INTRODUCTION
A. Did you know that you can meet Jesus Christ in the Psalms?
1. Psalm 22 - pictures the Good Shepherd dying for the sheep (Jn.10:11) (NIV)
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

2. Psalm 23 - the Great Shepherd caring for the sheep (Heb.13:20-21) (NIV)
20 May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, 21 equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

3. Psalm 24 - the Chief Shepherd coming for the sheep

(I Pet.5:4) (NIV)
4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

This is past, present and future -

Christ died for us,

HE lives for us,

and will one day HE WILL come for us.

CRUCIFIXION PSALM 22

Psalm 22:1-31 (NIV)

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Doe of the Morning.” A psalm of David.

1     My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Why are you so far from saving me,

so far from the words of my groaning?

2     O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,

by night, and am not silent.

3     Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;

you are the praise of Israel.

4     In you our fathers put their trust;

they trusted and you delivered them.

5     They cried to you and were saved;

in you they trusted and were not disappointed.

6     But I am a worm and not a man,

scorned by men and despised by the people.

7     All who see me mock me;

they hurl insults, shaking their heads:

8     “He trusts in the Lord;

let the Lord rescue him.

Let him deliver him,

since he delights in him.”

9     Yet you brought me out of the womb;

you made me trust in you

even at my mother’s breast.

10     From birth I was cast upon you;

from my mother’s womb you have been my God.

11     Do not be far from me,

for trouble is near

and there is no one to help.

12     Many bulls surround me;

strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.

13     Roaring lions tearing their prey

open their mouths wide against me.

14     I am poured out like water,

and all my bones are out of joint.

My heart has turned to wax;

it has melted away within me.

15     My strength is dried up like a potsherd,

and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;

you lay me in the dust of death.

16     Dogs have surrounded me;

a band of evil men has encircled me,

they have pierced my hands and my feet.

17     I can count all my bones;

people stare and gloat over me.

18     They divide my garments among them

and cast lots for my clothing.

19     But you, O Lord, be not far off;

O my Strength, come quickly to help me.

20     Deliver my life from the sword,

my precious life from the power of the dogs.

21     Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;

save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

22     I will declare your name to my brothers;

in the congregation I will praise you.

23     You who fear the Lord, praise him!

All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!

Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!

24     For he has not despised or disdained

the suffering of the afflicted one;

he has not hidden his face from him

but has listened to his cry for help.

25     From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;

before those who fear you will I fulfill my vows.

26     The poor will eat and be satisfied;

they who seek the Lord will praise him—

may your hearts live forever!

27     All the ends of the earth

will remember and turn to the Lord,

and all the families of the nations

will bow down before him,

28     for dominion belongs to the Lord

and he rules over the nations.

29     All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;

all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—

those who cannot keep themselves alive.

30     Posterity will serve him;

future generations will be told about the Lord.

31     They will proclaim his righteousness

to a people yet unborn—

for he has done it.

B. Psalm 22 DESCRIBES THE CRUCIFIXION OF CHRIST IN AMAZING DETAIL.

THIS IS EVEN MORE AMAZING BECAUSE

WHEN DAVID WROTE THIS PSALM.

THE JEWS KNEW NOTHING ABOUT CRUCIFIXION

HOW WAS IT POSSIBLE FOR DAVID TO WRITE SO ACCURATELY ABOUT  JESUS, SO MANY CENTURIES BEFORE JESUS WAS BORN?

WELL, IT WAS THE HOLY SPIRIT INSPIRING HIM ABOUT WHAT TO PUT DOWN ON PAPER.

C. Here’s a brief summary of what we see:
1. Cry to the Father

            v.1  My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?  Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning?

 Matt.27:46  46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi,a lama sabachthani?”—which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”b

2. Period of Darkness

            v.2 O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, and am not silent.

Matt.27:45   45 From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.

3. Ridicule of the People

            vv.6-8 6     But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. 7     All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: 8     “He trusts in the Lord; let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.”

Matt.27:39-44  39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”

41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” 44 In the same way the robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

4. His thirst and pain

              vv.14-15  I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me. 15     My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay meb in the dust of death.

 John 19:28  28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”

5. His pierced hands and feet

              v.16 Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have piercedc my hands and my feet.

 Lk.24:39  39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

6. Gambling for His clothes

              v.18 They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.

John 19:23-24 23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. 24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said,

“They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.”a

So this is what the soldiers did.

(Remember: He endured all these things for you and me)

I. JESUS WAS THE REPROACHED ONE V.6

REMEMBER, DAVID WAS THE PERSON WRITING THIS PSALM.

HE WAS WRITING FROM HIS OWN HEART.

I DON'T THINK HE REALIZED THAT HE WAS PROPHESYING THE DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST.

DAVID WAS SPEAKING ABOUT THE SEVERE TRIAL HE WAS GOING THROUGH AT THAT TIME IN HIS LIFE.

HE MUST HAVE FELT ALL ALONE AND ABANDONED BY GOD.

AND THIS IS JUST HOW JESUS MUST HAVE FELT AS HE HUNG ON THE CROSS.

TOTALLY FORSAKEN BY GOD THE FATHER.

SEPERATED FROM THE FATHER FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER.

FORSAKEN BY GOD

SO THAT WE MIGHT NOT BE FORSAKEN  (II Cor.5:21).

WHO CAN FULLY UNDERSTAND THE ANGUISH, JESUS MUST HAVE FELT WHEN GOD TURNED HIS FACE AWAY.

II. JESUS WAS THE REJECTED ONE V.7

IT'S HARD TO BE REJECTED BY PEOPLE, BUT IT'S ESPECIALLY HARD WHEN IT'S THE VERY PEOPLE WE ARE TRYING TO HELP THAT REJECT US.

THESE PEOPLE WERE NOT SATISFIED WITH NAILING HIM TO A CROSS.

THEY CONTINUED TO RAIL AGAINST HIM.

THIS IS WHAT IS CALLED THE DEVILS ZOO.

NOTICE THE BULLS, LIONS,DOGS AND OXEN THAT TURNED UP AT THE CROSS.

ALL CHASING A WORM.

RAVENOUS WOLVES THEY WERE.  Acts 20:27

THE TRUTH IS THAT WHEN WE LEAVE GOD OUT OF OUR LIVES WE BEHAVE JUST LIKE THESE WILD ANIMALS.

YET WE WERE MADE FOR BETTER THINGS THAN THAT.

WE WERE MADE IN THE IMAGE OF OUR CREATOR.

JESUS WAS REJECTED SO THAT WE MIGHT LIVE LIKE THE CHILDREN OF GOD THAT WE WERE MEANT TO.

III. JESUS IS THE RISEN ONE V.22 - Heb.2:11-12

NOW WE MOVE FROM PRAYER TO PRAISE.

FROM SUFFERING TO GLORY

JESUS IS NO LONGER ON THE CROSS

HE'S ALIVE IN THE MIDST OF HIS PEOPLE, LEADING THEM IN PRAISE FOR THE VICTORY OVER SIN AND DEATH AND HELL.

THIS IS WHAT MAKES SUNDAY SO IMPORTANT

WE REJOICE ON SUNDAY

BECAUSE SUNDAY IS RESURRECTION DAY

SUNDAY IS THE LORD'S DAY

JESUS IS ALIVE AND SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD THE FATHER TODAY.

AND SO WE COME TOGETHER ON EACH LORD'S DAY TO SHOW THAT WE BELIEVE AND APPRECIATE GOD'S SACRIFICIAL GIFT AND HIS RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD.

WHEN WE STAY AWAY FOR TRIVIAL REASONS,

WE'RE SAYING THAT THE RESURRECTION HAS NO LONGER ANY MEANING FOR US.

IV. JESUS IS THE RULING ONE V.28

HE IS THE CROWNED KING

THE KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

BEFORE JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED, HE WAS DRESSED IN A KINGS ROBE IN ORDER TO MOCK AND RIDICULE HIM.

PILATE WROTE ON A SIGN AND HAD IT ATTACHED ABOVE HIS HEAD ON THE CROSS

THAT HE WAS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

THEY DIDN'T WANT HIM AS THEIR KING

THEY SAID AWAY WITH HIM.

BUT JESUS IS REIGNING TODAY.

WHEN WE BECOME A CHRISTIAN, WE BECOME A CITIZEN IN HIS SUPERNATURAL KINGDOM, THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN

V. JESUS IS THE RIGHTEOUS ONE V.31

ON THE CROSS JESUS SAID IT IS FINISHED.

IN DOINT THIS HE'S MADE SALVATION POSSIBLE

TO ALL PEOPLE OF ALL AGES Matt.11:28

JESUS THE RIGHTEOUS ONE TOLD HIS DISCIPLES TO GO AND PREACH THE GOSPEL TO ALL NATIONS

HE'S STILL TELLING US TO DO THAT. Mk.5:19

WE'VE BEEN GIVEN A MISSION AND WE'D BETTER BE DOING IT WHEN JESUS RETURNS.        I Cor.9:16

JESUS CHRIST DIED FOR ALL THE PEOPLE

ALL THE PEOPLE, ALL AROUND US.

IF WE DON'T TELL THEM

THEN AS FAR AS THEY'RE CONCERNED HE DIED FOR NO REASON AT ALL.

IF WE DON'T DO ANYTHING THEN WE'RE SAYING THAT ALL HE WENT THROUGH, HAD NO PURPOSE

LET'S BE OBEDIENT

LET'S GO FIND SOMEONE TO TELL THE GOOD NEWS TO.

DON'T BE AFRAID IF THEY THINK YOU'RE DIFFERRENT.

WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE DIFFERENT.

LIKE PAUL SAID;

HE WAS ALL THINGS TO ALL MEN SO THAT

BY ALL MEANS HE MIGHT SAVE SOME.
