Romans 1:16-17 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.””

Summary

over the last few months we have been talked about how we personally can know God as father, saviour, healer, and so much more.
we also learned that we can know him through worship prayer and even in our darkest times we can still know him.
now we are on this series that is all about making him known

Not ashamed

Romans 1:16 ESV
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
This verse when I was in youth was super popular. rappers like Lecrae, Trip Lee and Andy Mineo KB and more all belonged to a group called 116 clique.
Athletes such as Michael Lorenzen, Bubba watson and more had this tattooed on them
116 became a cultural symbol in the 2010s but what does it mean
The Apostle paul is writing to the Romans church a place that is in desprate need of the Gosepl he him self is a Romans Citizen and is making an appeal to his Roman brother an sisters that the Gospel is trust worthy
Romans: An Introduction and Commentary 1. The Theme of the Gospel: The Righteousness of God Revealed (1:16–17)

I am not ashamed of the gospel. This is an instance of the figure of speech called litotes: Paul means that he glories in the gospel and counts it a high honour to proclaim it. Cf. C. K. Barrett, New Testament Essays (1972), pp. 116–143.

The Gospel that Paul is taking about is the very Gospel in which we are saved by.
Paul simply explains this Gospel in a later letter to Timothy
1 Timothy 1:15 ESV
The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
Essentially what Paul is saying here is that there is no need to be ashamed of this Gosepl because it is the only way that anyone can come to christ and that this message of good news is for all that believe it.

Salvation

for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17

We discussed that salvation used to belong to the jewish people however since christ has come he had broke that divide and salvation belongs to those who believe
Romans 10:9 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Paul is talking as former Jew in a Roman Context (rare)
The salvation belongs to him the same way it applies to us
This message is for everyone in this context the Semetic world (jew) Roman world (Greek) the same way the gospel is relevant to all that hear it today

Life of Faith

Romans 1:17 ESV
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
This is a call back to the book of Habakkuk that we discussed before christmas that those who follow God shall live by faith.
Habakkuk 2:4 ESV
“Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.
With the Gospel of Christ we are called to live in faith and righetousness
Romans: An Introduction and Commentary 1. The Theme of the Gospel: The Righteousness of God Revealed (1:16–17)

in this gospel there is a revelation of God’s way of righteousness—a way of righteousness based on the principle of faith and presented to men and women for their acceptance by faith

All of our goodness in which we are worthy of the Gosepl comes from the fact that Jesus had died for us and has made us righetous through his atoning sacrifice.
God has revealed him self through the Gospel of Christ and it is with this that we are able to live by faith

Conclusion

If the Gospel we believe in is the salvation of all that believe it and that through it comes righteouness and faith why would we be ashamed of it?
I encourage all of you to deeply reflect on that. how can we live a life where we are not ashamed of the very Gosepl that saved us.
