Matthew 1:18–25 ESV
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
Matthew 1:21 ESV
21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

Gen 3.6 = Sin entered into the world
Rom 5.12 “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—”
James 1:14–15 “14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”
Start of sin was not only the garden but in our hearts
Like the ancient myth of pandora, once it it out you cannot put it back in
the start of sin is not the end of sin
The Separation of sin
Gen 3.24 = driven out of the garden
Rom 3.10-12 “as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.””
Eze 18.4 “4 Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins shall die.”
separation from one another
separation from God in this life
separation from God in the life to come
Eze 18.20 “20 The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.”
2 Thes 1.9 “9 They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,”
The Sorrow of sin
Gen 4.13 = Cain - punishment is greater than can bear
Ps 31.10 “For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones waste away.”
Gal 6.8 “8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.”
The deceitfulness of sin
Satan came to kill and steal but Jesus came to have life in abundance
True pleasures are only found in the LORD

Matt 23.26 “26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.”
Ps 51.2 “2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!”
