Advent 1: The Promise of Jesus is Our Hope

Isaiah 9:2 NIV84
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.
Isaiah 9:6–7 NASB95
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.
Come Thou Long Expected Jesus and Light Of The World.

Advent 2: Resting in Jesus is Our Peace!

Psalm 46:8–11 NIV84
Come and see the works of the Lord, the desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the shields with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
Mark 4:39 ESV
And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
Jesus and Here I Am to Worship.

Advent 3: The Light of Jesus is Our Joy

Luke 2:8–14 NIV84
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”
Now let’s sing: Joy Has Dawned, O Come All Ye Faithful, and Angel’s We Have Heard On High

‌Advent 4: Jesus is Our Love Come Down

John 1:14 NASB95
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:17–18 NASB95
For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
Hark the Herald Angel Sing!

The Christ Candle:

1 John 4:9–10 NIV84
This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Away In A Manger and What Child Is This?

I Mean To Give Him The Same Chance Every Year! (Isaiah 9:1-7)

The Promise: There Will Be No More Gloom!

People in anguish
hemmed in creating compulsion or forced behavior
what do you feel enslaved to?
Contempt
cursed - specifically the land, but includes the people and a reference to the Assyrian invasion.
punishment for disobedience
ever felt cursed?
later it will be made glorious - given honor
The People Who Walk In Darkness Will See A Great Light
In the beginning - darkness covered the face of the deep, and He said, “Let there be light.”
Those Who Live In A Dark Land The Light Will Shine On Them.
“dark land” - shadow of death...
Psalm 23:4 NASB95
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
It’s a shadow because a cloud is in between you and the sun.
God’s going to part the cloud and shine His light on you.
John 8:12 NASB95
Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
Promise...Fulfilled by Jesus

The Promise: The Nation Will Multiply

Nation - God’s people
Gladness Increased
in God’s presence
Prosperity
as with joy over the harvest - farmer
as when rejoicing Over The Dividing Of Spoils - soldier
John 10:10 NASB95
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
Truth is I don’t always feel that abundant life, now. But...
Promise…Fulfilled by Jesus AND WILL BE FULFILLED by Jesus

The Promise: The yoke on their shoulders will be Broken

Yoke/Burden - slavery/hardship
Matthew 11:28–30 NASB95
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Oppression - crushed/bruised - connected to “bind up the broken hearted” in Isaiah 61:1
Luke 4:17–19 NASB95
And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”
Promise…Fulfilled by Jesus
The Day Of Midian’s Defeat
Gideon - past allusion - large enemy for both; giving of a sign-fleece/virgin with child; small army/small child; angel appearance in both; miraculous salvation/miraculous birth
Assyria - the immediate threat - Isaiah 8:7-8
Egypt - the basis of comparison - because of word choice - yoke, burden, shoulders, and oppressors, Egypt automatically comes to the Hebrew mind.
Boots/cloaks fuel for the fire - done, defeated
Midian’s defeat tied into making Zebulun and Naphtali glorious.
Matthew 4:12–17 NASB95
Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light, And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, Upon them a Light dawned.” From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Promise…Fulfilled by Jesus

The Promise/Sign: A Child Will Be Born For Us

For…all of this is only possible because...
Isaiah 7:14 NASB95
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.
Matthew 1:21–23 NASB95
“She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
Promise…Fulfilled by Jesus
The Government will rest on His shoulders
vs. yoke on ours
His name will be called - these 4 titles
Wonderful Counselor - divine wisdom
exceptional/extraordinary
supernatural/miraculous
Counselor - based on truth and righteousness
John 14:6 NASB95
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
Mighty God - divine power
He is able to accomplish what He decrees. If He says He will do it, it will be done.
The mighty, mighty one, the God of gods, the Lord of lords, King of kings.
nuance of hero
Revelation 19:16 NASB95
And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
Eternal Father
human fatherly care and concern
in place - God’s dwelling
in duration - never cease
in quality - benevolence bestowing respect and honor
Prince of Peace
the noun is always used of human leaders/royalty
God would accomplish this through a human.
Four terms taken together give us the one who is Fully human and fully divine.
the unique, wise and powerful God/Man who cares for his subjects, sets them free, and allows them to live in peace
He sets them free from being harrassed, distressed, dispirited, thrown down again and again, scattered, thrown aside.
Matthew 9:36 NASB95
Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd.
Promise…Fulfilled by Jesus

The Promise: No End To The Increase Of His Government

increase
greater in scope than even the Davidic kingdom
consume all
over all
never decline
of peace
of righteousness
of justice
On the throne of David - over his kingdom - fulfilling God’s promise to David the Davidic covenant.
Established and upheld
justice
righteousness
forever
Isaiah 11:1–5 NASB95
Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And He will delight in the fear of the Lord, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make a decision by what His ears hear; But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked. Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist.
Promise…WILL BE FULFILLED by Jesus!

The Promise: The Zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this

Promise…WILL BE FULFILLED by Jesus!
Someday, it will be time to fulfill these promises completely.
His day of justice and righteousness will arrive, which includes the punishment of the wicked and unbelievers.
But once that final day of reckoning comes, there will be no end to the increase of His government and peace.
When that final day of rest and peace comes, and Midian’s boots and war tunics are being burned as fuel for the fire, we will experience another promise fulfilled.
Isaiah 2:4 NASB95
And He will judge between the nations, And will render decisions for many peoples; And they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they learn war.
No more Russia. No more North Korean threats. No more Chinese spy ware. No more Wuhan labs. No more Iran or the Taliban. No more need for a military presence anywhere. Never again will we need to train for war.
We saw a glimmer of this in 1914. The Christmas Truce.
Some 2/3 of troops, about 100,000 people are believed to have participated in the legendary truce.
Most accounts suggest the truce began with carol singing from the trenches on Christmas Eve, “a beautiful moonlit night, frost on the ground, white almost everywhere”...
One veteran from the Fifth Batallion the Black Watch, Alfred Anderson, later recalled, “It was a short peace in a terrible war.”
Show re-enactment from the skit guys.
One of the stories mentions Silent Night as the song sung by both sides, which whether true or not, would be the most appropriate, yet incredibly ironic, of all Christmas hymns to be sung.
“To sleep in Heavenly peace in the midst of a war.”
To celebrate Jesus who died to set men free are now at war with each other.
Loves pure light shining on those hating on each other.
And yet, this highlights my point. Someday living in heavenly peace where war will be no more and the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace will reign supreme and there will be no end to the increase of His government or peace.

I Mean To Give Him The Same Chance Every Year!

But until the fulfillment of these promises. God will continue to give you the same chance year after year after year.
2 Peter 3:9 NASB95
The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
Revelation 3:20 NASB95
‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.
Every year we celebrate the birth of Christ as a reminder that Jesus is the promise kept. And every year it is a cry from God: I will give you the same chance every year - believe in my Son, Jesus, and have an eternal life of peace, prosperity, and joy.
Maranatha, Come quickly Lord Jesus!
Closing Song: Silent Night
