The Disciples Joy

5 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

The Beatitudes

2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

Sitting is the correct posture for a teacher. Jesus walks up a steep grade and and sits down the people (Disciples come to him) and Jesus begins to speak. This is not necessarily a mountain top experience like Moses as God handed down the law. Jesus is more than a law giver as the Beatitudes are more than law they are a way of life for the believer. 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Mt 5:3. What Jesus is referring to here is the blessedness of followers that live in the security of the Lord and not on their own means. People that are weak in their own strength rely on the Lord-those who live by their own means need not.

4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Those who mourn are described as those who have a heart for the world-those who are deeply concerned with the fallen society. For those who mourn they shall be comforted. This alludes to the Holy Spirit as the comforter that comes to comfort the caring people who pray for the world.
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Mt 5:5. Meekness is not weakness. I think we get that wrong. Meekness is described as gentleness. Meekness is humility in a space between anger and self-control. A meek person will inherit the Earth because they are in control of their spirit. How are you doing with your gentleness?

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Righteousness is really right-relatedness. This is not righteousness as related to the law, but relatedness to God. God wants us to be Holy as He is Holy. God wants us to be right-related to Him.

7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

We are disciples of Christ because of what He did for us. It was not that we deserved to be spared or saved, but because of Mercy. Because we are receivers of God’s Mercy, Grace, we now become channels of that same grace, not that we can save anyone, but that we can share the gospel and help them find Grace.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Mt 5:8. Pure of heart refers to not having impurities. Perhaps being sure of your beliefs knowing whose you are. Nicole Mullins sings a praise song, My Redeemer Lives, and in this song she says, “I know, that I know, that I know”.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

The peacemaker is really referred to as makers of peace or more closely makers of disciples of peace. It is not enough that you may be a gentle spirit and slow to anger but that you help others as well to become peacemakers.

10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

The world is often times living a world not of self-persecution, but of being the persecutor. In High School many might look at it as peer pressure. In the grown-up world it might look like standing on another to elevate ones self. Jesus allowed Himself to be persecuted for our sake. Those who allow themselves to be persecuted also are blessed, not for their sake but for righteousness sake.

11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

What should we do with the teachings of the Beatitudes? Suffering for the sake of the Kingdom seems to be a theme. Perhaps living our lives for something bigger than ourselves.
