Adoption into God’s family
From wretched sinner to a redeemed saint (7:24-8:1)
From walking in the flesh, to live according to the Spirit (8:5-8)
From desiring to dwelling (8:9-11)
“It is not enough for us to have the Spirit; the Spirit must have us.” - Warren Wiersbe.
What does adoption mean?
(N) the action or fact of legally taking another's child and bringing it up as one's own, or the fact of being adopted
the action or fact of choosing to take up, follow, or use something.
Maybe a few things to consider before we get started today.
When we were adopted- at baptism (Act2:38; Col1:17; Rom6:3)
How were we adopted- by the very hand of God (Col2:11)
Why were you adopted - because God loved us and sent Jesus (Jn3:16)
Who adopted us - - Jesus did, He was the method God intended with foreknowledge before the world was created (Eph1:5)
What did we receive at adoption - Salvation, forgiveness of sins (Jn1:12; Act2:38)
So, Lord willing here is what we are going to look at this morning in our time together.

May we look, lean, learn, from our text. May we engage together in doing so.
12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

This is a reminder, of who they are and what is the responsibility (challenge) to the church at Rome on what they are to do.

Whew, again, that is a lot to take in, so we better press on now.

Predestined to be adopted (Eph1:5)
5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,
We can see the what, the how and the why here in this verse
The power behind the adoption (Rom8:15)
15 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”
Adoption results (Gal4:5)
5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
Adoptions final results (Rom8:23)
23 And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.

I think we need to pause here and see life in the flesh vs. life in the Spirit.
We have no obligation to live by the, or live according to the flesh (v.12)
It is by being led by the Spirit, the Spirit puts to death the deeds of the body. (v.13)

You live free from the law of sin and death (8:2)
You have life in the Spirit, a life of peace (8:6)
Alive because of righteousness (8:10)
Alive because of the Spirits power (8:11)
So we are not obligated to the flesh, but to the Spirit (8:12-13)
It is the Spirit that gives life Jn3:3-5, 6:63)
Remember we may be dead to sin, but sin is not dead (Rom6:12-14)

A few thoughts to consider
Our flesh is sinful, it is in rebellion against God. Our sin gives us nothing good. Our debt is to the Lord and not to the flesh.
Don’t be deceived, the flesh claims to give life, but it brings death, it is the Spirit that brings life.
Jon Courson said this:
“I must mortify the deeds of the body, some people say, ‘I’ve got to crucify my flesh’ — but that is impossible to crucify yourself. If you lie down on a cross and pound a nail through your wrist, even if you somehow endure the pain, you’re only half crucified because you can’t pound in the other nail. How do you mortify the deeds of he flesh? There’s only one way; Through the Spirit.”
Don’t be the some of the Galatians who begin in the spirit, but expect perfection through the works of the flesh (consider Gal3:3)
Salvation does not follow the Spirit, the Spirit follows adoption into the family. - The Spirit draws us, we become a child of God and the Spirit then indwells us.
One more thought, quote this time from David Guzik (will paraphrase it):
“Paul didn’t say, ‘As many as go to church, as many as read their bibles, as many as are patriotic Americans, or take communion. It says as many who are led by the Spirit of God.”
Maybe you ask, how does the Spirit lead us?
He leads by guidance
He leads by drawing
He leads by governing authorities
He leads when we cooperate
This results in
Leading us to repentance
Leading us to think little of selves, more of Jesus and others
Leading us to truth, love, holiness and usefulness.
Want victory? It does not come under your power, it comes under the Spirits power and His leading. Don’t try to fight evil habits or tendencies on your own, allow the Spirit to do what you cannot do on your own, under your own power.

Who doesn’t like results? We do things to get to the results for the most part. Well, our adoption has results too.
By adoption your results are you are “son’s of God.” (8:14) -also consider Tit2:11-14
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,
13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, 14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.
By adoption you are living by Spirit not the working of the flesh (Consider Gal5:16-25) but we are choosing the spirit of adoption not slavery.
This is one of willful submission, loving obedience and trust, not full of fear, not dragged but led and fully willing.
Spirit of adoption brings us the Spirit of God (8:14)
The Spirit of the Son
The Lord did not hold back from us. God did not hold back His only begotten Son.
When we understand our adoption, then we truly want to cry out, can cry out “Abba, Father.”
At adoption the Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are His!
When we submit with all our heart, all our mind, all our soul and all our strength, willingly, by our own choosing, in willful obedience our adoption is complete, we are children of God.
Now, the word adoption in the N.T. sense is snot adoption of a child, it is “being placed as an adult son.” We come to be born again into God’s family. God gives us a position as an adult son. A baby cannot walk, speak, make decisions, or draw of the family wealth. But the believer, the adult son can do all these things.
He can be led by the Spirit (8:14)
Walk in a manner worthy (Eph4:1)
Walk in obedience (1Pt1:22)
Walk in accordance to the Spirit (1Pt4:6; Rom8:5)
We are raised up by the Spirit (Rom8:11)
These are just a few, if you take time you can find many others to add to his short list.

With the Spirit of adoption that we can cry “Abba, Father” we have liberty and are free to follow Christ. First the Spirit says “Abba Father to us”
6 Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
We then can cry “Abba, Father” to God (8:16)
The Spirit of God is the Spirit of life and the Spirit of death. Life in God, adoption into the family of God by faith, and Spirit of death whereas able to allow the Spirit to put to death the deeds of the flesh (see Rom6:12-17).While He (the Spirit of truth) puts to death the things of the flesh, He reproduces the things, the fruit of the Spirit (Gal5:22-23).
Augustine said this, as simple and profound as it is, it is well worth it. When asked how to find the will of God, Augustine simply said, “It’s real simply, Love the Lord and do whatever you want.”
We still have one more verse to look at before closing out this morning.
17 And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.
Share in His suffering, share in His glory
As adopted sons, the suffering we may experience, will experience, have experienced
Some scriptures to consider regarding suffering (1Pt1:11, 2:20-24, 4:12-16, 5:1, 10)
turn with me to 1Peter2 for a moment then will look a little more there in 1Pt.
1Pt2:20-24 “20 For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God. 21 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, 22 who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; 23 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.”
Now look at
1Pt4:12-16 “12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; 13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. 14 If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler; 16 but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name.”
1Pt5:10 “10 After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.”
Look at the results, where the Spirit is only implied, He gives us what we need to deal, cope, endure and overcome the suffering we will go through.
