INTRODUCTION:

Week 1 - The Increasing Wickedness of Humanity (Ge. 1-11) and yet with each we see the Mercy of God!
Week 2 - Defining Sin (rebellion against God) and yet the free gift of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rm. 6:23)
Week 3 - Different Aspects of the Reality of Evil (Snake, Dragon, The Satan, Devil) and yet God came to us to give us abundant life! (Jn. 10:10)
SERIES WHY?… Dead to Sin and Alive to God
Romans 3:23 “23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
The divine glory was lost in the fall and mankind cannot possess it apart from Christ (EGGNT).
TODAY: Sin Affects Everything (to varying degrees)
Degrees to Sin - ex: OT/FT different sins required different sacrifices
Numbers 15:27-30 “27 “If one person sins unintentionally, he shall offer a female goat a year old for a sin offering. 28 And the priest shall make atonement before the Lord for the person who makes a mistake, when he sins unintentionally, to make atonement for him, and he shall be forgiven. 29 You shall have one law for him who does anything unintentionally, for him who is native among the people of Israel and for the stranger who sojourns among them. 30 But the person who does anything with a high hand, whether he is native or a sojourner, reviles the Lord, and that person shall be cut off from among his people.”
Opening Scripture:
John 19:11 “11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.””

Sin Impacts The Land

Jeremiah 3:9 “9 Because she took her whoredom lightly, she polluted the land, committing adultery with stone and tree.”
Leviticus 18:24-25 “24 “Do not make yourselves unclean by any of these things, for by all these the nations I am driving out before you have become unclean, 25 and the land became unclean, so that I punished its iniquity, and the land vomited out its inhabitants.”
Context: vv. 18:20-23 prohibitions against specific sexual relationships
Acts 3:21 “21 whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.”

Sin Impacts The Community

Numbers 15:30 “30 But the person who does anything with a high hand, whether he is native or a sojourner, reviles the Lord, and that person shall be cut off from among his people.”
Numbers 15:30 (IVPBBC OT): Providing contrast to inadvertent sin, this offense is committed with full knowledge of one’s actions and premeditated defiance of God and community.
1 Corinthians 5:9-12 “9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindlernot even to eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge?”

Sin Impacts Us

Our Sin Impacts Us

1 Corinthians 6:18-20 “18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

Others Sin Impacts Us

Examples:
Guilty by association - Elizabeth falling into Briarcliff lake
Enron scandal - early 2000’s scandal where corruption impacted 1000’s of people ( Skilling and Lay were found guilty of conspiracy and fraud in 2006).
Someone is on their phone and driving when suddenly they rear-end someone.
Drunk Driver injures or kills someone.
Someone who is a victim of abuse.

When the parent does not help the child to regulate emotion, children “have to find some way to hold themselves together and this is done defensively. Then they attempt to go through life using these defensive strategies, permanently cut off from the flow of mutual regulation with others.”23

Anatomy of the Soul: We are impacted while we are in our Mother’s womb
Deut. 24:14-15 ““You shall not oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your brothers or one of the sojourners who are in your land within your towns. You shall give him his wages on the same day, before the sun sets (for he is poor and counts on it), lest he cry against you to the Lord, and you be guilty of sin.
Conclusion/Reflection:
The whole of creation is impacted by sin…so what do we do about it?!
1 John 3:8 “8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy [LOOSE] the works of the devil.”
1 Corinthians 15:24-26 “24 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.”
Colossians 2:13-15 “13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”
Ephesians 6:18 “18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,
OTHER:
“Pentecostals suggest that not only does sin affect humanity's relationship with God, but it affects people's relation- ships with one another; it affects the state of the whole of creation” (Routledge)
