A Man After God’s Heart —David Part #1—

 10-4-09

Going to begin new series today about the life of King David

·                    Excited about this

·                    David one of the central figures in OT

·                    2nd to Jesus—greatest King in Israel

I love that fact that in the account of his life

·                    There are so many places that WE can relate to

His journey AMAZING—but wasn’t perfect

·                    At moments it was raw and real

·                    But there was something in his heart and life that SO Loved the Lord and desired to please him

·                    That we see the redeeming grace of God working in the flawed—real life of David

We see a lot of ourselves in his journey

·                    And it really can help us grow in our walk

What I’m going to do is start off with some of the background pieces that made David so unique

·                    And then we’re going to talk about where his journey began  I Sam 16

Why was David such a key leader?

Man after God’s Own Heart

I Sam 13:1413 “How foolish!” Samuel exclaimed. “You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you. Had you kept it, the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom must end, for the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart. The Lord has already appointed him to be the leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.”[1]

·

Acts 13:22 I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.’*[2]

·

o       From time he was a teenage shepherd boy

o       During time Struggling trying to find Identity

o       To his reign as King

§        Had such favor with God

o       Man after God’s own heart

o       Define/distinguish

§        A lot of people follow God

§        Lots of shades/ways of following serving

§        Can follow in surface ways

§        David distinguished himself

§        He didn’t go for the surface

Toy Store Story—boy—can have ANYTHNG in the store

·                    Went and took store owner’s hand—if I have you—I have it all

·                    That was David’s heart—if I have you, I have it ALL
Common THREAD:  Great men/woman of faith Moses/Disciples/etc.

And even in the times when he stumbled so horribly—it looked like he lost everything

·                    Even behind his sin and rebellion

·                    Was this love for God

·                    That just didn’t stop

God’s love is tenacious

·                    It pursues us when we don’t deserved

·                    When we quit believing—HE still believes and loves us!

And DAVID had a little bit of that in His own heart—tenacity

·                    Of one who’s heart kept searching and running after God

·                    In the ups and the downs of life

·                    He was a man after God’s own heart

·                    Inspite of FLAWED weakness/failure—that’s how remembered

Promise—king wouldn’t end Jer 33:17  17 For this is what the Lord says: David will have a descendant sitting on the throne of Israel forever.[3]

§        I Kings 9:5

§        Israel thought natural line—but JESUS

Promise—king wouldn’t end Jer 33:17  17 For this is what the Lord says: David will have a descendant sitting on the throne of Israel forever.[4]

§        I Kings 9:5

§        Israel thought natural line—but JESUS

So where do we begin

·                    Turn to I Sam 16: 1-7

THE LORD said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? It’s time to move on—walk in new anointing—double portion last week—Jericho—lost victories—have to move on.

Fill your horn with oil; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided for Myself a king among his sons.

[5]

·

·                    Saul—context—Samuel

2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me.”

The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.”

4 Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?”

5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

When God’s looking for a King—doesn’t look at the outside

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?”

“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered, “but he is tending the sheep.”

Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit downa until he arrives.”

12 So he sent and had him brought in. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features.

Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.”

[6]

David One CHOSEN to be King of Israel

Remember, at this point David began as Shepherd boy

·                    Probably Young teenager

·                    Side of the hill

Runt of litter—littlest one

·                    Relegated to the forgotten hills with the flocks

·                    So Unimportant—dad didn’t call

·                    Looked forgotten—simple—nothing

o       It was like, there was a FAMILY REUNION—and they FORGOT to invite Him!!!

·                    But God saw something HE wanted

Youngest—

·                    Didn’t think it was worth the time to call him

·                    Youngest—sheep—smelly

What attracted God to David?

His Heart

·                    . The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

·                    What was in his heart—need to draw from clues in scripture

o       Need to lay ground work before we go into nuts/bolts of David’s life journey

Key theme—David’s love/devotion to God ALL his Life

·                    From the Beginning—when no one knew him—forgotten-hidden-unlikely

·                    David was known as a

·                    Worshipper

Can’t be minimized

·                    He moved into an ENCOUNTER place with the Living God

·                    That RADICALLY shaped his entire life

I believe He pierced something in worship realm—went to a place that no one in his generation had discovered . .

OBVIOUSLY—Got attention of God

From what we can tell from scripture—probably developed on a hillside with some sheep.

·                    Musician—singer

·                    More than that—Worshipper

Something HAPPENS when true worship happens

·                    God is ATTRACTED to it

·                    Jesus said in John 4:24—Father SEEKS worshippers—Spirit and truth

·                    David didn’t know that verse—but he did that!

Ps 22:3 3     But You are holy,  Enthroned in the bpraises of Israel—Enthroned in praises of Israel

3427 יָשַׁב, יָשׁוּב [yashab /yaw·shab/] v. A primitive root; TWOT 922; GK 3782 and 3794; 1088 occurrences; AV translates as “dwell” 437 times, “inhabitant” 221 times, “sit” 172 times, “abide” 70 times, “inhabit” 39 times, “down” 26 times, “remain” 23 times, “in” 22 times, “tarry” 19 times, “set” 14 times, “continue” five times, “place” seven times, “still” five times, “taken” five times, and translated miscellaneously 23 times. 1 to dwell, remain, sit, abide. 1a (Qal). 1a1 to sit, sit down. 1a2 to be set. 1a3 to remain, stay. 1a4 to dwell, have one’s abode. 1b (Niphal) to be inhabited. 1c (Piel) to set, place. 1d (Hiphil). 1d1 to cause to sit. 1d2 to cause to abide, set. 1d3 to cause to dwell. 1d4 to cause (cities) to be inhabited. 1d5 to marry (give an dwelling to). 1e (Hophal). 1e1 to be inhabited. 1e2 to make to dwell.

[7]

·                    Something happened for little David worshipping God alone on hillside

·                    Suddenly he wasn’t alone with his harp—their present day guitar—singing songs by Himself

·                    The very PRESENCE of the ALMIGHTY One overshadowed Him

\Wonder if that Psalm Ps 19:1  ‘Heavens declare glory of God’ was written on that hillside . . . . 1     The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

·                    Last week fall night walk—beautiful!

·                    I bet David had experiences like that!

And in the place of WORSHIP—entered the THRONE ROOM of the King of kings!

Throne room SO impacted him

·                    Because in throne room things changed for David—

·                    He viewed LIFE through his ENCOUNTER in the Throne Room

He linked his throne room encounter INTO His daily life (REWORD)

This is something SO important that we realize

·                    What David EXPERIENCED in the throne room

·                    Took throne room—applied it to wherever he LIVED

·                    One of LIFE themes of David over and over

He would face BATTLES through the grid of that Encounter

·                    He would face enemies thru the grid of that encounter

·                    Work thru relational conflicts . . .face his own sin . . . thru grid . .

·                    He would DREAM about his future—vision for LIFE—thru grid  .

He was RUINED for the Ordinary—thru the Grid of that Encounter

Contrast that with us—throne room disconnect!!

This all in his DNA from the very beginning

·                    In secret place where no one saw it

·                    Obviously, wasn’t matured/developed yet

·                    But GOD saw it—said this kind of guy I want to be around

·                    This is the kind of guy I can TRUST my people with

o       Are YOU that kind of person??  Are WE?? I wanna be . .

He had a passion to bring the Presence of God to his Generation

And one of the PASSIONS of David’s heart

·                    Was to bring that PRESENCE of the Lord into his generation

·                    To OPEN the doors of WORSHIP over the land

o       You’ll see that when we study the place where David Brought the ark of the Covenant into the center of the nation

o       You’ll see that in the places where He desired to build a temple to the Lord

Prophetic Acts Picture that impact us even today

The Territory David gained STILL impacts World (BOC) today

·                   Acts 15:16

16      ‘Afterward I will return and restore the fallen house* of David.

I will rebuild its ruins  and restore it,17      so that the rest of humanity might seek the Lord, including the Gentiles—all those I have called to be mine.

What is TENT of David??—Tabernacle!!

·                    Jesus—Son of David

o       Prophetic line of David—Promise someone reigning forever

Jer 33:17  17 For this is what the Lord says: David will have a descendant sitting on the throne of Israel forever.[8]

o       Hosanna to the son of David—Bethlehem, City of David

·                    All Nations all the nations, upon  . . . . .

Another prophetic thread of Tent of David—WORSHIP

·                    Tent of David

·                    Tent/Tabernacle of WORSHIP—Encounter!!

·                    Led Generation into encounter in worship they had NEVER KNOWN

Currently in BOC—worship transformation globally

·                    THAT is Tabernacle of David

·                    God wants to build us to be a Davidic house of worship

·                    Passion

·                    Able to TAKE the PRESENCE/POWER and the LOVE of God

·                    Into every Encounter in our lives

That’s why being a Davidic house of worship

·                    Passion

·                    Able to take the PRESENCE/POER of God

·                    Into every encounter in our lives

That’s why the BOC called to be

·                    Davidic house of Worship

·                    A People AFTER God’s own HEART

David’s brothers

·                    Weren’t necessarily BAD guys

·                    Probably GREAT guys

God wasn’t looking for great guys

·                    Looking for someone who would carry HIS heart

·                    AS King

·                    Worship DOORWAY that changes your HEART

Saul’s heart wasn’t clear—develop

God looking for a PEOPLE who will be that

·                    Press beyond the ordinary

·                    Move beyond status quo

·                    People of the HEART—after God—

·                    That’s why KEY that we study Davidic House

·                    KEYS for us to navigate life

·                    World Changers

12-13    Anointing Oil

·                    Explain

Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.”

13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers,

[9]

·                    Something CHANGED here for David

and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power.[10]

    • Moved to new level—new PROCESS
    • Interesting conundrum:  Immediately, he ‘was king’—but in natural it had not manifest fully
      • Many years until fully happened
      • Promise ripening to fullness of time

Pause—Personal APPLICATION

  • God anoint you—promise decreed * Have to embrace—process
  • To Mature into the promise
      • Perhaps do things about ‘new king born’—from outside—just looks like another baby
      • From inside—the DNA was set
      • Parallel that to us—God imparts—this is who you ARE
      • But this is what the world SEES
      • Juxtaposed realities in conflict
      • WHICH ONE WILL WIN???
      • Begin the JOURNEY to EMERGE into your true ID
        • The development of the King will not be complete
        • Until you complete the journey of what you are becoming

This is so good for us

  • The Account of David’s life is a story of a journey to emerge into destiny
  • He embraced things on journey that developed him
  • We embrace things as well

      • Decisive moments

So where does this lead us?  (Possible Frank D List???)

Lessons from Early years of David

God Sees you in Your HIDDEN Place—He has a Plan for You!

·                    We might feel OBSCURE—forgotten—like David

o       But GOD sees you—hasn’t forgotten you

o       Family REUNION—and they FORGOT to Invite YOU!!!

·                    Hillside—not even PRESENTED opportunities

·                    What could God do with a church like us?

o       Only CHANGE the HISTORY!!

§        For us—backside of rural life

§        What could God do here?

§        Prepare world changers

§        Loren Cunningham—all major history makers in BOC—came from rural towns:  Billy Graham; Loren; Bill Bright;  etc.

·                    God calls people from rural/unexpected places to change

We are ALL Called to be worshippersWill we become a people after his heart?

·                    It’s NOT the toys—it’s taking His HAND

·                    Depth/breadth of Love

Letting the Throne Room Encounter be BRIDGED INTO our daily life

·                    Practical LIVING ways

Saul didn’t do this—compartmentalized—Christian/Secular Life—lost Kingdom

David was deep worshipper

·                    Not a pansy

·                    Warrior—conqueror—ruler—FRIEND

·                    Man’s Man

Will we Bring Presence of God To Our Generation

·                    World Hungry for something real

o       David Touched something in Worship!

o       Opening up doors for people to ENCOUNTER the presence of the Living God?

·                    When Encounter—easy to Love

·                    God already doing this with us—that’s why OUTREACHES

·                    Invite people . .

TWO services—make room for more

·                    Reaching out to others

·                    ENCOUNTER

But Where does it begin??

·                    In place of Worship/Encounter with God

·                    In heart are you willing?

·                    I want to KNOW you
