TI[berius] CAESAR DIVI AVG[usti] AVGVSTUS. Pontif[ex] Maxim[us] Tiberius Caesar - god - majestic/venerable priest - greatest/highest 1. Pay your taxes to the government 1. Pay your taxes to the government ‣ A biblical reason “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.” (Romans 13:1-2 ESV) “Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.” (Romans 13:5–7 ESV) 1. Pay your taxes to the government ‣ A biblical reason ‣ An ethical reason 2. Give God what belongs to Him “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.” (Psalm 24:1–2 ESV) 2. Give God what belongs to Him “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27 ESV) 2. Give God what belongs to Him ‣ Your life “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” (Romans 12:1 ESV) 2. Give God what belongs to Him ‣ Your life (Romans 12:1) ‣ Your love (Matthew 22:37) “And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37 ESV) “For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?” (1 Corinthians 4:7 ESV) “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 ESV)
