Isaiahs Messiah

John 12:41

Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him.

Isaiah – the great prophet of God - 

1. 700’s - 

a.  Calling Judah back to God –

b. Warning of judgment to come for Israel (north) and nations..

1. Assyria – the instrument of God’s judgment ..

2. Babylon – will then come upon Judah  (606) … 

3. Return – and restoration…

c. Coming of the Messiah –

1. some 55 quotes / illusions in the NT

2. This the GREAT event to come.. 

2.  Babylonian return ..   536..

a. returned – both Israel and Judah – one nation

b. rebuilt city & temple - 

c. no more idolatry –

d. BUT – also no more ‘king’ …  waiting for the Great King –

3.  Problems in understanding

a. Many – ignore the history of such ‘return’ passages… 

1. Political – from Babylon – fulfilled

2. under Messiah – a spiritual return –

b. Many ‘prophecies’ are fulfilled in ‘typical’ ways –

1.  the rejection –

c. Most today misunderstand Israel – the tool to bring the Messiah.

1. eternal purpose – redemption in Jesus for ALL PEOPLE

2. National – becomes universal –

3. temporal blessings – become eternal.. 

4. Messiah – the great King

a. Ch. 2 -  God’s mountain – all nations – peace within

b. Ch. 7 – Virgin shall conceive …

1. Matt. 1:

c. Ch. 9 – unto us a Child is born –

1. Galilee 1st see light –

2.  6-7 – the exalted ruler …  

d. Ch. 11 --  root of Jesse – the righteous Branch…

1. David’s family – restored to prominence –

2. Righteousness / godliness /

3. Peace --

e. Ch. 40 – the forerunner of time of comfort –

f. Ch. 53 – death of the Redeemer –

g. Ch. 55 – the coming of David and the New covenant … 

The Messiah has come –

Universal salvation has been provided for –

Do not reject this ….

Mountain of the Lord’s house –

All nations –

All taught of God …

PEACE within God’s house

Judah to continue ? – ask for a SIGN (refused)..  sign given to ‘Israel’ – ‘ye – plural’ –

Born of a virgin –

Immanuel -  GOD with us –

Isa. 9

Galilee the 1st to see the light --  1-3

Unto us a child is born – 6-7

Isa. 11

Shoot from stump of jesse

The BRANCH –

Spirit upon him -- 

Wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and FEAR of LORD

Righteous judgment –

Equity for the ‘meek’ –

Rod of mouth – breath of lips – slay the wicked –

Righteousness and Faithfulness

Peace ..6-9

Gentiles accepted -  10

Remnant recovered – 11

Isa. 40

Comfort – comfort –

Iniquity pardoned –

Way of the LORD prepared – a voice crying in the wilderness

Isa. 53 -  the dying Savior

1 – who has believed our report -  Jn. 12:38;  Rom. 10:16

2 – no beauty to be desired …

3.  despised – rejected

4.  ‘esteemed’ – smitten by God

5.  died for OUR transgression / sins –  [cp. 8, 11, 12]

6.  lamb of God –

6.  opened not his mouth –

7. grave with wicked / rich –

8.  YET – would prosper, see ‘his offspring’, prolong his days !

Acts 8:

3.  everlasting covenant – sure mercies of David

4.  a leader, commander for the people

7. – ‘forsake sinful ways’ – return to the LORD
