The way to spiritual life and vitality is to live by the Word of God.

In the Australian bush country grows a little plant called the "sundew." It has a slender stem and tiny, round leaves fringed with hairs that glisten with bright drops of liquid as delicate as fine dew. Woe to the insect, however, that dares to dance on it. Although its attractive clusters of red, white, and pink blossoms are harmless, the leaves are deadly. The shiny moisture on each leaf is sticky and will imprison any bug that touches it. As an insect struggles to free itself, the vibration causes the leaves to close tightly around it.

Just as the sundew plant lures insects in and traps them, so Satan seeks to lure us into his traps. But unlike the insects, we have a way to escape the devil’s traps! God has given us a way out.

Our weapon in the battle against Satan is the Scriptures. Scriptures have promised us that when temptations come, there is a way out. If Satan tempted Christ while He was on Earth, then we can be sure he will tempt us as well. How can we resist him? Of course Jesus was able to resist the devil because He is God, but how do we as Christians resist the devil’s temptations?

None of us have the strength to resist the devil on our own. First Corinthians 10:12 says, “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” Even with all the resolve we have, we cannot stand against the attacks of Satan. We must have God’s help.

God promises that whatever the temptation that comes into your life, He will give you a way to get away from it. You don’t have to sin! You have a way to resist the devil and trust God. The way Christ shows us to resist the devil is through quoting Scripture.

God has provided His Word as our way of escape. Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” When we have God’s Word hidden in our hearts, there will be no room for the devil to enter our lives.

What is the devil tempting you with today? Where is he attacking you in your Christian life? You don’t have to fall into his traps! God has provided a way of escape for you.

Right now, grab a piece of paper and write out the areas in which you are struggling—pride, anger, lust, envy, attitude? Whatever it is, write it down. Then, go through the Bible and search for verses on that topic. You can use your index or if you have a computer program you can do a word search. Write out as many verses as you can find on the subject. Next, make some little cards (on note cards or slips of papers) with the verses on them. Carry those cards with you today and pull them out when you are tempted to sin. Use God’s Word as your weapon against the devil.
