Scripture

Revelation 5:1-10. Jesus will unfold history to its logical end!

Story

In the turbulent days of the French Revolution, a political revolutionary stormed the Bastille (bas-tee-yuh) in Paris, seeking to remove every vestige of law and order from the eyes of his countrymen. He scaled the Cathedral of Notre Dame and tore down the cross from atop its spire, dashing it into pieces on the ground below. The cross, representing the authority of God, lay demolished on the ground for everyone to see. Turning to a poor peasant, the revolter boasted, “We are going to pull down all that reminds you of God!” But from the crowd came the challenging reply, “Citizen, then you might as well pull down the stars themselves!”

Setting/Context of Psalms 2.

The ongoing rebellion of a lost world against God is the setting of Psalms 2. David being the author. The Psalms looks ahead to the future when Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ will appear on the stage in human history.
Acts 4:25–26 ESV
25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, “ ‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? 26 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’—
Acts 13:33 ESV
33 this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm, “ ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you.’
Hebrews 1:5 ESV
5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”? Or again, “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son”?
Hebrews 5:5 ESV
5 So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”;
Revelation 2:26–27 ESV
26 The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father.
Revelation 12:5 ESV
5 She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne,
Revelation 19:15 ESV
15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.
An assault on God ultimately is an assault on Christ who is God’s King whom will reign with great authority over the earth, yet all attempts will end in failure.

Summary of Psalms 2.

God himself has established His Son Jesus Christ the Lord as the ruling authority over all, in spite of the repeated attempts of man, who constantly resists God’s kingdom, God invites these sinners to come and embrace Christ now before it is too late.

Searching Question within Psalms 2.

Seeing the obvious opposition to God which exists in our culture, what is to be the Christians response to this? The cause of Christ appears to be loosing ground rather than gaining ground, things are not so obvious. Living in a world that openly opposes God in big and small ways, what should be the Christians and the Churches attitude? Do you ever wonder is God going to do anything about it?
Our approach, attitude, and our assessment cannot and must not be left to speculation, but rest upon certainties. Not fictitious solutions, but factual absolutes. God has powerfully and decisively set Jesus on the throne to ultimately end all of the world’s open and foolish attempts at coming against God. God has never permitted it, and He will not permit it to go on now or forever.
The contrast, the division, the two groups that make up the world continues to be the focus of Psalms 2; the righteous and the wicked. Psalms 1:1 Blessed is the Man! And Psalms 2:12 Blessed are all! These book ends signify a continual topic of discussion and should be red together.
Psalms 1:1 the counsel of the wicked, the way of sinners, and the seat of scoffers, in Psalms 2 come into a more detailed focus. It goes more deeper than mere following the crowd in a sinful lifestyle, it is an all out assault on God.

Scheme of Psalms 2.

To convince us how foolish and futile it is to fight against God. For Christians, this is a message of hope and encouragement. The world is lined up against God, every person must decide to bend the knee to Christ, honor Him, embrace Him, and side with Him.

Supposition of Psalms 2.

Four voices are heard in Psalms 2; 1.) The voice of world. 2.) The voice of God. 3.) The voice of Christ. 4.) The voice of the Spirit.

Study Outline to Psalms 2.

I. A Seditious Society: Rebellion/Revolt, Psalms 2:1-3.

The human race is united in its rebellion against God’s rule, a revolt that was climaxed at Christ’s first coming, and will culminate at His second coming when all stupid attempts of man to eradicate God will not end well at all for the rioting mobs of our world.
Perplexing question, Psalms 2:1. Creation has taken up arms against its Creator. What foolishness, yet what confusion; Why? What has God done, what has Jesus done, that each deserves such animosity, anger, antagonism, such arrogance. The Psalmist is furious over the open attack coming against His God!
Premeditated crime against God. A crime of purpose, Psalms 1:1. “Plot,” or “imagine,” (KJV) same word as in Psalms 1:2, the godly man meditates on the things of God, the ungodly or godless nations and people think of ways to get rid of God.
Psalms 2:33 Let us break their bonds asunder, And cast away their cords from us.”
Politicians, people, the popular votes and propaganda. This is a grassroots movement. With so many differences which exist in the world; political differences, religious differences, social differences, moral differences, they are united on one thing, everything that has to do with God, they want it gone! “Set,” literally means, “to take one’s stand,” the nations, their leaders, the common people have taken a position against God, they’ve had enough they want God gone!
Permitted to do what they want, when they want, how they want. New morality, which openly opposes God’s moral standard. Atheistic propaganda flooding the media and social media, if societal and culture acceptance, majority rules; desensitizing through media sources, pumping into our homes as if it is “normal”, never showing the underlying dangers. Atheistic communism, humanism, secularism. Godless ideologies and theories. They hate God, they hate His truth, they hate Jesus, they hate God’s people, they want the restraints imposed by God and His truth, removed, moral and ethical parameters, erased. Aggravated infuriating to the fallen nature of humanity. IT’S A WORLD AGAINST GOD!
Promised lie of Satan.
Genesis 3:4–5 ESV
4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

II. Scoffing Sovereign: Reaction, Psalms 2:4-6.

God remains the unrivaled sovereign, without being affected by the foolish and sinful revolt against heaven. God laughs at man’s ridiculous attempt to stop God and His divine purpose.
Calm reaction to the world’s efforts to eradicate God, Psalms 2:4, “sits,” God is not intimidated by the threats. He is composed in spite of humanities conspiring. God is unrivaled, unequaled, unmatched, unparalleled. God is supreme, unbeaten, unmoved.
Contempt of God, Psalms 2:4. He laughs (Only place in Bible that speaks of God laughing), not a laughter of humor, but scoffs, mocks, to think that puny people can shake a finger or even their fist of fury in God’s face threatening Him with extinction, thinking God will be unnerved, shaken off His throne.
Change of attitude, Psalms 2:5. God is annoyed, irritated. Laughter is turned to anger. God no longer sits in silence but speaks. God will have the last word. Holiness is now moved to judgment, God is infuriated, indignant,
Hebrews 12:1919 and the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard entreated that no word more should be spoken unto them;
Psalms 5:55 The arrogant shall not stand in thy sight: Thou hatest all workers of iniquity.”
Psalms 7:11 “11 God is a righteous judge, Yea, a God that hath indignation every day.”
Psalms 2:66 Yet I have set my king Upon my holy hill of Zion.”
Confident declaration, Psalms 2:6. The nations and people’s hope to eliminate every trace of God from existence, God speaks with undaunted confidence, “Yet!” (KJV) In spite of this foolish attempt, God has settled the matter. God has done what humanity wishes would never happen. With all the planning, politicizing, plotting, poling, proposals, God has settled the matter, Psalms 119:89 For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven. The people are infuriated, nations disconcerted, those in leadership stressed , God has already accomplished their worst nightmare, what they hoped would never happen, has. Jesus is forever in control, and not one person can change this.
Psalms 2:6 Christ is on the throne! Man cannot vote Him off, run Him off, pressure Him off, scare Him off, it is settled! Christ will be King, the only Potentate! God is not intimidated, Jesus is there to stay! God has the last laugh and God has the last word. Man says, “this is what I’m going to do!” God speaks up, “This is what I have already done!” Their greatest fears become a reality,
Psalm 110:1–2 ESV
1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” 2 The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!

III. Sovereign Son: Ruling, Psalms 2:7-9.

The voice of the world has spoken, nothing important or intelligent, very foolish and futile talk. The voice of God has spoken, calm and confident, and yet agitated, frustrated. The voice of Christ now speaks, reiterating reemphasizing, resounding the certainty of His position and power.
Christ will execute what God has decreed and bestowed to the His Son; universal inheritance; everything will be His! All that the Father has planned and purpose in Christ will come to pass in time and history.
When an Army officer arrives to take a new command, he brings his orders with him to show that he has the right to be in charge. If a man takes over without orders, he is breaking the chain of command and is acting on his own.
The Decree, Psalms 2:7. God from all eternity, did, by the most wise and holy counsel of his own will, freely, and unchangeably ordained whatsoever comes to pass. The nations and peoples state with uncertain determination, God speaks with resolute certitude.
The Declaration, Psalms 2:7. Christ affirms the Father’s sovereignty. Had not God decreed or set in order what is to come to pass, He would cease to be God, He is not God, He cannot be God, but God did Psalms 2:6. Man is foolish in thinking he can stop God!
The Determination, Psalms 2:7 I will…Psalms 2:8 Ask of me, and I will…God does not have to wait for things to happen in order for Him to know what is going to happen, Psalms 2:6 As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill, Acts 13:28-33.
Christ’s death and resurrection, His submission to the Father’s will in dying, and God raising Christ again, guarantees a rich legacy (redeemed peoples) to the Son —a vast inheritance (redeemed peoples) which is now being progressively realized and fully given during the Millennial Kingdom, Revelation 11:15.
Large host of those whom God had given to Christ, love gift, all will come to Christ and make up Christ inheritance.
John 6:3737 All that which the Father giveth me shall come unto me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
John 6:3939 And this is the will of him that sent me, that of all that which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.
John 17:22 even as thou gavest him authority over all flesh, that to all whom thou hast given him, he should give eternal life.”
John 17:2424 Father, I desire that they also whom thou hast given me be with me where I am, that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
Romans 1:44 who was declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead; even Jesus Christ our Lord,
Declared,” Greek word, English word, “horizon.” The horizon is the dividing line between earth and sky. The resurrection is the dividing line between humanity and deity, its what distinguishes, sets Him apart, makes Him more than human, but God.
In the resurrection, God made a bold statement about Jesus!
The declaration of Jesus deity is made in a powerful and pronounced way, Romans 1:4declared.”
Jesus is not just man; He is God.
Jesus is the Son of Man because He came out of the Womb.
Jesus is the Son of God because He came out of the Tomb. He came out of the grave, burst the bands of death. Nothing declares Jesus to be God more than an empty tomb.
His Dominion. Psalms 2:9, Christ will use whatever force necessary to subdue the world, bring order and control, defeat and conquer. “Shall,” implies resistance and these who resist will be shattered and crushed. The King will send messengers with a word of truce. If they reject, He will use force, taking a drastic step to claim what is His by divine and sovereign decree. Christ calls everyone to repent before He must use force.

When did and How is Christ declaring this truth?

After Christ’s death and resurrection, Christians preached Jesus, Colossians 1:2323 if so be that ye continue in the faith, grounded and stedfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel which ye heard, which was preached in all creation under heaven; whereof I Paul was made a minister.
When Christ’s preachers speak it is Christ Himself declaring the decree to humanity, Ephesians 2:1717 and he came and preached peace to you that were far off, and peace to them that were nigh:”
The preachers of the gospel are fulfilling the proclamation of Psalms 2. Christ is extending his rule over the world by extending his Word throughout the world.
It is an Exclusive Message, there is only one way, one path, one Gospel. Many roads to hell but only one way to heaven.
It is an Emergent Message, it is God’s message to the world, God’s good news is Jesus. God’s solution or answer to our most deepest problem, our greatest dilemma. It is not a baptist message, a denominational message, it is God’s message.
1 Corinthians 1:23 ESV
23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles,
1 Corinthians 2:2 ESV
2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
Colossians 1:28 ESV
28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

IV. Seeking Spirit: Rousing, Psalms 2:10-12.

Sinners are warned, give up their rebellion and humble themselves in submission to Jesus, embrace Him, take Him, own Him, turn everything over to Him, before it is too late!
Note the Insistence, Psalms 2:10 Now therefore… 2Corinthians 6:2 “2 (for he saith, At an acceptable time I hearkened unto thee, And in a day of salvation did I succor thee: behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation):”
Note the Instruction, Psalms 2:10-12.
Psalms 2:10, think long, hard and very carefully about your life and choices. Think how foolish and futile your attempts at fighting God are?
Take God’s side, realign their lives, position their lives in a proper proximity to God, Psalms 2:11.
A changed heart filled with fear of awe and reverence for God. Psalms 2:12, humble submit to the King! Subject yourself to a lower position under His authority.
The choice is clear, it is better to bend and bow rather than be broken in the end, Psalms 2:12 lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath is quickly kindled. The time is now, opportunity is before you, the invitation is given, turn from the wickedness and evil ways, turn to the King, turn to Jesus.
GIVE UP! SURRENDER! This is the last word before all hell break loose upon this world and those who fight against God.
Every sinner, rebellious individual, haters of God, despiser of truth, they are all looser, they have been defeated!
This is an urgent call, no time to waste, hurry up, make the decision, make Christ yours, take the proper side, choose righteousness over evil, choose heaven over hell. Believe the truth rather than the lie.
Note the Indisputable outcome, Psalms 2:12 Blessed are all who take refuge in Him. Synonymous to having saving faith, John 5:24
John 5:24 ESV
24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
With man’s repeated attempts at resisting, rebelling, rejecting God’s kingdom and authority, the Lord has set His Son as Lord over all and invites sinners to come and embrace him now!
Come to Christ by faith!
Acknowledge your rejection, rebellion, your rottenness of sin. Sober admission of wretchedness!
Embrace Jesus, “Kiss Him,” take Him, love Him, surrender to Him, bend and bow to Him!
