Key Text: Luke 9:28-36
Now it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening. And behold, two men talked with Him, who were Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. But Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep; and when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who stood with Him. Then it happened, as they were parting from Him, that Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were fearful as they entered the cloud. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!” When the voice had ceased, Jesus was found alone. But they kept quiet, and told no one in those days any of the things they had seen.
While sleep could be a good thing , when done at the wrong place and time could not only be dangerous and extremely risky.
One primary reason why the church is not effective is because it is sleepy.
Lets take a closer look at our text again
Jesus only took a handful of people with Him and not the crowd so that they can witness is Glory.
Don’t be fouled main stream culture is not the way to God remember Matt 7:13-14
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
Their association alone did not guarantee an encounter with God
They were about to miss the glory because they were asleep
Not until they were fully awake did they see His Glory. A lot of times you don’t sense the presence of God not because He is not there but because we are too deep in sleep and in sensitive to the person of the Holy spirit.
5 Characteristics of a sleepy believer
Inability to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.
Unwillingness to act or stand for righteousness. What people think about you is more important than what God want.
Unfruitful and unproductive, when was the last time you saved a soul from the pit of Hell. This is also manifested in idleness no motivation to be life and part of the soul of the church to work for His Kingdom.
Lack of hunger and motivation to hear or read the word of God.
Prayerlessness
(for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.
Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour?
Then she lulled him to sleep on her knees, and called for a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him.
Prayer
Unto You I lift up my eyes, O You who dwell in the heavens. Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, So our eyes look to the Lord our God, Until He has mercy on us. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us! For we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
