Introduction

I wish to begin this message with the our scripture reading, which will serve as the conclusion to this message.
Our focus is on the encounter Jesus has with the apostle Peter after his resurrection as described in John 21

“It’s The Lord”

John 21:7 (ESV)
7 That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.
At the height of his discipleship Peter walked on water by faith, now he can only wade through the water a symbol of how far spiritually he had fallen.
How many of you are like Peter, wading through whatever life throws at us...

“I Haven’t Changed”

John 21:8–10 (ESV)
8 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off. 9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.”
Jesus had to repeat the miracle of the fishes [Luke 5:4] to remind the disciples that he’s still the same: “I’m still the Son of God”
Death has not diluted my power
Communion is Jesus’ reminder that although He’s in heaven, His power remains undiluted...

“This is Awkward”

John 21:12–14 (ESV)
12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
What do you do when confronted by the person you betrayed?
Imagine the awkwardness...
Apprentice Reality TV… “Peter you’re fired!”

“Do You Love Me”

John 21:15–17 (ESV)
15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
There’s a lot of theology in this interaction
But the bottomline:
is that Peter messed up, but Jesus gave him another chance
Peter denied Jesus, but instead of been shown the exit door and humiliated, he was welcomed, forgiven and loved.

Conclusion

Are you wading in the water?
A spiritual low point right now?
Philippians 2:7 (NLT)
7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form,
When I read that verse be sure Jesus knows your pain
Like Peter you have messed up, you’re broken and you’ve lost sight of your mission
Jesus doesn’t say “You’re fired!” He sit down with you...

““Communion is a reminder of Jesus’ humanness and His understanding, in real time, our own fragile human nature. Communion is His way of saying ’I know and feel your pain—come into my rest.’”
