There are three things I want you to know by the itme I am finished with our time together today.
1st. I want you to know how very deeply you are loved.
2nd, I wanyt you to know why that matters.
3rd, I want you to see with new eyes the Glory of Christ and to understand why his glory is so very different the glory of kings, and presidents, of billionares and Generals.
To get there I would like to invite you to look at Mark 10:32-45
And perhaps as we explore this beautiful story together we will being to see what the Glory and the love of jesus means for us all.

Points to make:
On jesus’ journey from galilee to jerusalm this is the third time that jesus has fortold his coming death. and it is the most detailed as he describes how the chief priests will condem him and hand him to the gentiles.
Once again he not only predicts his death but his resurection.
Mark leaves us with no wiggle room on this point Jesus knew he would die and he knew the manner of his betrayal and his death. He also knew that he would conquore death.
Finally on this point once again the disciples might have heard his words but they didn’t understand the message.
They were still expecting a victorious reign.
James and John’s impertinant question.
They address jesus as you would a king.. looking for a favor.
Jesus answers them as a loving parent.
He doesn’t promise “up to half his kingdom” the traditional response. But he lovingly listens to thier request and he doesn’t scorn them for thier enthusiasm, orshame thiem for thier pride. He invites them to follow him.
to follow him to the cross.
The cup he refrences is Gods wrath poured on jesus out for our sins and the baptism he describes is his death.
He is inviting them to share his mission and to even share in his martyrdom. but he doesn’t give them what they want. because he can’t that has already been decided.
Now we don’t know what he means by Right and left since we never hear mention of anyone sitting on his right and left in heaven. But one solid guess and it is the one I think fits is the cross . at the cross there are two thieves next to him. God Chose them to be on his left and his right in his glory. It isn’t exactly what they were hoping for, and Once again we are reminded God gives us what we need not what we want.
Now while jesus was able to keep his cool with James and John’s impertinent question the rest of the disciples were not so calm with they heard about it.
When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.
They were angry, jealous and betrayed by james and John’s question. Maybe they thought it was rude, maybe they thought it wasn’t fair to try to get the best seats in such a pushy manner. Maybe they wished they had thought of it first.!
Either way Jesus had to respond to their discord by once agian calling them together for a lecture.
Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
This is one more discussion on the upsidedown nature of the kingdom of God. Here Jesus contrasts the way of earthly glory with heavenly Glory. Earthly Glory is self serving here Kings and Presidents, billoinares and generals are served and by the many.
But heavenly Glory is guided by servant heartedness. It desires to serve rather than be served.
There is a model of leadership based on this idea that we call servant leadership. You can even get a certificate in it from Cornell Univeristy.
According to the Robert Greenleaf center for servant leadership. “A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong. “ Which is fantastic! A great way to lead and a great way to live! We know that because Jesus invented it first! Before Mr. Greenleaf started writting about it in the 70’s .
Jesus calls his disciples to live as servants, to desire to serve rather then be served them he gives them the ultimate reason to do so! Because it what he is doing for them now!
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Here jesus turns the idea of Glory on it’s head.
He calls himself the son of man. a phrase that comes from Daniel.
“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
Here he have a heavenly image of son of man being honored and lifted up by God the father.
He is lifted to the highest place. why because he was the very best servant.
He obeyed his fathers comand and lowered him self to become a sacrifice and a ransom for many. The image we are supposed to understand is that King Jesus. came to earth not to be honored and not to be wlecomed like royalty but to suffer and die so that we could be welcomed by him as family.
And for that he was lifted up and declared worth of all honor and praise and glory and placed on the throne of creation.
This is what jesus wants the discpiles to understand and they will understanding after he returns. it is then that they will begin to see the radical nature of jesus’ love!
Do you?
Do you understand that he died because of his love for you. A love that overlooks your sins and your selfishness. The times you have denounced him and hated your neighbor. He loves you who are not worthy of love. He loves you and in doing so declares you worthy !
ANd because he has decalered us worthy he welcomes us!! Just as he welcomed james and John. we too come to him with self seeking prayers and imputant behaviors. We come to him like pushy children looking for our favorite dessert. demanding a seat on his lap despite our full diapers and sticky fingers.
And instead of shaming us and turning us away- Jesus welcomes us with love. and with wisdom. diaper changing had washing wisdom. he makes us new and he hears our crys and calles us beloved. Yes indeed you are loved and you are welcomed.
And He is glorious. Glorious because he took the sins of the world on his shoulders. glorious because he was obedient to the death. saying not my will but yours in the face of the terrible wrath of God. He is Glorious because he is God and he is Man. the creator in our midst in flesh to make himself known. He was glorious in his humility as he went to the cross and he is glorious now as he sits enthroned on high. He is the the son of man and everything has been placed under his feet and still he serves! Interseeding on our behalf from the throne of heaven.
He is glorious because
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
And He is glorious because as he sits on the throne of heaven he still bares the wounds of his torment and our salvation.
And as we look to him we are reminded of his words
Mark 10:43–44 (NIV84)
whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.
So let us follow his example and obey his command.
