John The Baptist

John is now 30, and called by God to prepare the way for the Messiah
V 1 sets the political scene
V 2 the High Priests that condemn Jesus
the call from God that John was expecting came
He came from the wilderness. the region of the Essene town of Qumran
We are going to concentrate on a word in the 3rd verse
Repentance what does it mean
what does it look like to an unbeliever
what does it mean to an unbeliever
what does it look like to a Christian
Repentance means
1 to turn, change direction, return, to repent, be converted
2 change of mind, repentance
3 to regret, be sorry, change one’s mind
John the Baptist was preaching a sermon on returning back to God

Turn Back To God

in the Old Testament the Israelites were told over and over to return back to God
God would send a prophet to warn them of the consequences of their sin
in Deuteronomy God gave the children of Israel the blessings and the curses to them if they followed God or other gods
John the Baptist was another of the old Testament prophets
He was preparing the peoples heart to receive the promised Messiah
God wanted to bless the people but with the Mosaic covenant it was conditional
if the people did what God said to do then God would bless them
Abrahamic covenant
Davidic covenant were unconditional-- God promised
the people at this time were still under the Mosaic covenant
and John was the last prophet calling people to repent = turn back to God
this Baptism like the Christian baptism is an outward display of what is supposedly in the heart
a repentance turning to God
this baptism was preparing the heart to receive Jesus
the Jews would baptize gentiles for their sin when they came into the Jewish faith
the hearts of the people baptized were not changed because a lot of these people crucified our Lord

A Change Of Mind

Repent and Believe Vs only Faith to be saved
one of the popular understanding for repent is to turn away from your sin and believe
the problem I have always had with this understanding is..
how can someone turn away from their nature
an unbeliever is a slave to sin
Chained to sin
ball and chain around his ankle
the person just can’t walk away
cant just say I am going to turn from what I am chained to
why would someone want to give up the sin they love?
so A change of mind
what is it? how does some one get it?
Change of mind =change of direction
in a auditorium feel safe watching a show. the you hear gun shots. in that instant your mind is changed.
you are now running for the door, you are not safe.
don’t care about the spilled pop corn. don’t care about being comfortable
don’t care that you are laying on a sticky floor
your mind has changed repented
Saul on the way to Damascus to imprison and kill the followers of Jesus
he has already imprisoned and beaten many
approved of the killing of Steven
was encountered on the road and had an encounter with Jesus/God
His mind was instantly changed...
so how does an unbeliever get a mind change?
the person is encountered with the gospel
meets Jesus through the pages of scripture
Romans 1:16 (LSB)
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,
then the regenerating power of the Holy Spirit
Ezekiel 36:26–27 LSB
“Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to do My judgments.
John 6:63 LSB
“The Spirit is the One who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
A change of mind/repentance unto salvation comes from God
Acts 11:18 LSB
And when they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, “Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life.”
Romans 2:4 LSB
Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?
2 Corinthians 7:9 LSB
I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to repentance. For you were made to have godly sorrow, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us.
2 Timothy 2:25 LSB
with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may give them repentance leading to the full knowledge of the truth,
repentance unto salvation is not something we can do on our own
God changes our mind
God gives us a heart that would hate out own sin
not just feel sorry
but to hate our sinful nature, knowing that if Jesus did not save us we would go to Hell deservedly so

The Believers Repentance

turn to Psalm 51.
David saw Bathsheba from his roof top
called for her, got her pregnant
killed her husband to cover up his sin
married her
Nathan the Prophet was told by God to speak to David
2 men 1 little lamb. rich stole the lamb for supper
David was furious. who is this rich man?
You David are this rich man. you stole Bathsheba
David was convicted in his heart of his sin
David had regret sorrow and needed to make this right
Psalm 51.
Psalm 32.
is there sins in your life that need repenting?
is there sin that God is convicting you about?
Is there sin that is causing your bones to waste away?
Is Gods hand heavy upon you?
It’s time to confess, and repent, and plead for Grace
