Matthew 28:16–20 ESV
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Intro:

ask questions regarding what we learned in the last few months regarding what i means to know God
ask students why we think other people should know God
pray and get into the topic of knowing God.

All authority: Matt 28:18

As Jesus is going away he make a decleration that he as all the authority on heaven and earth.
So what does this authority mean? John piper suggest thats this mean
Sermons from John Piper (1980–1989) Go and Make Disciples, Baptizing Them …

“Authority” means the right and power to do something. So Jesus means that he has absolute right and all power to do as he pleases in heaven and on earth. There is no authority in heaven which can call the will of Jesus into question, and there is no authority on earth that can call the will of Jesus into question. And no power on earth or in heaven can frustrate his will when he exerts all his power to achieve it. “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

In this we can see that there is no one like Jesus he is above all he is King of Kings. he has fullfilled the prophecies that were spoken about him.
Isaiah 9:6-7 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.”
Jesus is all of the things he said he would be and with that we see his divine authority in through and as the person of Christ?
With out jesus having this authority how could we as his followers confidently do the later part of this text… we cant. with Jesus’s authroity we can confidently go forth making disciples. If he didnt have the authority we have no right to go forward and share the God news of a risen saviour. however since Jesus came died and rose from the dead we have the authority to make disciples, share the Gospel,

Invite and command Matt 28:19-20

In this text we see jesus comanding his disciples who he has known for years now who he had taught many things to do to go share all that he has done and who he is.
this later part of the text has a invite that if im honest is a command.
the disciples knew God. now it was time to make God known
Matthew 28:19–20 ESV
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
When we know God we are commanded by Jesus to go forth and making disciples
It is the will of God for your life that we share the Gosepl. the disciples were a variety of skill and people: politcal leaders, tax collectors, fisherman, missionaires and other Jobs. in fact the bible docent even mention the careers of some meaning they just were your average guys doing un remarkable things
What does making disicples look like in downtown Vancouver
in every circumstance where jesus calls a disciple he docent sit down and make a long decleration and explanation he calls them to follow him.
Paul calls believers 1 Cor 11:1 “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.”
when we are making disciples we are calling them to follow us and see what we believe how we act and what we do. we are to imitate paul and Paul follows christ which makes.
this is what the text calls living a life worthy of the Gospel. Phil 1:27 “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,”

Comfort

after the declaration and command we have a promise.
Matt 28:20 “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.””
the last words in Matthew’s Gosepl is a decleration that Jesus will be with us. he is with us now, then and forever. he will never leave you or forsake you
who thinks that this is good news?
