WAD'DA YA  DO

WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO?

John 21:1-14 (NIV)
Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish

21     Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias.a It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.b 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”

11 Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

This story happens after Jesus was crucified and risen from the dead.

Peter and the rest of the disciples are just hanging around.

They don't know what to do next.

Jesus was crucified.  He had appeared to them, but He wasn't there now.  So what were they to do?

PENTECOST HADN'T HAPPENED YET, THEY WERN'T FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT YET, SO THEY DIDN'T REALLY HAVE ANY DIRECTION TO GO IN.

They were fishermen, so guess what they did.  The only thing they knew to do.  They went fishing.

Peter is still the leader and they all followed him.

WAS FISHING THE RIGHT DECISION FOR PETER TO MAKE?

I don't know, but that's what he did and Jesus didn't call him to task on it.

NOW HERE WE ARE.  THE DISCIPLES ARE OUT ON THERE BOAT ALL NIGHT AND WHAT THEY USED TO DO FOR A LIVING, ISN'T WORKING NOW.  THEY FISHED ALL NIGHT AND CAUGHT NOTHING.

BUT  THEN JESUS CAME.

OH WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MAKES WHEN JESUS COMES.

verse 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

1. EARLY IN THE MORNING IS A GOOD TIME TO MEET WITH JESUS.

IT'S GOOD TO GET YOUR TANK FILLED UP AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DAY SO YOU CAN KEEP GOING THROUGH THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF THE DAY.

2. AT FIRST HIS DISCIPLES DIDN'T EVEN RECOGNIZE THAT IT WAS JESUS ON THE SHORE.

SOME TIMES IT TAKES A LITTLE WHILE TO GET INTO GOD'S PRESENCE WHEN WE BEGIN OUR DAILY QUIET TIME WITH HIM.

verse 5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

verse 6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

JESUS CALLED OUT TO THEM.  HE INQUIRED ABOUT WHAT THEY WERE DOING.  HE SAID;

verse 5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

JESUS KNEW THEY HADN'T CAUGHT ANYTHING, BUT HE ASKED ANYWAY.

JESUS IS INTERESTED ON WHAT WE DO.  AND HE WANTS TO HELP US DO BETTER.  SO       verse 6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

WHEN THEY DID WHAT JESUS TOLD THEM TO DO THEY CAUGHT A WHOLE NET FULL OF FISH.

WHEN WE GET GOD'S LEADING ON WHAT WE SHOULD DO, THINGS WORK OUT.

7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.

WHEN THEY CAUGHT SUCH A BIG HAUL OF FISH, SOMETHING CLICKED IN JOHN'S HEAD AND HE REALIZED THAT THIS HAD HAPPENED BEFORE.  IT HAPPENED IN ANOTHER TIME AND ANOTHER PLACE.

Luke 5:4-7 (NIV)
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let downb the nets for a catch.”

5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

JOHN BLURTED OUT, IT'S THE LORD

AS SOON AS PETER REALIZED THAT IT WAS JESUS STANDING ON THE SHORE.  HE GRABBED HIS GARMENT AND JUMPED OVERBOARD.

HE WAS GOING TO SEE JESUS AND NOTHING ELSE MATTERED.

8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.b 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

JESUS HAD PREPARED BREAKFAST FOR THEM.

10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”

11 Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn.

ISN'T IT INTERESTING THAT GOD KEPT THE NET FROM TEARING EVEN WITH 153 LARGE FISH.

GOD DOES THINGS FOR US EVEN WHEN WE ARN'T AWARE THAT HE IS DOING IT.

12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.”

JESUS INVITED THEM TO HAVE COMMUNION WITH HIM THERE NEXT TO THE FIRE

None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.

WHEN YOU KNOW SOMEONE YOU DON'T HAVE TO WONDER IF THE PERSON YOU ARE WITH IS THAT PERSON YOU KNOW OR NOT.  THEY KNEW IT WAS THE LORD.

13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.

JESUS MINISTERED TO HIS DISCIPLES.  JESUS STILL MINISTERS TO HIS DISCIPLES.

14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

JESUS MADE IT ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT HE WAS ALIVE.

HIS DISCIPLES, TO A MAN WENT TO A MARTYERS DEATH, WITH THE SINGLE EXCEPTION OF JOHN.  AND JOHN WAS BOILED IN OIL.  HE SURVIVED THE TORTURE AND THEN WAS EXILED TO THE ISLE OF PATMOS.

I'VE HEARD CHUCK COLSON TALK ABOUT THE WATERGATE COVER UP.  HE SAID THAT WHEN A PERSON IS TELLING A LIE HE WILL NOT QUICKLY DIE FOR IT.

BUT EVERY ONE OF JESUS' DISCIPLES WERE WILLING TO DIE OR ACTUALLY DID DIE WITHOUT EVER SAYING THAT JESUS' RESURRECTION WAS A LIE.

BECAUSE THEY KNEW THAT IT WAS THE LORD.

APPLICATION

MY FRIEND, WHAT DIRECTION ARE YOU GOING TO TAKE?

WHAT ACTION ARE YOU GOING TO DO?

ARE YOU JUST HANGING OUT?

ARE YOU FISHING AND NOT CATCHING ANYTHING.

JUST IMAGINE A PERSON THAT HAS FALLEN OVER THE RAILING OF A SHIP AND THEY ARE OUT THERE IN THE WATER AND CAN'T SEE ANYTHING BUT WATER IN EVERY DIRECTION.

WHAT GOOD WOULD IT DO TO TRY TO SWIM TO SHORE IF YOU DON'T  KNOW WHICH WAY THE SHORE IS.  SO YOU JUST TREAD WATER, HOPING THAT SOMEONE WILL COME ALONG AND HELP YOU.

WE DO TOO MUCH TREADING WATER.

BUT IF THIS PERSON COULD SEE THE SHORE LINE THEN THEY WOULD KNOW WHICH DIRECTION TO SWIM IN, AND EVENTUALLY THEY WOULD GET TO LAND.

WE NEED TO SEE THE LAND

WE NEED TO FOCUS ON THE LAND

WE NEED TO SWIM TOWARD THE LAND

WE NEED SPIRITUAL EYES TO SEE WHERE GOD WANTS US TO GO.
