MELCHIZEDEK SERMON

THERE ARE CERTAIN PEOPLE IN THE BIBLE THAT I'M SORT OF DRAWN TO.

ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE IS A MAN CALLED MELCHIZEDEK.

HE IS A MYSTERY MAN AND MAYBE THAT'S WHY I FIND HIM SO INTERESTING.

MELCHIZEDEK HAS THIS SUDDEN APPEARANCE IN GENESIS,

AND THEN WE DON'T HEAR ABOUT HIM AGAIN FOR A THOUSAND YEARS WHEN DAVID PROPHESIES ABOUT JESUS AND EQUATES HIM TO MELCHIZEDEK,

AND THEN AFTER ANOTHER THOUSAND YEARS PAUL WHILE EXPLAINING DAVID'S PROPHESY, RELATES MELCHIZEDEK TO JESUS AGAIN.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THIS GUY MELCHIZEDEK THAT TIES HIM TO OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST?

I. MELCHIZEDEK FORSHADOWED JESUS CHRIST'S PRIESTHOOD.

1. A Devine Revelation

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE ULTIMATE AUTHOR OF SCRIPTURE.  HE'S THE ONE THAT SPOKE THROUGH THE WRITERS OF THE BIBLE.  AND HE'S THE ONE THAT SPEAKES TO US WHEN WE READ THE BIBLE.

WHEN THE SCRIPTURES SPEAK TO US,

IT IS GOD WHO IS SPEAKING TO US.

THE EARLY READERS OF GENESIS DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO MAKE OF MELCHIZEDEK.

WHY OF ALL THE THINGS THAT HAPPENED TO ABRAHAM IN HIS LIFE OF 175 YEARS, WAS THIS INCIDENT WITH MELCHIZEDEK RECORDED IN THE BIBLE?

AND THEN DAVID CONNECTS MELCHIZEDEK TO THE MESSIAH IN

PSALM 110:4 "THE LORD HAS SWORN AND WILL NOT CHANGE HIS MIND, YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER IN THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK

Typology is “a hermeneutical concept in which a biblical place… person… event… institution… office… or object… becomes a pattern by which later persons or places are interpreted due to the unity of events within salvation-history”
