What are going to be the most crucial virtues for Christ-followers in this century?

What do you think are some of the most important virtues right now?
What virtues do you think will be most critical for Christ-followers in the next 100 years?

Why humility? Because of what we have done and continue to do.

What are some ways in which Christ-followers have hurt people and/or creation through arrogance and pride?

Doctrine of Christian Discovery, Christian Nationalism, Division in the Church, Christian Leadership Scandals. “Holier Than Thou” Attitude, Crusades, Antisemitism, Slavery, Racism, Oppression of Minority Groups of All Kinds, Sexism, Rape of the Environment,....

Why humility? Because scripture calls for it.

Micah 6:8 (NIV)
God has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Proverbs 15:33 (NIV)
Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the Lord, and humility comes before honor.
Matthew 5:5 (NIV)
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Why humility? Because Jesus modeled it.

Philippians 2:8 (NIV)
And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!

Therefore...

Colossians 3:12–17 (NIV)
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
It is said that humility is truth. The path that will make us more like Jesus is the path to humility.
Mother Teresa, Mother Teresa: In My Own Words, p. 56
The noble choice to forgo your status, deploy your resources or use your influence for the good of others before yourself.
John Dixon, Humilitas
We all have the duty to work for peace. But in order to achieve peace, we should learn from Jesus to be meek and humble of heart (Mt. 11:29). Only humility will lead us to unity, and unity will lead to peace. Let us help one another to draw nearer to Jesus to learn to be humble and joyful.
Mother Teresa, Mother Teresa: In My Own Words, p. 5
Why, do you think, Mother Teresa thought that humility would lead people to unity?
If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?
Alexander Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago
Do you agree with Solzhenitsyn, or do you think that there are truly “evil” people?
Level 5 leaders are a study in duality: modest and willful, humble and fearless.
Jim Collins, Good to Great, p.22
Have you ever been able to work alongside a “Level 5 leader”? If so, what was your favourite thing about them?
For those who would learn God’s ways, humility is the first thing, humility is the second, humility is the third.
Augustine of Hippo
There are three great motivations to humility: it becomes us as creatures; it becomes us as sinners; and it becomes us as saints.
Andrew Murray
If anyone would like to acquire humility, I can, I think, tell him the first step. The first step is to realize that one is proud.
C. S. Lewis
Are you proud? How so?
Humility must always be doing its work like a bee making its honey in the hive: without humility all be lost.
Teresa of Avila

So, what work is the bee of humility doing in you?

Colossians 3:12 (NIV)
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Spend some time in lectio divina seeking to hear what God might be saying to you about your personal humility journey. If you’re comfortable, write some of of the thoughts and feelings you have down.
If you’re comfortable, feel safe, and if there’s time, share what you thought and/or felt Creator-God sharing with you in your small group.
If you’re comfortable, feel safe, and if there’s time, share what you thought and/or felt Creator-God sharing with you with the whole body.
