Intro

A passage categorized by authors as addressing “Social Issues…Social Ethics....Dependence on God”(LBD)

“What are the natural starting and ending points?”(Allan, 33)

“the parallel material in the book of Luke’s “Sermon on the Plain” does not occur in one section, but is scattered throughout the Gospel. This suggests that the “sermon” is a compilation of Jesus’ sayings by the evangelist, rather than something spoken by Jesus on a single occasion” (LBD)
ie we shouldn’t divide this up as if it was one huge speach it might have been many smaller talks

“What is the Historical Setting of the passage and What is the Pupose of that passage in That Context?”(Allen, 33)

The setting within the text according to one author is, “After spending a night in solemn meditation and prayer in the lonely mountain-range to the west of the Lake of Galilee (Luke 6:12), on the following morning our Lord called to him his disciples, and from among them chose twelve, who were to be henceforth trained to be his apostles (Mark 3:14, 15).” (Easton’s Bible dictionary)
“Matthew and Luke may have been using a common source, “Q,” and arranging it to suit their theological aims (Davies, Setting, 20–25). The following chart shows the overlap between accounts in Matthew and Luke” (LBD)
Physical location - “The mountain here spoken of was probably that known by the name of the “Horns of Hattin” (Kurun Hattin), a ridge running east and west, not far from Capernaum. It was afterwards called the “Mount of Beatitudes.” (Easton’s)

What are the Meanings of Key Words in the Passage? (Allen, 35)

Worry (merimnáō) - ““to care for someone or something,” b. “to be concerned or anxious,” c. “to be intent on or strive after,” d. “to be anxiously expectant,” e. “to be solicitous,””(TDNTA)
“self-concern relative to the future” (TDNTA)
Clothed (περιεβάλετο) - “This verb literally means “to put around.” In the NT, it generally refers to putting clothing on someone” (Lexham Theological Word-book)
Gentile ἔθνος - "nation, a people, a large group based on various cultural, physical or geographic ties”(DBL Greek)
“Unbelievers” (NET Bible First Edition)
“Kingdom of God” - The kingdom of God is a theme that can be traced back almost to the beginning of the Old Testament. It first appears in Genesis 14, where we find Abraham offering a tithe of the spoils of war to Melchizedek, a mysterious king who was later accorded a semidivine status (Psalm 110) and to whom Jesus was likened (Heb 5:6).” (LST)

“How does the Literary Context Help Us Understand the Passage?” (Allen, 36)

“considered by Christians to comprise the heart of his moral perspective, especially as it constitutes his reiteration and reinterpretation of the Old Testament law.” (Pocket Dictionary of Ethics)
“....the first programmatic speech Jesus delivered....” (AYBD)

“What is the Literary Style and Function of the Passage?” (Allen 37)

What is the Genre?
What is the purpose of that Genre?

“What does the passage invite it’s listeners to believe?” (Allen, 39)

....About the World....
“His concern, as in the preceding verses, is with priorities, and the essential message of this passage is ‘First things first’, which means in fact ‘God first’.” (TNTC Mt)
.....About God’....
“Faith is, for Matthew, a very practical reliance on the care and power of the Father and of Jesus (cf. 8:8–10; 9:2, 21–22, 28–29; etc.). Anxiety is therefore its opposite, and is ruled out for the disciple.” (TNTC Mt.)

“How does the text invite listeners to respond to the dvine presence in the world?” (Allen, 40)

“ What this verse demands is, therefore, a commitment to find and to do the will of God, to ally oneself totally with his purpose. And this commitment must come first.” (TNTC Mt)
“People who serve God faithfully can trust Him to meet their material needs.” (FSB)
