also THE KINGDOM.
a. Now that's what we are praying for when we pray, "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven" ( Matthew 6:10 ).
b. You see, you do not see the earth today as God created it, as God intended it. You see the earth as it is suffering as the result of man's choices, man’s vices, man’s blemishes, man’s selfishness, man’s materialistic Ness,
c. It’s a gracious mystery… that when man is right with God, the animals will be right with man; when man is right with God, the earth will be right with man, man is right with our God there will not be any harm on God’s holy mountain.
e. We should recognize and rejoice that in these days even as we see things crumble, that it’s the dawning of the day of Isaiah’s vision quoted Matthew 13:16 “But Blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.”
f. So the one at the well at noon says "Come and meet a man who told me everything I've ever done." Oh man, Of course, was that what attracted Nathanael to the Nazarene? "Wow, behold an Israelite in whom there is no guile." He said, "How did you know me?" He said, "Well when you were over there sitting under the fig tree I saw you." "Oh, truly You are the Messiah, the Son of God."
g. And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for a sign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious ( Isaiah 11:10 ).
h. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left ( Isaiah 11:11 ),
i. Remnant, 22,000 people left Israel last year and moved to other parts of the world because of the difficulty of living there under these trying conditions. So God will gather them the second time. When? When Jesus Christ comes again. Then He's going to gather together His elect from the four corners of the earth.
One of the essential ironies of Advent: is that while we wait for God, we are with Him all along, that while we need to be reassured of God in a dusty cave, lying in a feed trough, we are already at home as we trust. While we wait, we have to trust, to have faith, but it is God’s grace that gives us that faith. Michelle Blake says “The mind can’t grasp a paradox; it is the knowledge of the soul.” ― Michelle Blake
