Story about Evan almost drowning and I saved him
And that’s what communion is…it is a time to reflect and remember what Jesus did on the cross…the salvation that we have found ONLY through him…the moment that he jumped in…immediately…to pull us out of what we ourselves had caused…pulling us out of sin…and so today we remember...
And so before we take communion I want us to understand a couple of things...
Here at Lakeshore we believe:
Communion was the last action that Jesus took with his disciples before he was crucified
That while we have communion on the 1st Sunday of the month and the 3rd Thursday at Midweek - we believe that the Bible doesn’t specify how often communion is to be done - only that when we do it, we do it in remembrance of what Jesus has done for us
We believe that the bread, or the cracker for us, is a symbol or representation of the body of Christ that was beaten…kicked…abused…whipped…spit on and crucified on a cross in our place, and that the juice, is a symbol or representation of the blood of Christ which was shed for us saving us from God’s judgement and that they are not the actual body and blood of Christ…which is a fancy term called Transubstantiation
It is a time for us to re-commit ourselves to the Lord and decide to follow him more faithfully.
We believe that this is a time to reflect and repent of any unconfessed sins that you may have. It is a time where we can examine ourselves. We are to not enter into communion with any guilt or sin that is weighing us down. The Bible says that if we do, then we are eating and drinking judgement on ourselves.
It is a time to remember the sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf so that you could be free and spend eternity with him
Lastly - we believe that communion is only for the believers - only for those that have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ - and so if you do not have a relationship with Jesus - we politely ask to you refrain from communion, and instead examine your life and consider having a personal relationship with Jesus
And so at this time, I ask that you make your way to the front so that you can get your elements - and once everyone has them we will take them together. While you are doing so, use this time to, like I said, reflect and repent on any unconfessed sins and remember what Jesus has done for each and everyone of us!
1 Corinthians 11:23–24 (NIV)
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
Let’s eat the bread together in remembrance of Jesus dying on the cross for our sins.
1 Corinthians 11:25 (NIV)
In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
Let’s drink together in remembrance of the precious blood of Christ that was shed for the forgiveness of sin.
1 Corinthians 11:26 NIV
For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
