Last Time, We Looked at James 2:14-17
James is Talking About the Necessity of Living Out Our Faith
It’s More Than a Mental Trust and Allegiance
It’s Lived/Worked Out
“Faith Without Works is Dead”
James Goes on to Say:
James 2:19–26 (NASB95)
19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.
Even Demons Believe/“Have Faith”
“Believe” & “Faith” are the Same Root Word
Demons have Faith
And They Even Tremble with Fear Before God
We Don’t Want to Be Like the Demons…
So We’ve Got to have Something More than a Mental Faith
Even Though the Demons have “Faith”…
They Don’t have the Faith that We are Called to have
They Don’t Obey God
He Doesn’t have Their Trust or Allegiance
He Only has Their Belief…
Which is Useless
20 But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? 22 You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God. 24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
Abraham and Rahab are Textbook Examples of People…
Who, Not Only Believed in God…
But They Trusted in and Gave Their Allegiance to Him
If it Weren’t for Their Faith…
They Never would’ve Done What They Did
And if They had Never Done What They Did…
It would’ve Been Proof that They had No Faith
I Want to Focus on 2 Words We See in Verse 22…
That Help this Entire Section in James Make Sense
James 2:22 (NASB95)
22 You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected;
The 2 Words are:
“Working With” & “Perfected”
“Working With” = synergeō (sin-air-geh-oh)
It’s Where We Get Our Word “Synergy”
“Synergy” = When 2 or More Elements Combine to Produce a Greater Effect Than 2 Elements could’ve Produced Individually
“Perfected” = teleioō (tele-aw-oh)
teleioō = To Come to Completion
Let’s Read the Text Again
But this Time Let’s Insert What We’ve Learned
“You See that Faith has Synergy with Works…”
“And as a Result of the Works, Faith Came to Completion”
They Combine to Produce a Greater Effect than the 2 of Them could’ve Produced Together
Believing in the Gospel Without Living Like Jesus…
Provides Just as Much Justification as…
Living Like Jesus, But Not Believing in Him
One Without the Other is Useless for Justification/Salvation
But When They are Synergized…
They Produce Justification to Eternal Life
It Doesn’t Matter How Strongly You Believe that…
Jesus Died for Our Sins and Resurrected to Provide Us with Future Eternal, Resurrected Life
If You Don’t Give Your Allegiance to Him…
Which is Total Surrender to His Will…
You Won’t have Eternal Life
It Doesn’t Matter How Many Good Works You Do
You May Feed the Hungry, Clothe the Naked, and Show Compassion to Everyone You Meet
But if You Don’t Place Your Trust the Crucified and Resurrected Jesus…
Then You are Still in Your Sins…
And You Won’t have Eternal Life
The Life of a Christian is Trusting in Jesus and Living Like Jesus
That’s Why I Love the Word “Allegiance” so Much
It Captures Both
Give Your Allegiance to Jesus and Receive Eternal Life
