UW: Reminders
Intro.: [AGS]: Different philosophies seem prevalent in our society today: individualism- I live for me; materialism: I live for my things; Secularism: I live for things separate of religious affiliation; Relativism: I live for what feels right for me. At the heart of each of these dangerous philosophies is this question: What is my source of truth? [TS]: The Word of God claims that it is inspired by God and beneficial for people. It also claims within it that it is truth (Jn. 17:17) The believer should faithfully trust in the Word of God as a guide to provide instruction and help in navigating life. [RS]: Each of us must determine for ourself our source of truth. There are different opinions that are popular in our culture, but for the Believer, there is only one that should be of focus: the Word of God. We should trust it. Perhaps, today, you need to be reminded of a few things pertaining to you and the Word of God in order to renew your trust in it. After all, we must keep the main things the main things if we are to truly live the way God desires us to live.
TS: Let us examine together a few reminders present in the verses chosen for today.
We need to be reminded of our own background. (vv. 14-15)
The text records Paul reminding Timothy of his background and how the Word of God and faith was passed on to him. He specifically detailed that he could rely upon that because he knew those who passed it on to him.
What about you? Do you remember, distinctly, who passed on the Word of God to you? (i.e., instilled knowledge and modeled trust in the Word?)
We need to be reminded of the sufficiency of Scripture. (v. 16)
Scripture is sufficient and trustworthy because it is inspired by God. Every word is inspired by God- not just the ideas; God didn’t dictate it; He inspired it, through human personality.
Specifically, it is sufficient for these things: teaching; rebuking; correcting; and training in righteousness.
It alone is sufficient to deal with any issue you encounter in life.
What about you? Have you trusted in the sufficiency of Scripture to help you address issues in your life?
We need to be reminded of the purpose of Scripture. (v. 17)
Specifically, it is recorded that the purpose of Scripture is to equip people for every good work.
The purpose is to grow us, transform us, and equip us to serve.
What about you? Have you allowed the Word of God to equip you, or have you relied on some other source? “We should unpack the Word of God; then we should allow the Word of God to unpack us.”
CONCLUSION:
[1] It is important for the year 2023 that we keep the main things the main things. We should trust in the Word of God as the sufficient source of truth to guide us throughout life, equipping us to navigate the different situations in life in a manner that glorifies our Father and grows us in His likeness.
[2] What needs to change for you to be able to truly trust in the Word of God? Rid yourself of doubt? Have questions answered? Turn to the Word instead of the world?
