INTRODUCTION:

1. Today, we are going to start our sermons on "Lessons from Lyrics," and we need to remember the seven requirements of properly singing to God.

A. The seven requirements are:

1. We let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly.
2. We teach one another by speaking to one another.
3. We admonish one another by speaking to one another.
4. We allow grace to fill our hearts by making melody in our hearts to the Lord.
5. We give thanks to God by our songs, doing everything in Jesus' name.
6. We offer sacrifice to God through Jesus by the fruit of our lips--singing.
7. Lastly, we are to sing cheerfully or happily to God.

B. With these requirements in mind, let us consider the song "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less" to see if it fulfills all of God's requirements to be a Scriptural song.

1. We are not going to consider these steps in the sermon.

2. We are going to look at the lyrics and what the song teaches and then compare it to Scripture and what Scripture teaches.

3. Finally, I am not going to make a decision in the sermon as to whether or not the song should be sung in our worship, because that is not entirely up to me as the preacher but to the congregation and the men.

A. I trust the congregation and the men, of which I am a part, not as the minister but as a member of this congregation, to make proper decisions based on God's Word to govern this congregation and the songs we sing.
B. As the minister, it is my job to proclaim God's Word to the best of my ability; it is then up to the men to make changes in our worship, if any change is necessary as God's Word deems.

4. Remember, I am just a man doing my best to interpret what the song writer is trying to say in the song and then match it to Scripture.

A. I want to STRESS, I am FALLIBLE!!!
B. I also want to STRESS that my door is always open. Come and discuss it with me if there is any disagreement and remember, I am not making any decisions as to which songs we are going to sing or not.
C. I would simply like to start the conversation.

BODY:

1. "MY HOPE IS BUILT ON NOTHING LESS THAN JESUS' BLOOD AND RIGHTEOUSNESS."

Romans 5:1–6 NKJV
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

A. We are not born with hope built-in, but we must build our hope.

Colossians 2:6–7 NKJV
6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

1. In order to build our hope, we must establish our faith in Christ .

Ephesians 6:4 NKJV
And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.

A. We have to build or establish faith in our children to build hope in them, but we must remember to not stop this same process in ourselves as well.

2. How do we continue to build or establish faith in ourselves so that hope will abound in us?

2 Peter 1:5–8 NKJV
5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

A. If we want to be rooted and built-up in Christ so that we can be established in the faith, having hope abound in our lives, we must add these Christian graces to our lives.

1. virtue
2. knowledge
3. self-control
4. perseverance
5. godliness
6. brotherly kindness
7. love

B. The foundation of our hope should be nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness.

1 John 3:5–7 NKJV
5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. 6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.
Ephesians 1:7–10 NKJV
7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him.

1. If we trust in anything less than Jesus, it will fail us and hope will be lost.

Acts 4:11–12 NKJV
11 This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

A. If we reject Jesus, nothing else saves; therefore, hope is lost.

Hebrews 6:4–6 NKJV
4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.

2. "I DARE NOT TRUST THE SWEETEST FRAME, BUT WHOLLY LEAN ON JESUS' NAME."

1 John 2:15–17 NKJV
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

A. To trust in the sweetest frame is to trust in the world because of its sweetness.

James 1:14–15 NKJV
14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

1. The writer of this song says, "I dare not."

A. When we were young, I bet we all heard the words "I dare you" and even though sometimes we knew better, we would take them up on that dare.

1. We would receive the wages of that dare and if it was something that we knew we should not be doing, those wages were negative and I would almost bet most of the time, we wish we would have said, "I dare not."
2. The writer said this because he knew better, but sometimes we trust the world and it bites us.
1 Peter 5:8 NKJV
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
3. The bite of this lion is certain death.
Romans 6:23 NKJV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
4. If we take this dare, we will receive its wages.
2 Peter 2:12–13 NKJV
12 But these, like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed, speak evil of the things they do not understand, and will utterly perish in their own corruption, 13 and will receive the wages of unrighteousness, as those who count it pleasure to carouse in the daytime. They are spots and blemishes, carousing in their own deceptions while they feast with you,

B. We must wholly lean on Jesus.

Proverbs 3:5–7 NKJV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil.

1. The way we accomplish leaning on Jesus is realizing we can do nothing on our own.

John 15:5 NKJV
5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

2. But when we lean upon Jesus, all things are possible.

Philippians 4:13 NKJV
13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

CONCLUSION:

1. "On Christ the Solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand."

2. I challenge you today to study the songs you sing and compare them to God's Word so that their meaning can truly stand out and make your worship more meaningful and pleasing to the Almighty.
