Genesis 25:1–4 ESV
Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah. She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.
He remarried, had a ton more kids.
Those kids had a ton of kids
Genesis 25:5–6 ESV
Abraham gave all he had to Isaac. But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still living he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the east country.
Kethurah was a concubine, as was Hagar.
Did he have more?
Did God allow this?
Notice here that only the son of Sarah was blessed.
Why?
Short story, a guy had a son with his wife. That was his favorite. He had kids with other women. The guy was rich but all those kids he just gave stuff to and sent them away.
What does that sounds like?
Sounds like a deadbeat to me.
Were all the gifts enough?
I believe God provided for those kids. The reason I believe that is because He did exactly that with Ishmael.
That who the promise was through. But why only him?
This is through birth alone that the promise was held. No one could do anything to change the promise, you were either born into it or not.
Is this fair?
The promise of God is through birth as well, he will bless the line of David and His chosen people. In the new testament though we see that the birth line is not physical birth any longer but a spiritual rebirth.
Matthew 7:14 ESV
For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
What did Isaac do to deserve this blessing?
Nothing, it was a promise. He cannot brag that he earned anything
Likewise, what did you do to deserve everlasting life through Jesus? Nothing,
Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Back to the text.
Genesis 25:7–9 ESV
These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life, 175 years. Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. Isaac and Ishmael his sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre,
Abraham lived long, and still had more kids.
Notice something unexpected here.
