Reflecting on the death of Jesus

On this Good Friday, we reflect on the death of Jesus on the cross and the profound significance it holds for us as believers. Today, we consider the idea that Jesus' death was necessary to bridge the gap between humanity and God, providing us with the hope of eternal salvation.
The Fall of Humanity
From the beginning, humanity has been separated from God because of our sin. In Psalm 22, we hear Jesus cry out, "My God, why have you forsaken me?" This cry echoes the desperation of humanity, feeling abandoned and distant from God. But God did not abandon us to our sin. In Isaiah 52:13-53:12, we read about the suffering servant who was pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities. This servant is none other than Jesus Christ, who took upon himself the sins of the world, so that we might be reconciled to God.
Jesus Dies on the Cross
In John 18-19, we see the heartbreaking events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion. Jesus is betrayed by Judas, arrested, tried, and sentenced to death. And yet, in the midst of this tragedy, we see the glory of God's plan for salvation. Hebrews 10:16-25 reminds us that Jesus' sacrifice was once for all, providing us with full assurance of faith. Jesus' death on the cross was the ultimate sacrifice, the only way to bridge the gap between humanity and God.
The Power of Transformation
As Jesus hung on the cross, he cried out, "It is finished!" (John 19:30). This declaration marked the completion of God's plan of salvation. Because of Jesus' death and resurrection, we can now be transformed by the power of God. Hebrews 10:25 tells us that we can have confidence to enter the most holy place because of Jesus' sacrifice. Through repentance and faith, we can receive the hope of eternal salvation.
Conclusion and Application
Brothers and sisters, as we reflect on Jesus' death on the cross, let us remember that it was necessary to bridge the gap between humanity and God. Let us also remember that Jesus' sacrifice provides us with the hope of eternal salvation and the power to be transformed by God. May we approach the cross with humility and gratitude, knowing that we have been reconciled to God through the blood of Jesus Christ. Let us live our lives in a way that reflects this truth and may we share this message of hope with all those around us.
In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
