Exodus stands at the heart of the Old Testament scriptures as the greatest example of God’s saving grace (redemption) and power exemplified until the coming of Jesus Christ and His sacrifice at Calvary!!!
I want us to begin our study today by reflecting on something God told Abraham in Genesis 15:13-14
Genesis 15:13–14 NASB95
God said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years. “But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve, and afterward they will come out with many possessions.
Joseph as he dies and in Genesis 50:24-25 states with expectation in God’s promise to return...
Genesis 50:24–25 NASB95
Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will surely take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob.” Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely take care of you, and you shall carry my bones up from here.”
Exodus continues the narrative of Genesis… (1:1) “and”… the opening verses set the stage for God to work and REMEMBER His people Israel Exodus 1:5-10
Exodus 1:5–10 NASB95
All the persons who came from the loins of Jacob were seventy in number, but Joseph was already in Egypt. Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. But the sons of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly, and multiplied, and became exceedingly mighty, so that the land was filled with them. Now a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are more and mightier than we. “Come, let us deal wisely with them, or else they will multiply and in the event of war, they will also join themselves to those who hate us, and fight against us and depart from the land.”

God Remembered

In remembering His promise and His people God raised up one He would use… MOSES!
The people are oppressed
Baby boys being killed
Task and slave labor is brutal

Moses

40 years prepped by Egypt
schooling, management, military, rulership
40 years prepared by God
humility, shepherding, patience, personal wilderness
40 years people’s leader
prophet, lead through Israel’s wilderness, shepherd Israel, intercessor between God and Israel

Book Layout

As we go through this book of Exodus we will see God doing the work…
Ch 1-2 God Remembers His promise and people
Ch 3-18 God redeems His people in a powerful demonstration of who He is
Ch 12-13 is the beautiful picture of His redemption in the Passover
The scarlet thread as we see God revealing more of how He will fulfill His promise to bless ALL nations and peoples… a redeemer to come!
Ch 19-40 God gives His Revelation of who He is and how He intends to engage with His own people who He has redeemed
Ch 32-40 are really the response of the people to this revelation
The redemption process begins with Moses’ preparation for sure but we are introduced to how God will use this man in Chapter 3 at the burning bush!

God’s Redemption

God let’s Moses know He sees, He is coming close, He will bring them out!… oh and God wants to use Moses Exodus 3:7-10
Exodus 3:7–10 NASB95
The Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt, and have given heed to their cry because of their taskmasters, for I am aware of their sufferings. “So I have come down to deliver them from the power of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. “Now, behold, the cry of the sons of Israel has come to Me; furthermore, I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians are oppressing them. “Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.”
In this conversation God identifies Himself to Moses Exodus 3:14
Exodus 3:14 NASB95
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
The Bible Knowledge Commentary (3:11–15)
God told Moses to tell them, I am who I am (’ehyeh ’ăšer ’ehyeh, 3:14; cf. “I will be,” ’ehyeh, v. 12) and I AM (’ehyeh) has sent me to you (v. 14). This One said He would be with His people in their time of trouble and need. ’Ehyeh is probably a wordplay on Yahweh (LORD) in verse 15. Thus, the name Yahweh, related to the verb “to be,” probably speaks of God’s self-existence, but it means more than that. It usually speaks of His relationship to His people
WOW! You would think that speaking to God in a burning bush you would follow no questions. it takes some convincing and ultimately we see God bring along his brother Aaron to assist in speaking to Pharaoh…
Moses knew God, Aaron knew God… the people knew of God, and we see them approach Pharaoh Exodus 5:1-2
Exodus 5:1–2 NASB95
And afterward Moses and Aaron came and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Let My people go that they may celebrate a feast to Me in the wilderness.’ ” But Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and besides, I will not let Israel go.”

God Made Known

God will not only introduce Himself to Pharoah but also make Himself know to Israel… Notice the “I will” statements… Exodus 6:6-8
Exodus 6:6–8 NASB95
“Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. ‘Then I will take you for My people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. ‘I will bring you to the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you for a possession; I am the Lord.’ ”
With each of the plagues brought about by God, He states “so Pharaoh will know I AM…
Pharaohs would consider themselves deity
They would see gods all around them in nature, creatures, and cosmos
When I picture this I think of the scene in the Avengers movie with the Hulk and Loki… PUNY GOD!
God would demonstrate and introduce Himself as ALL POWERFUL, CREATOR GOD, OVER ALL THINGS!

The 10 Plagues

You and I serve a powerful mighty, Holy and Righteous GOD!
He deserves reverence, respect, fear
In the book the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe Lucy is told about Aslan who is a Lion!! She ask “is He safe?” Mr beaver snaps back a declares… “Safe!? Have you not listened? He is a lion! No He is not safe, but He is good.”
Mark my words… You and I are seeing a good God demonstrate a glimpse of His power and His requirement for obedience… God sends 10 plagues to introduce Himself...
The water in Nile turned to blood (7:14-25)
Frogs overrun country (8:1-15)
Gnats swarmed the people (8:16-19)
Swarms of flies cover land (8:20-32)
Disease to livestock and they die (9:1-7)
Boils and sores on people and animals (9:8-12)
Hail destruction of crops and vegetation (9:13-35)
Swarms of locust devour (10:1-20)
Egypt covered in darkness three days (10:21-29)
Death of firstborn, man and beast, PASSOVER (11:1-12:30)

The Passover

The consequence for sin is death, ALL sin, ALL deserve death…
But God’s Mercy and Grace pictured beautifully in the passover…
Also known as feats of unleavened bread (leaven/yeast sin)
A lamb slain, its blood the covering,
Mercy given to those who had the blood covering of the lamb, death to those who did not

The Panic

The Egyptians push them out, and Israel plunders them so to speak
Some Egyptians believe in God and leave with them!
They journey to the edge of the Red Sea, there they camp
Pharoah and the people realize all the work force is gone and pursues
Panic occurs… but God!!! Exodus 14:9-15
Exodus 14:9–15 NASB95
Then the Egyptians chased after them with all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his army, and they overtook them camping by the sea, beside Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon. As Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel looked, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they became very frightened; so the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord. Then they said to Moses, “Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you dealt with us in this way, bringing us out of Egypt? “Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” But Moses said to the people, “Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever. “The Lord will fight for you while you keep silent.” Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the sons of Israel to go forward.
Waters part (miles wide) with an east wind
But Egypt is wiped out!

The Praise

The pattern with Israel is praise God and then grumble and complain as they journey (map)
Thirsty… want to go back… God supplies… Praise
Hungry… want to go back… God supplies… Praise
War… want to go back… God gives victory… Praise
Their default is to want to go back to Egypt, back to slavery!!!

God’s Revelation

God then established His law with the people, His commands!
These first ten are the central premise for all God’s Law
They are ten words, central to Israel’s religious and civil rule
First four are VERTICAL, the last six are HORIZONTAL
God is establishing a THEOCRACY… with these people He has called out of Egypt.
Israel is called a nation/kingdom of priest
Mediators between the would and God as they live out what God commanded them
Exodus 20:1-8; 12-17
Exodus 20:1–8 NASB95
Then God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Exodus 20:12–17 NASB95
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you. “You shall not murder. “You shall not commit adultery. “You shall not steal. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
God would give another 52 more commands for this people called out to live under His rule as their King
God continually offers blessings if they obey, and consequences for disobedience
God would give great detail to the place of His dwelling… the tabernacle!
God equipped people for His work needed accomplished Chapter 31
What a picture as we are considered His dwelling place now under Christ!
Worship and service to Him is not haphazard or careless
God declares this of Himself as He presents Himself to Moses… Exodus 34:6-7
Exodus 34:6–7 NASB95
Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”

Response of People

Impatient
Desire for excitement emotion
Desiring things seen and to be like Egypt
Not replacing God just adding gods
We begin this book seeing the hard heart of Pharoah, amazed that he would refuse God Almighty
As we close this book we see that the people themselves have hard hearts, longing for the things of this world over God
They give the Lord lip service, but their hearts seem far from Him

God has:

Been seen in Genesis as creator
Now in Exodus He Declared Who He is “I AM
Demonstrated His Power and Redemption (Mercy and Grace)
Drawn close as One who Dwells with His people
He is a God who wants to be known… and makes Himself known!
Your wilderness does not define your God!
God has called us out of this world (Egypt) with a promised land ahead.
May the wilderness of your soul be a season to draw close to the God who draws close to us, the One who redeems us!
